AIIIIIIIN'T THERE SOMEBODY WHO CAN STOP THIS FIGHTING MACHINE?!

Yes, despite Capcom management's best sabotage efforts, Street Figher V has improbably survived all the way to its fifth season, and evolved from a sad little mini-game into something that's not only less ugly than SFIV and less boring than SFIII, but occasionally almost as much fun as SSFIIX and Zero 2-3 on a good day!

Capcom's going to need to haul some ass if they're serious about releasing five characters in five months, but apparently pro wrestler Kenny Omega aka Beefcake City Mayor Cody is going to announce it all on August 5?! Will Ono escape Tsujimoto Jr.'s cruel prison and bring us the sensible roster we dream of, with Sodom, Rolento, Haggar, Hakan, and Maki? Or are we doomed to the thrilling return of Dan, Sean, Remy, El Fuerte, and Decapre? See you at the races.

Exciting Resources:

MMCafe Dojo: Come join the quad-continent Cafe dojo via CFN or be destroyed by Shadowloo!

Patch Notes: Season 5 now printing

Costume Contest Voting August 17: How did they only just figure out to continue the 1990s Rockman fan design contest tradition four years in and after 10000 fan mods?

Are they really going to announce all five newcomers on the same day? I mean, yeah, they did that in Season 3, but it seems to be wiser to announce them one by one, to keep the hype going.

Anyway, apparently there is a set of SFV tarot cards which included G before he was officially announced, and it also brings Rose, Oro, C.Viper, Elena and Rolento. Those would be quite good choices, although personally I would like to see Haggar finally added in a SF game (and Dan could be nice if Capcom toned his goofiness down a little bit and made him a viable fighter - there are some old SF games where he is actually not bad).

Maybe I'm this person right in front of you... nah probably not though.

I don't think the world is ready for Oro's nuts in 3D.

Meanwhile, if Elena is in, maybe the global political climate will actually pressure Capcom to make a competent redesign for an orange-skinned, blue-eyed, white-haired "Kenyan" who does a Brazilian martial art. Will the superb team that redesigned Sakura and Cody win out, or will it be the Banana Ken/Lion King Gouki/Franken Nash faction?!

I do like to think that after Alex (who?) became playable after appearing in the City in Chaos stage, Sodom and Rolento are now also required to become playable after appearing in the Ring of Justice stage. Then again, he was in there, too: maybe it will be Damnd???

There have been rumors of Rose, Makoto, Oro, Fei Long and Maki but I believe that about as far as I can spit.

But in more concrete news, SF5 is getting a timed demo where all 40 characters are going to be playable. If you've been too cheap to buy anybody outside the base roster now is your chance to see what the rest of the world already knows.

"LAGFEST: Madman Is Missing edition" , posted Mon 3 Aug 11:47post reply

It's season 5, time for:

MMCAFE LAGFEST: Madman Is Missing edition!

Backstory: while typically the shadowy figure Professor H. Moriarty had been the organizing point for global fighting tournaments, the mysterious host has vanished, and certainly not because he hasn't finished FFVIIr yet which is taking up all his hard drive space. In the finest genre traditions, fighters from around the world are gathering to track down his whereabouts, primarily by beating each other up.

How do this weekend or maybe next look for everyone? If it's just the Americas and Asia, I think the evening/morning timing works, but if we've got European fighters, we can flip it so they can join too. What's good for everyone? Here's some ideas:

August 7, 9:00pm+ EST / August 7, 8:00pm+ CST / August 7, 6:00pm+ PST / August 8, 10:00am+ Japan Time
August 8, 9:00pm+ EST / August 8, 8:00pm+ CST / August 8, 6:00pm+ PST / August 9, 10:00am+ Japan Time

Maybe the first new character will even by out then so we can all go to Gill's weird new stage and curse at...Oro?!

If not, it’s going to be Rugal mopping the floor with me for a hilarious one point five straight hours. I might show up, but I can't promise anything. Currently I have more than one job and a number of dental visits to make up for, all stemming from the fun situation that's been ongoing where necessary services are shut down FOR SOME REASON.

My last SFV quest ended with me unlocking every single pic in the arcade gallery, which made me realize how much I hate Shin Gouki, especially when he is involved in the concept of climbing a time-consuming ladder of opponents just to get ONE chance to beat a stupid OP mind-reading AI with a character I haven't optimized, for a piece of weird fanart. But then after several days struggling with this, the game just handed them to me and said I didn't need to do it. If it was going to do that all along then how about doing it sooner?!

I'm looking forward to new characters, but I've given up on hoping for new stage transitions. I once dreamt that Kanzuki beach had one added where Gouki in his scuba gear was knocked onto a stray inner tube that floated gently out to sea where he could be lost and forgotten.

Aghh it's Dan! We'd gotten so close, surviving four straight years without him. At least it's not...Sean!? Bonus that we were spared Elena and Fei Long, but I'm still trying to figure out who thinks Dan is "funny" or "cool" after the SNK joke was already dead and unfunny literally 25 years ago. At least we still have four+ glorious months till he shows up.

I'm importing Iggy's post from the other thread:
quote:
As for Akira, she's the best choice not named Kyôko! She even balances Dan being there!
The timeframe, though... all these leakers are basically dead, no one else was planned after Seth for sure. Ono getting the boot and Covid sure messed things up.
what if it's... King Kobra's return? As a tie-in with SF6?
With second-stringers from Zero like Birdie and Karin somehow taking center stage, we can only hope that Justice Gakuen will one day take over the SFVI roster and purge all the crappy SFIII story elements (and ideally, characters) forever. King Kobra would be the hottest addition since Tiger Jackson to Tekken 3.
quote:

I assume you mean Akira? And the reason you're thinking of our erstwhile master Skullomania is that Akira was initially in a skull-helmeted biker until she takes it off to reveal she's searching for her missing brother Daigo. It was Samus Aran but with less underwear, but that was Hinata's job anyway.

ANYWAY you can all join the lagfest---I'm proof you don't need to be particularly good to be there! Just let us know. Rugal: I'll host and send the invites.

This is the thread we are going to use? Bah, fine.

Anyway, a PlayStation Blog post has more about the characters. An extended video shows that Dan can, in fact, cancel moves with his taunts. Now that he has Break moves Dan has moved on from AoF and is firmly in the Garou series. Hopefully his critical art is a parody of super deadly ninja bees.

More importantly, the blog notes that Oro will no longer have one arm behind his back but will now challenge himself by holding onto a turtle! Will the turtle have DLC costumes? Can I buy the DLC turtle costumes right now?

This is how you make money Capcom! Hire this man!
And also make cute costumes for the turtle. I'll buy all of them
Except the one that will turn the turtle into a cat. Don't even think about it Capcom.

Watching the video, I think that might be Dan's best rendition since SvC Chaos.
Which is... definitely something! Maybe not exactly something positive, but Dan players can't be choosers.

With how some previous characters have had their original look reinvented (if only to sell their previous look as "nostalgia costume", I'm surprised none of those is very different from their original look. I suppose the decision to make them REALLY was last minute, and there was no time to waste in re-designing the wheel?

Rose had a new look in Menat's arcade mode ending

Link Here

We see that the Dan gameplay footage shows him in his SFIV costume.

Who did that promo art? It doesn't look like the style Bengus has been using recently.

I have to say that Dan's animations are looking pretty good so far (his face looks like a WIP, so I can see why they recorded footage off screen). Although he is a joke character he has very grounded kicks, his throws are very technical, even his neutral stance looks like your typical MMA stand up fighter.

For Akira, from what I recall from Rival Schools she kind of fills the Yun/Yang gameplay niche, right? It would be cool if she had an assist V-Skill with Daigo like Mika has with Nadeshiko.

A whole year is gonna be a long wait. I think I will grind survival mode during the free trial on my tertiary PSN account so I can buy the characters with FM as they come out.

I'm extremely glad we have a rival schools character, and that the character is not a fireball/DP character!

Akira is definitely one of the coolest characters from the RS series. I don't know how common the name "Daigo" is in Japan, but given that the most well-known SF player is also a Daigo, it would've been amusing if her brother was included for that reason alone. I am also glad to see that the promotional art image of her manages to convey her so well!

Oro with a turtle is a great idea, I guess somebody at Capcom can still come up with solid takes on existing characters that allow for new avenues of amusement. Old man with turtle Okina in Last Blade still gives me nightmares, though!

Even as one of the world's biggest Justice Gakuen fans, I'll freely admit that everyone in the game is basically Ryu with quarter-circle moves, but I suppose Akira can be Yun/Yang since she doesn't have a projectile? Anyway, I just noticed in the Famitsu article but not the English Playstation blog a reference to "recreating a certain something you'll be familiar with that's unique to Justice Gakuen matches," meaning the tag-team move, so god Skullomania willing, we'll have Daigo, "the man among men," in there!
quote:

Speaking of joke characters, what if...what if Dan accidentally ends up being better than Ryu, Kage, AND Claw?!
quote:

Daigo is a moderately common name, but Akira's brother uses badass kanji that mean "the epitome," right in line with a banchou character who says lines with a straight face like "I'll show you the path a man must tread!" Umehara Daigo's kanji are tragically boring. He should probably change how he writes his name if he wants to be a true Street Fighter.

That reminds me, I always thought Dan was supposed to be the ultimate loser, but I was reading some trivia about him last month and learned that while he is goofy and looks ridiculous, he's actually considered a competent fighter in the SF world (or at least he used to be, before his joke factor was turned up to eleven), and the only reason why he's not at Ryu's and Ken's levels is because of his lack of discipline.

After Sakura got some nice character progression in SFV, it would be nice if the same happened with Dan. Sure, he should still be goofy and all, but maybe he could realize in his story that he should take his fights more seriously - and in turn, some fighters could acknowledge he isn't the worst opponent they ever had.

I would accept it if Dan ends up fighting Kage and beating him.
If Dan becomes competent and Kage takes his role as the ultimate loser, then their inclusion in SF5 becomes warranted.

Not only with this redeem 25 years of Dan, it would also fit nicely with the surprisingly cute and good-hearted writing for the individual story modes if Dan beats Kage and we learn that "hate is the ultimate loser!"

"Madman Times: Laggy Edition - get yer copy" , posted Sat 8 Aug 14:25:post reply

Thanks for the fun matches, everyone! While it took the staff photographer a while to get the screenshots working on his new computer, the Madman Times has still managed to get to print. READ ALL ABOUT IT:

As usual, Rugal descended from the heavens to show us how it's done, with many of the usual types of tragicomic results. One of the most uplifting upsides to these pummelings is that they can finally give the poor, unloved (by Capcom) Fang his long-deserved place in the sun.

Certainly, contestants can look pretty shocked when they manage to survive. A heroic Warzard denizen attempted to take down MMC's toughest boss when he took the form of a very large man intruding in the MMC Dojo but the loss of the costume's lion head proved fatal. In the biggest upset of the night, it was hapless Ed, of all people, who managed to pull off a major victory.

In other news, while Sexy Seth is probably limited somewhat by his questionable source material, he/she/? does look better in a hat.

In a shocking twist, a mysterious BUTTERMONSTER named Juan appeared later, but the biggest surprise of the night was that AbiGAAAAIL and Chun Li got married! Then again, these unions don't always go as smoothly as originally planned.

And now, the weather: while there is always the possibility of relaxing at the pool or even the sento if Honda doesn't yell at you, in these hot summer days, monsters and men alike all mostly just want to head to the beach.

Sorry, I tried. Technically I almost made it because I was in around 9PM, but then I realized it was 9PM EDT which was 3 hours earlier, something that I had not properly absorbed. It didn't really matter since around that time I was stuck with work anyway, but had I known I might have taken a short break to check in.

Might as well comment on the new characters while I'm here.

Dan, wow. I actually did not expect that. I wonder if his story in SFV will be that he closed up his dojo to run a costume shop with his sister. What's really interesting to me about this inclusion is that traditionally, Dan has been purposefully undertuned with stubby normals and weak projectiles. But SFV is a game where everyone has stubby normals and weak projectiles, so maybe this could be his big chance?

Rose and Oro are a bit more expected, but it'll be nice seeing Oro again after all this time. When I think about it, he should be real easy to translate into the SFV system since two of his original Super Arts were like V-Triggers anyway. As for Rose, I'm not a fan of the purple raincoat in Menat's ending but I don't know if she's going to be using that design or not, given the artwork shown was just her regular outfit.

And Akira! When I asked for Akira on Twitter a couple of months ago I did not think I would get her this soon, but why look a gift horse in the mouth? They also mentioned that her stage would have a special gimmick, interesting...

Thanks Ono-san for not only bringing back Street Fighter over a decade ago, but also reviving the fighting game genre.

I know Ono has gotten some hate over the last couple of years, mostly concerning SFV, but you still gotta give him his props for the hard work he did for Capcom. Who knows, without his involvement, whether the SF series would have seen the light of day a lot later than when it did.

I presume the gimmick being that there will be cameos from most of the Rival Schools crew. I am already wondering if the stage will be the Seijyun (sp?) Girls Courtyard stage from the second Rival Schools? Only time will tell.

The wait for these characters is going to be torture. But I know they will be worth it. I'm so happy Rose is back again! She deserves her spot in this game. I'm also excited at the possibilities of Arika! Oro and Dan I'm meh about. Especially Dan, since I feel another more worthy character should have gotten his slot. Makes me wonder who the 5th character will be. Everyone is presuming it will be a male character, giving the number of costumes the character is getting.

Now that I think about it, I'm not certain what a Rival Schools themed stage would look like in SF5. The stages in the Gakuen series were colorful enough and fit the game but they were, by and large, generic anime school settings. What is going to make the stage unique?

Because the fight happens in a school, all the sleazy costumes are banned and the characters can only select appropriate outfits for children.
Also if you try to select Urien there the police swats your place and arrest you for having an exhibitionist trying to traumatise children.

Zangief would never allow cheating! CYCLONE!

Some of these are pretty good! Again, they should have done this YEARS ago, as the company who pioneered the create-a-boss contest for Rockman. It's cute to see nice comments from supporters interacting with the designer. It's almost as if the non-MMC internet used to be capable of human interactions...as if there had been at one point been "fanpages" and "webrings," or something? Must've been a dream...

Speaking of which Sakura's taiko drummer outfit is pretty cute, even if the Rockman addition seems unneccessary. Matsuri Mika is a close rival for the festival scene since you get Nadeshiko too.

Kabuki Honda would be hot hot hot

Nice try, pirate (??) Juri, but you're still not getting me to use you. Apparently it's Vega's hat and Seth's cloak? But I'll ignore that.

Similarly, even naked Claw cannot help people remember he is (technically) in the game.

While a number of these outfits are interesting I don't know how well they would work in-game. The art on Alex's outfit looks slick but during a match Alex's lumpy form and misplaced knees will make it awful. Similarly, I like that someone tried to do something fun with Guile but all of Guile's outfits should be as boring and unimaginative as he his. It's the law.

Sash Juri and purple coat Juri are an interesting contrast. In the end I like sash Juri better because I would like to see how her moves such as pinwheel would look with the accent of that fabric. It will probably be a clippy mess but it will undoubtedly still look better than that long, obscuring coat. That, and purple coat Juri's shoes don't go with the rest of the outfit so that junk should go straight in the trash.

While the one downside to Champion Edition is that it made the entire SFV Fashion Show of costumes available to the unwashed masses rather than to just the MMC Lagfest Premier Collection of Fight-Money-wasters like us, I'm confident that we will retake our place at the vanguard of SFV fashion (judgment) for season 5!

I bet there will be a rooftop stage and you can knock your opponent onto another rooftop or something. Or maybe the RS cameo characters will help out with an assist like the old lady in one of the stages in MK10.

Update: the Kairi costume is now available for a measly 500 fight money. He even comes with an alternative regular Ryu head so you can have Ryu with horrific scarring all over his body. Maybe you can pretend it's Ryu from the end of the Ryu: Final manga? That, or you could pretend that the Kairi head is Ryu after not being able to get a proper haircut for months due to the pandemic.

Also of note is that the skin under Kairi's arm bandages glows. Sadly, the costume doesn't have Kairi's gimmick where when he had full meter he would strike a messianic pose and beat people until they burst into flame. I always thought that was a cute little Easter egg but in order to see it again I would have to play FEXL and, well, the trick wasn't that good.

I got Hokuto for Karin and I am really impressed by it. She fits Karin like a a glove. It just sucks that the requirement to get colors 9 and 10 is to get wins with the character in Casual AND Ranked. For the last 4 years I have been playing Zangief Fighter V with maybe a little bit of Abigail on the side. My rank is too high to even stand a chance with people who have had 4 years of match up history against the likes of Ryu and Karin.

The English release of "How To Make Capcom Fighting Characters: Street Fighter Character Design" finally came out and Amazon just dropped it off. When I ordered it back in April I was only charged $33, price has gone up to $50, but it is an impressive book. I cracked it open to just skim so far, but is just stacked with great stuff.

Double post!

I finally got my copy of the Capcom Design Book. My life is a bit hectic at the moment so I doubt I will be able to sit down and give it a cover to cover reading until later. However, even glancing through the pages I came across a few interesting tidbits:

The programmers think up their own weird logic to explain special moves. For example, someone decided that Ken's fierce DP is on fire because of the friction of his fist getting too close to the ground. His animation dips close to the ground in SF5 to make this idea work.

All this time it seems that Cammy was supposed to be wearing camo leggings so this is her first time appearing with bare legs. Really?

Speaking of redesigns, some changes were considered for Zangief but they wisely realized he is beautiful and perfect as-is. The only guidelines they had were to make certain he was SF2 style chiseled instead of SFA flabby.

Nash was originally going to be rebuilt using Twelve tech but having chunks of his body change shape looked ridiculous. I'll be interested in reading a history of SF5 several years from now when everyone can be more honest about their thoughts on character designs such as Nash and Necalli.

As of now the history of SF5 is still being written. Judging by this interview in Spin magazine the purge of Ono continues with no mention of his work as producer.

While my impression of Tsujimoto Jr. as the guy who overthrew Ono is similar to my impression of crappy Koopa Jr. who overthrew the Koopa Kids, I wonder if some Street Fighter developers like these guys are glad to have the attention shared more now, whether or not The Management is keeping them quiet. I'm reminded of how people started implying that Inafune and Naka alone where what made the old Rockman and Sonic games good, when that really wasn't the case.

Anyway, thanks for the book observations! I've always liked to rationalize what's going on with certain Street Fighter special moves, too, or maybe fighting games in general---in my mind, the health bar can be like a probability gauge of someone getting seriously insured rather than the number of times they get hit, especially where weapons and not just fists are concerned.

For those playing the home game, G now has an unlockable Skullomania costume.

Also, the Polygon articles featuring the oral history of SF are still going strong, with SF3 being the latest topic of discussion. There are some interesting anecdotes to be found in the article, such as often overlooked arcade sales side or the brutally honest Akiman ragging on SF3 as a whole. Still, when I read these articles I find I want more. For example, the Alpha/Zero series changes so dramatically those might as well be three seperate games; what was the thought process that went into the sequels? Perhaps these sort of ruminations will be covered in the ridiculously overproduced Kickstarter book that will collect this series of articles.

I feel like SFA2 felt like a fairly natural progression from SFA1, but SFA3 felt like a "next generation" (but not NG ohoh) fighting game: it's mechanics were wild and new, its presentation and new visual effects were cutting-edge, its music was dance-oriented, etc. SFV draws a lot of inspiration from the SFA series, but it feels as though SFA3 was as far as they wanted to go in taking SF in becoming more Vs-series (Versus, not Vampire!) like.

Thanks for the link! In some ways it's still amazing how things haven't changed from back then-- at the time I recall thinking that despite the trend being 3D, the 2D sprite fighters still looked better . Games like Virtua Fighter and Toshinden simply didn't have the artistic value of pixel art that was based off hand-drawn illustrations. Arc System Works is getting there, but it comes from their utterly insane frame-by-frame efforts.

Hey there bright eyes, here are a few quick thoughts on the new season:

Between Dan's slightly botoxed face and different voice it feels like Mr. Hibiki was fired from SF and replaced by a new actor. Or maybe it's a Bruce Lee / Bruce Li sort of thing. Whatever, at least his relentless taunt attacks are fun.

The V-Shift is nifty but doesn't feel like it remakes the entire game. Between keeping the joystick in neutral and giving up resources, going for a shift is a commitment. My guess is it will be good for getting out of expected pressure but it's probably rarely be successfully used against something like Dictator suddenly sliding in with . While I'm certain there will be situations where it will make for an impressive change in momentum I don't think the entire game is going to be remade around this mechanic. Then again, I like playing E.Honda so what do I know about finesse?

One of the loading screens now features art from the Fortnite crossover. There's no explanation for what it is, instead it's a big, weird picture Shinkiro drew of Ryu smiling through lens flare.

Hilarious! As every member of the MMC LAGFEST dojo knows, weird lens flare/stares are properly done with Sakura, not Ryu.

Thanks for the report on Dan and the new mechanics in general. I have high hopes that Honda will be top tier while Gouki gets shown the door, but in any event, Dan is probably all set up to be better than Evil Dan/Kage AND probably Ryu himself.

We should probably do Dan-fest around March 5/6/7 US-Japan time. Start planning now!

Speaking of which: Champion Edition temporarily ruined one of the main goals of Lagfest, which was to show off the various exotic/stupid costumes the Cafe had collected, now that we're back into a new season and Dan is here, it's time for sharing again! Are people interested in US evenings/Japan mornings on March 19/20, 20/21, 26/27, 27/28?

The delinquent schoolgirl outfit looks great! But... isn't Juri from South Korea? This outfit looks like it would belong to a Japanese girl, not a Korean one.

The Shadaloo outfit, on the other hand, is... my knowledge of English is still quite limited, but I think the correct term in this case is "hot mess".

On the other hand, the more that a foul-mouthed, unpleasantly-acted psychopath like Juri is explicitly identified as being Korean, the more likely SFV is to cause an international incident, so the non-Korean uniform may have been a good choice! Just a Person's totally right that her uniform is more Japan-style, right down to the classic banchou/gang boss line "kenka joutou" ("ready to rumble") written on the side.

I feel like the female dictator thing made more sense in the contest sketch. Why does she have Vega's hat? Only the excellently-titled former MMC poster mbisonhatclub can be sure.

That's a good point!

It also makes me wonder: should Capcom consider bringing a second South Korean character to the SF franchise - but this time with a heroic man (or woman)? Considering all the attention the country has getting recently with its films and music, this could attract more attention (in a positive light) to SF. And, after all, Tekken already has both Hwoarang and Baek, KOF has Kim and his team (plus some newcomers from XIV), SoulCalibur has Mina and Yunseong (and occasionally Hwang)...

Sure, some players may complain that a second Taekwondo fighter could feel repetitive - but then again, with all the shotos, plus Sagat and Adon, Yun and Yang and so on, I don't think that would be much of a problem.

Maybe I'm this person right in front of you... nah probably not though.

But Juri herself is a hot mess so it's appropriate!

Honestly, I also kind of like that goofy look. The asymmetrical design of an eyepatch on one side and a sash on the other is something that would never work in 2D so I appreciate a costume that takes advantage of how SF is currently built. I also suspect the Shadaloo outfit will work well with Juri's moves. When Juri does something as basic as charge a fireball she does an incredibly high kick so she needs an outfit that allows her legs plenty of movement. That long sukeban coat looks like it's going to constantly get in the way of her attacks. I'll be curious to see how these costumes work in-game.

As for a Dan-fest, if there is a time that works for everyone please let me know. My time is somewhat erratic at the moment, but if I know when we're getting together I can schedule around it.

I have decided that this will be the first CPT bundle I will ever purchased. I'll buy it later today before work.

G's costume looks pretty sick. I am glad he got another set of threads. He is one of my characters that I use online. The new stage does look cool as well.

"Lagfest Times: Thrilling and Exotic Sightings" , posted Sun 28 Mar 14:05post reply

The MMC Times was on the ground for the latest triple-time-zone lagfest, and there were reports of a lot of paranormal stuff going on! Sightings of strange mythological youkai duking it out, and down in Racoon City, Juan and Ishmael brought news of TERRIBLE UNDEAD MONSTERS. Further reports of mountain goblins afoot, and...oh, that tenguu was just Dan? Sadly, Vega wiped that Mr. Karate-mocking smile right off his face.

Speaking of legends, the most inconsequential biggest fight of the decade finally happened between Dan and Evil Dan, and after comparing who had the stubbiest normals, we made sure it looked as moronic as possible.

Dan's cosplay might have actually lost out to Juri's, who proved once again that you can by a Z-tier character but still have all the best outfits. Cammy's Marvel vs. Capcom outfit was also so overwhelmingly, heartwarmingly nostalgic that she induced fainting.

Proving the MMC Fashion Show adage that the clothes make the man, the most thrilling moment of the night was when Juan's unstoppable geezer Guile fell to Flavor Flav Ryu and his OG beats, leaving everyone to wonder as he wandered off into the sunset whether Ryu was really a winner all along because he believed in himself, patches or no.

On the subject of unlikely victories, MMC's favorite last boss Rugal ran the show as usual, but Sakura did manage an upset on the motion sickness-tastic airplane edge before throwing up.

However, AbiGAAAAAAIL and his deadly finger flick are a reminder that peppy ingénues shouldn't let a stray victory go to their heads or get too out of control. But it's probably too late with vaccines starting to appear, with young people starting to flock to the beach, girls again going wild, and the Justice Gakuen team watching from the shore and counting down the days till Akira is available for download.

"Lagfest Times: Rugal Invitational" , posted Sat 3 Apr 14:14post reply

What's this, two Lagfests in a week? There's a MMC Times Weekend Edition to bring you the latest in 3+ timezone play!

Chairman Honda was there to bless the ring for the Rugal Invitation, but the World Warriors were clearly grandfathered in and lying down on the job. The terror of Rugal's Vega made everyone sit up and take notice, so Zangief dressed to match the gravity of the occasion. Slightly less frightening was Juri cosplaying as pirate Vega, since it turns out the solution is to moonwalk.

It was neat seeing Kairi from SF EX, and the biggest thrill was the prospect of losing to Dan, though his hilarious recovery times meant that even the weakest participants could outlast him. I like how his voice is even more annoying than before.

The most amazing sight of the night was watching Ishmael's Alex (!!!) defeat the mighty Juan, an event so unexpected that the cameramen could only catch some awkward footage.

Meanwhile, with summer coming, some people are lying around working on their tans and breaking out their shades, though as in real life it's always just a matter of time before kappas and muscleheads take over the place.

Also: sometimes it's important to launch cops out of your house when they conduct warrantless searches.

Thanks a lot for the matches!

I think you mean "Akira," unless SF EX developer Arika is making even more costumes for SFV! Anyway, thanks for the reminder---I'd forgotten this was happening today. I'll remind everyone that MMCafe is the premier source of SFV prophecies (not leaks):
quote:
It would be cool if she had an assist V-Skill with Daigo like Mika has with Nadeshiko.

the only logicial assumption is that they're all Justice Gakuen characters. BEHOLD, you know my vision to be correct
The most important part of the Akira trailer is near the end! It's not clear whether the collective Cafe will be more excited by Akira's brother or Oro's turtle appearing as partners, but all I care about is that Akira's energy flashes the kanji for "friendship," in the proper nod to the "two-platoon (tag-team) of love and frienship" moves from Justice Gakuen.

I was just thinking how I was getting tired of SFV's old stages and familiar faces, and a mini-revival of my favorite Capcom fighting game (note I did not say "the best Capcom fighting game") is just the thing...and I barely even ever used Akira! It was all Daigo and Hinata, all the time.

Please watch this space on Akira's actual release date, during which I will recite the Justice Gakuen school song in its entirety, which I still remember better than my real-life school song. Iggy can sing Taiyou's or Gorin's, I guess.

Akira looks great, Oro's turtle is adorable, and Rose can do everything. Not only does she have her genei jin combos and can toss air fireballs but she now teleports better than Nash. If she ever figured out how to do ground pounds she could boot Necalli from the game as well.

However, the most important thing to come out of this update is the news that Juri is receiving an Elle Driver nurse costume. 2021 has unofficially become the year of Juri so I'm excited to see what Capcom will do next to continue the celebration.

It concerns me that Rose still seems to have only one facial expression and no eye movement, but I suppose that's the price you pay for a neck shortening. I am pleased to see they returned Lisa Lisa's iconic throw that she was sorely missing in SF4 just in time for Stone Ocean's anime announcement.

Everyone is so distracted by Juri's nurse outfit that nobody noticed Seth cosplaying as Young Geese Howard. Or maybe it's AoF1 King. Either way, at least Ohtsuka gets to voice a much better character now that Super Daigo is swooping in to help his sister before taking to the skies again.

Akira looking as good as she does here makes me think they should attempt CFAS again but give it the playability of SF. Basically make it Capcom's version of KOF, but without the three-man team rule so they don't have to tether the roster.

Very quick thoughts on Rose:

After trying out Rose I do wonder if she's actually going to be good. Is she going to be more like Gill where her move set seems like a good idea on paper but it can't come together properly? I'm particularly terrible at figuring out characters so expect her to have touch of death combos by the end of the week.

Also, everyone always talks about Rose's scarf, but what about her dress? She spends a majority of her day sliding around on her butt in an outfit that does not seem practical for that sort of behavior. However, her dress is never scuffed or bunched up. That's some impressive fabric.

I've managed a very simple combo with Rose. Jumping roundhouse+ducking strong punch+Soul Scarf (and if you have your super meter built up, you can use her critical art Fatal Aura Spark right after that).

I am just so thrilled to have her back again. She truly looks better than ever. SO MUCH better than Street Fighter IV. The remake of her SFA2 stage is gorgeous.

The players who can get creative with her combos are probably going to quite well. I hope the rest of the cast likes the taste of high heels, because Rose and Poison are going to be delivering pumps to the face for the foreseeable future.

quote:

I've managed a very simple combo with Rose. Jumping roundhouse+ducking strong punch+Soul Scarf (and if you have your super meter built up, you can use her critical art Fatal Aura Spark right after that).

Nice! Now if I can figure out a way to safely generate Soul Satellites I'll be able to do absurd damage from a basic jump-in.

Outstanding! My body is ready for Lagfest: High Heels Edition any evening people want to set something up.

The other good thing that Rose apparently brings is a strong hint in her story that Capcom might be willing to stop trying to wedge future games into the crappy, boring corner they'd painted themselves into with SFIII's crappy, boring story always having to be the final chapter. Now we can start dreaming of the wonderful world where SFVI is a continuous SF Zero-style goofball party with a bunch of Justice Gakuen cameos.

Akira can't be released soon enough!

Rose looks decent enough with Jojo references intact, but I just can't look at her face and NOT see it. I just can't. It bothers me so much.

Her eyes. They don't move. Like, at all.

There are maybe two or three animations where you see them moving, but for the most part she doesn't focus her eyes on anything. She's like a lifeless, permanently cross-eyed doll and that would only be okay if it was actually supposed to be part of her character, but I don't recall that being a thing.

This makes me think that she was wearing sunglasses or something early on in her development and had them taken off later (which would make sense), but when they showed her in early development she had no such thing, so I just can't understand it. Why go this far and just not finish the job?

If the last character is Sawada, you'll have a crossover with all the Jean-claude Van Damme movies and get Dolph Lungreen as a cameo.

My guess is Decapre, and Capcom has intentionally kept her hidden as a joke.

The bigger Season 5 issue though... After building up G as a future threat and/or boss, has that story already been brought to an end? Rose's story sees her fighting G, realizing the destruction he heralds has become unavoidable, and thus she attempts to send a warning to her younger self so she can instead prevent it in the past. If she actually succeeded and altered the timeline to prevent said destruction, then she's pretty much stopped G as well, before he ever got to do much of anything.

Hahah, they should keep her as very well-hidden joke like Dan in SF Zero 1: out of my way off the character select screen but available to those who really want them.

As for the Case of Rose and the Missing G: Ono and friends were pretty upfront in past interviews about how SF's story has always been quote "pretty weak," and the whole story of SFV seems to have been written on the fly. Necalli was going to be central and was on all the early ads...until they realized how lame he was, and wrote him out of his own game by the second season story mode, where he was literally an irrelevant nuisance to Ryu while trying to fight Shadowloo. G appears...but then, other (much more boring) savior figures like Gill are written in because SFIII's story had to be at the end. Like I was saying above, maybe Rose's new story is them realizing that SFIII is a stupid dead-end of a story and no one cares about Gill or the Illuminati, so SFV's final and greatest gift to humanity can be making it so that SFIII never existed. (Uhhhhhhhhhh, the story I mean. Yeah, that's it...)

The weird thing is, rather than retcon SFIII out of the timeline, wouldn't it be just easier to have the next games taking place after it? Before SFIV, there was the idea that there was a huge time gap between SFII and SFIII, and therefore the most classic World Warriors couldn't be in the next games because they would be too old - but SFIV and SFV dropped this impression, especially IV, which had both the SFII World Warriors looking just like they always did AND some SFIII characters that are young in SFIII (Ibuki, Makoto, Elena and the Lee twins) and thus wouldn't be able to appear in a game if it took place too many years before SFIII. In other words, SFVI could perfectly bring back any character without having to worry if they would be too old. And even if it did, Tekken already showed that you can just bring everyone back with no worries (even if it pretends the older women in the franchise like Jun, Michelle and the first Kunimitsu don't exist).

As for this time reset idea, honestly, I don't like it. Sure, it can lead to interesting stories and concepts if used right; the problem is that it is too easy to mess it up and result in something awful. This idea may have worked for Mortal Kombat, but that's only because Armageddon ended up in such a bad way that anything would be better. SF, despite being far from having the most fleshed out story in a fighting game, hasn't reached that point yet to need a reboot.

I rarely give a thought to her V-Triggers, just because of the risk involved.

Street Fighter, IMO, screwed up their storyline with SFA3. That game was all over the place in regards to story. If they really had to "reset it back to zero", then they need to hire writers that can actually salvage the story.

Why do people think that Rose is going to be able to do something as complex as resetting time itself when she can barely make it through her own storylines without getting beaten up? If this plotline is used all that will happen is that Rose will screw up, generate more psycho power, and bring back Bison in time for the first season pass of SF6.

But odds are it will be another abandoned plotline, joining the ranks of Neo Shadaloo and whoever beat up Takuma in KoF 03.

Chun-Li, for all her cockiness, gets her ass handed her to by Juri and Bison throughout the SF series, and also has a strong match in Viper in the SFIV storyline. So, perhaps, Rose can redeem herself in the past. Anything is possible in the SF storyline, it seems.

I am hoping SF can advance the storyline beyond 3rd Strike. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Cammy need to be in the games to sell, so I think SF6 can take place a couple of years after 3rd Strike without aging the characters too much. But the storyline does need to move on from Satsui no Hado and Shadoloo already. It's old and tiresome.

On one hand, if Rose fails to alter the past then destruction is allegedly unavoidable.

On the other hand, if Rose succeeds in altering the past, then Capcom gets to retcon any and all of SF5 that it wants to retcon. Not just Bison, they can bring Shadaloo itself back with Sagat, Vega, Balrog, and the various Dolls all back in their original roles. They want Sakura back as a Ryu-obsessed schoolgirl instead of a reality-facing woman, then she's back to that. They want a different Nash revival, then he's back differently. They want to erase Necalli, then he's gone. They want to erase G, then he's gone.

Besides, a time manipulation reboot would just see Capcom following in the relatively recent footsteps of SNK and Netherealm.

What's that? Hahahah, no, of course Juri didn't get any improvements. What do you think this is, a game where they thought about Juri/Alex/Claw/Fang for more than five minutes?

The Random Enhanced Gadoken is a unique way to get rid of Dan's infinite combo. They probably could have done more discrete like limit the number of V-Skill cancels in a combo, but chose to add a gimmick.

Apparently Zangief got a major nerf with a lack of throw invincibility to his EX SPD on frame 1. I tried playing over the weekend and my skills have really deteriorated and I got frustrated really easily. I think 5 years is enough with this game for me.

Ryu and Juri are perfect and beautiful as they are. The only thing Juri is lacking is a new costume; it's been a few weeks since she had some new threads.

Judging from the hits Zangief and Abigail took I do wonder if the balance team is regularly getting destroyed online by Itabashi Zangief or some other high-level big boy player. Maybe now it's Alex's time to shine? Nah, it's more likely Honda's reign of butt-slam terror will now really go into overdrive.

Heh, that's amusing. It's not 30 dollars amusing, but I own more useless pieces of SF memorabilia.

It looks like the author has made something of a career of the videogame cookbook niche, including two books inspired by the post-apocalyptic landscapes of Destiny and Fallout. A cookbook that also brings Sakura gossiping about her fellow street fighters? That's brilliant! I mean, who could guess that Ken, of all people, actually enjoys cooking?

I look forward to the stories about the characters that are... not the nicest people.

As someone who avoids fighting game "stories" like the plague, as I feel it actually diminishes one's intellect, this is an obvious "canonical" fail, or just rubber stamping a license agreement Fortnite style.

El Fuerte is the damned chef of the series. The cook book should be him sharing the fun recipes he earned defeating other world warriors in battle. I doubt waifu fans will buy it for the Sakura angle. :b

But El Fuerte is a TERRIBLE chef, if I remember correctly... a cookbook "written" by him wouldn't lend the recipes much credibility, I guess.

Maybe Sakura decided to become a chef after she realized she needed a job to be able to pay for her street-fighting trips around the world?

Between street fighting, trying to write a cookbook, and getting a job at an arcade it's obvious Sakura is the queen of poor career decisions. I'm looking forward to SF6 where she is working as a clerk at a video rental shop.

I personally expect El Fuerte to show up as DLC at some point in SF6's lifespan since there isn't anyone else in the cast who plays like him. But, still, you're right that the guy dropped out of sight harder than Remy. Even Abel gets the occasional shout-out and he's as dull as a slice of white bread.

I feel like the CvS2 version of Maki plays very similar to him.
She's also less hated because she was absolute bottom tier and didn't have the occasion to annoy anyone.
However, her voice was more annoying than Fuerte's, so I'll give them a tie.

Maybe Karin is silently helping Sakura behind the scenes. Sakura might not take a substantial hand-out, but if Sakura and Karin just happen to talk about the idea of writing a cook book and a publisher just happens to offer Sakura a better than normal deal that will pay for her personal globe-trotting as research...

Yet.

Hopefully it gets implemented as I do plan on purchasing to PC release, and also due to the relative success of the game's sales.

What's the split of PC vs. Console players for Strive here?

I don't expect ASW to ever implement PS/PC crossplay.

Most of the hope seems to come from a comment from Riku Ozawa, who said it was not impossible. But that "hope" ignores that the comment was instead pretty much ruling out the possibility.

It is worth noting also that various other developers have mentioned in the past the various road blocks Sony has placed against their attempts to enable crossplatform play. Epic revealed just how sweet a deal Sony turned down when Epic was originally trying to get Sony to agree to crossplatform Fortnite play. Epic has also pointed out that Sony is the only company that requires publishers agree to potentially pay Sony monthly compensation for crossplatform play.

I'm leaning more on the sales success of the title, being the most successful release of the franchise ever. So there may be a financial incentive to bridge the gap between player bases.

Although I do agree, it is foolish and greedy of Sony to demand software developers pay the vig.

In the current gaming market, I find it very unfortunate that we went from the PS3/360 era of pretty well curated ecosystems for games with single gamer tags / user ID's - to the current state where you have a platform ID, have to pay to play online with the respective platform (barring PC), and then are further sequestered by the respective software title's unique player ID.

e.g. I'm still a bit salty that my Capcom Fighter Network ID is not portable between the PS4 and PC. Although considering that mafia extortion exposé on Sony - I reckon that's a result of platforms becoming more fractured, and Sony no longer being interested in being a neutral intermediary when instead they can demand a cash payment from developers (crossplay) and players (online play).

It's a damned shame. I wonder what the split will be for Strive sales, they were touting 300k shipped earlier this week, but physical Japanese sales were just 11K and I honestly don't expect Western markets to pick up slack in the physical sales area. So the question is - what's the split between physical and digital sales between region, and then what's the split between Playstation systems and PC?

Crazy as it seems - I don't believe fighting games have the cultural cachet to be platform exclusives. A large part of the success of Street Fighter 4 was due in part to a poverty player being able to run some version of the game on a potato.

Ignoring reason, I could simply fall back on my superstition that odd numbered main line Street Fighter games are cursed entries. :b

Well, the 360 was the beginning of paying to playing online with a particular platform with Xbox Live Gold: unless you had paid for the subscription, many games on X360 would not allow you to play online. Once that genie was out of the bottle, neither Sony nor Nintendo could ignore vast revenue that provided.

I personally prefer not having all of my user information the same across all titles with one common user ID people can stalk me with, and given that that was the norm for many online PC games particularly ones which have their own servers, I don't see this as too big of a minus. The Google Play store on the other hand does kind of provide that, but I find Google's services to be increasingly uncomfortably invasive.

Sadly, 11K sounds about right for GG. This has always been a series where the lofty pre-release expectations never seem to match up to the actual sales.I

Isn't that what family sharing plans are for? Besides, you just make a new account for smurfing; it just will be a new account that isn't linked to anything else.

As for Strive's sales, Steam records a peak concurrent user count of 31,156 players around launch day. The daily peak has since dipped to around 16-19k players.

In comparison:
Dragon Ball FighterZ: all-time peak 44,303 three years ago; current daily peaks 1.4-2.6k
Mortal Kombat 11: all-time peak 35,147 two years ago; current daily peaks 2.3-2.7k
Tekken 7: all-time peak 18,966 four years ago; current daily peak 5-11k
Street Fighter V: all-time peak 14,783 five years ago; current daily peak 3k
GranBlue Fantasy Versus: all-time peak 5,287 fifteen months ago; current daily peaks 129-142

A few years ago Valve went out of its way to block the methods that other sites could use to get pretty accurate Steam sales estimates. Now such sites have to use fairly inaccurate methods. Playtracker estimates around 100k-210k people on Steam own Strive, while Steam Spy estimates it to be 200k-500k people.

Unthinkable! MMC_Lagfest has been a weird mix of PC and PS players since the beginning to ensure we get the hottest lag straight off the grill. Besides, without crushing lag, how else will I keep explaining my inexcusable losses?

Good grief, with that great a variance they might as well wait until they can figure out a better tracking method.

I've always played GG in the "wrong" way. But now that Strive has streamlined everything you have to play the game correctly to get anywhere. I'm holding off on Strive until they add a few patches to the game engine and I can go back to stupidly flying around the screen hitting buttons.

I wouldn't be surprised if the sites that report physical sales data aren't much better. Sites that have been treated as trusted and accurate sources for decades.

The big problem is that publishers don't want such data to be freely available to the public, for a number of reasons. And without enough accurate sales data, how can an outsider improve or even just prove their methods of estimating sales data?

As for discount Steve Fox Luke, if this is what the future of SF holds then I'll gladly take a time machine instead. At least he looks like a fighter instead of the forgettable twig known as Shun'ei.

Tournament mode: uhhhhh was this even in there before? I feel like they talked about this years ago but it never happened. Maybe we can finally have the MMC Lagfest dojo challenge other dojos?!

Turtling: it's not just for Guile anymore! I'm going to make sure Iggy reinstalls SFV just to play as Oro, with or without animated nuts per SFIII's always-dubious (to me) legacy.

Snark aside, and as ugly as Luke is, I am relieved to have a new character here instead of some out-of-place cameo or (worse) a guest from Tekken, God of War or Fortnite. And Oro and Akira look nice.
Hearing the opening start when she's low on life in her stage made me shed manly tears of burning friendship. And her maid outfit from the event in Seishunnikki is just great. I love that they're really taking a Smash Bros approach to this cameo and try to incorporate as much as the original game in her.

To be honest, I really like Luke. I was kinda hoping the final character (and possible SFVI protagonist) would be a Taekwondo fighter (a more orthodox Taekwondo fighter, unlike Juri), but a MMA fighter is cool, too. I'm not sure if I like the idea of him having projectiles (after all, MMA is all about being close to the opponent to fight), but he's a cool design. This time, Capcom made the right choice.

Akira and Oro look great, too. Hopefully SFVI will have more Rival Schools characters; the sports team would probably feel out of place in Street Fighter, but I think characters like Tiffany, Boman and Edge would feel at home (Roy and Batsu's team, too, but these four would maybe feel redundant - then again, in a game with so many shotos, why not add one or two more if they're interesting characters?).

Maybe I'm this person right in front of you... nah probably not though.

I'm certain Alex and Abel are already saving a space on the bench for Luke. Ed's currently shuffling off the field to that bench, having already been replaced as the "blue-eyed boy who represents the future of SF" in his debut game.

But enough of the future footnote that is Luke, let's get to the pretty people. Oro and Akira benefitted from coming later in the game's life since they seem to share the design philosophy of being able to do everything. First, all their moves seem to be able to connect; even Oro's command throw can be a combo ender. Even their jumping looks fun. Oro's double jump looks hilariously annoying. Also, while I wasn't certain what would make anyone step away from Karin to try out the newest rekka character, Akira's ability to hose people down with a fireball on her jump in might do the trick, never mind her ability to launch and juggle helpless opponents. These two look to be a hoot.

Unpopular opinion, but I feel if Luke is supposed to be "the future of SF", then it's going to be a very bleak future indeed. This opinion echoes a lot of what's been said online.

What irritates me is the fact they devs could have had a character who represented a country that has yet to appear in the franchise, but they chose yet another stereotyped American design, and another blonde-haired character. It seems the devs favor Japan and American nationalities. What happened to the "World Warrior" aspect the franchise was known for? It's such a shame. Total unoriginality.

But, at least Akira looks spectacular! So, that's what matters for me.

Actually, I think Luke may be a little luckier than Alex and Abel; while they were heavier characters with focus on grappling, Luke seems to be a more standard SF character, easier to get used to, with projectiles, uppercuts and all. Many casual players may end up liking him, which was harder to do with Alex and Abel.

Of course, it may be a different story regarding pro-tournament players. Then again, I'm not even sure which characters are liked by them nowadays, and if I remember correctly, even Ryu and Chun-Li were largely ignored by them at some moment in SFV's lifespan.

Who? Despite being the topic of the sentence I literally forgot who Alex and Abel were for a second, and I look forward to similar for Luke, even if we do eventually end up with Blond Fighter VI to follow Blond Fighter V. But like Freeter said, it will have been worth it because SFV offered a proof of concept for another Justice Gakuen game. I wonder about that as well. Between his dog tags, the way he's tatted up to look like a douchey Captain America and his talking about needing to surpass someone makes me wonder if he's connected to Guile or Nash. Luke may be like Rufus in that he's not 100% from Muscle Bomber but you can see the connection if you squint.

Now that I think about it, what is it about Luke's moves that makes him compatible with both SF5 and SF6?

I don't know if it helps towards answering your question. But I thought it was strange how some of his moves hit like punches yet they are telegraphed from some distance. They are acting like projectiles/hadoukens but they don't seem to be work like standard SF projectiles. I'm still not sure how they work.

I wonder if Luke is going to play more like Laura or Makoto where they have moves designed to get in on the opponent rather than the fireball/uppercut game of Ryu and Ken. The fireball spam v-trigger in the trailer looked neat but I suspect it will be like Sagat's big ball where it's only used for chip or combo enders.

I'll be annoyed if Makoto has to sit out SF6 as well due to this rooster-headed doofus but we shall see.

This.

Street Fighter has had a rough patch since Street Fighter 3, and I say this as someone who loved Street Fighter 3 back in the arcade. Street Fighter 3 ventured away from the obvious World Warrior design aesthetic and dove into more of an esoteric story aesthetic.

Street Fighter 4 cashed all the nostalgia chips with the initial roster just being Street Fighter 2 again for everybody that slept on seeing SF characters in polygon form in Street Fighter EX series.

My feeling toward many of the newcomers is that they were uninteresting versions of old characters. I guess this is how some people felt about SF3, but SF4 didn't have the benefit of a stunning team of insane talent putting on a 2D animation clinic for video games. So the SF4 characters were boring, on top of being tremendously ugly looking.

Hakan is pure gold. A visually unique and interesting take on a cultural fighting style - back to the emphasis of WORLD WARRIOR.

Street Fighter 5 suffers a similar fate to SF4 visually, where I'm largely uninterested in it's continuation of the odious visual style of Street Fighter 4. This is the model of the old expression, "polishing a turd."

At least once I got past the visuals, the game speed and feel felt like Street Fighter. It didn't have that odd gravity of SF4 and the constant interruptions of time wasting micro-cinematic attacks during matches. I say this as someone who hated the amount of time Street Fighter EX wasted with normal throw animations, much less Super / Ultra moves.

Overall I'd say my favorite SF5 newcomers are Menat and G. Both do something right in terms of re-purposing the familiar, or just being so bombastically bizarre they could only exist in Street Fighter world (G). Although similar to my Fang complaint, a lot of the whimsy and flourish of G is diminished by the visual style of the game. I feel as though it's time for Capcom to abandon the classic 2D aesthetics (Capcom Design Works) of Street Fighter visuals, and craft something better suited to the output they produce (or subcontract out to be produced).

Ono era Street Fighter games are defined by the sheer lifelessness of them for me. Nothing about them is as visually impactful as Street Fighter 2 was, going from playing arcade games with small, limited animation sprites, to big bold player sprites in Street Fighter 2. Then Street Fighter Alpha and Street Fighter 3 series just existing as the talented teams at Capcom keeping 2D animation alive via game sprites.

Ono era is submitting to the tyranny of the polygon, and not bringing it to heel as Arc System Works did.

Capcom ought to be more deliberate in their future creations, and tread carefully between narrative characters and World Warrior style characters. I believe there can be a balance, but the absolute worst thing you can do in Street Fighter is be boring.

Just a cursory web search to compliment my plea for a Mongolian Wrestler (look at this visually rich martial arts culture and tell me Capcom of old couldn't mine here for gold) added to the cast turns up Dambe and Bokator. I'm sure there are so many more out there that could be added.

That doesn't mean we need to base everything off of every esoteric fighting style, if it's not particularly distinct, then they could do like Street Fighter 2 and borrow liberally from the movies, manga, and anime of the era. I'd like some homage characters for - Bolo Yeung, Sonny Chiba, Steven Seagal (ignoring his real world nonsense), Sammo Hung, and others. Note, homage - not rip-offs as evidenced by Lei Wulong being Jackie Chan until Namco was apparently told to knock it off and now Lei is just a lame derivative character instead of being the Jackie Chan rip-off in Tekken.

Mine other Capcom games of the era. I love Final Fight, and wish Carlos the Ninja would get the respect he deserves; but Saturday Night Slam Masters is sitting there waiting to be put to use. . .

Expansion of the roster by pursuing the inevitable future as well. There are several family men in the Street Fighter series. Pass the reigns to Mel Masters, Amy (Guile's daughter), Datta, or one of Hakan's daughters (maximum waifu-bux to be cashed in there if they set it far enough in the future and have a female Turkish oil wrestler).

In summary, new characters on the roster aren't replacing anybody. They should be added to co-exist and compliment the current characters; but at the end of the day the series has always been the Ryu and Ken show from Street Fighter 1 days (excluding boss and non-playable characters of that entry).

An inspired team would need to make a concerted effort to knock it out of the park. Leave the losers on the cutting room floor.

This may be controversial opinion, but I don't feel like time should be wasted on re-inventing the fan favorite characters in sequels. Devote that effort to the new characters, and just bring over the old characters. Then polish them up, but focus on making new awesome characters. So much nostalgia is placed on Street Fighter 2, but those same folks forget only Ryu, Ken, and Sagat were returning characters. Everybody else was a new weirdo at that time. New characters can work. They just need to be captivating!

Sadly I feel as if Street Fighter is lost. Street Fighter V is firmly in the soulless INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY state. Which is why new characters are so uninspired, game models vary so wildly, more regurgitation of decades old music, and we're back to box art for Japan and hideous steroid monsters for the West. Sorry, I tried to dig up the name of the American artist responsible for defacing Street Fighter V, but I couldn't damn well dig it up. He's not a bad artist, just tone deaf (although that may be more the fault of American culture) - like hiring a ska band to play at your grandparents funeral (and they weren't a rude boy or rude girl).

Street Fighter 4 at least resulted in an okay artbook with Ikeno and Akiman's artwork carrying the load. I don't think a product of that sort exists for SF5, although I haven't looked since it's such a mess. I miss the days of looking forward to Capcom art (purchasing the art books for titles I never played because I loved that art team). Now Bengus is apparently phoning it in for an easy paycheck (Street Fighter 5 is the Wings to his previous Beatles tier work), Capcom USA is letting their fanfic branch in Canada produce ugly derivative art for the games, and don't get me started on those abominations on the Character Guides. BARF! </River City Ransom>

So we may be cursed moving forward, unless a new team comes along with passion. Sort of how nostalgia for comic books fueled creative artists and writers to produce the inspired comic material of the 70's and 80's that are some of the defining works of the medium.

There's got to be a Cannon Bros over in Japan who have yet to infiltrate Capcom. Give some skilled and passionate fans the reigns and let them create something breathtaking.

I hate not loving Street Fighter, and being forced to endure 5-10 years between underwhelming entries.

I'd be up for scrubbing up matches if my schedule permits. Haven't played in months (non-portability of my CFN user ID means any progress made on PS4 is inacessible on PC), but that never stopped me before. It's like riding a bike - it a fist. :p

Eh.

Bold for the nationalities new to the franchise.

SF4 added 1 Mexican, 2 US , 1 French, 1 Korean, 1 Turkish, 1 Russian, 2 Japanese (if you want to count Oni), and 2 Mysterians (Viper and Seth).

SF5 added 1 Canadian, 2 Japanese (3 if you count Kage), 1 Russian, 1 Brazilian, 2 US, 1 Egyptian and 1 Arabic.
The issue is with the Mysterians (Ed, FANG, Falke, G, Necalli). If you assign them to their inferred nationalities however, that's 1 US, 1 Thai, 1 German, 1 Alien and 1 Aztec (or Mexican if you want to play Civilization).

Compare with SFZero:
4 US, 7 Japanese, 1 Italian, 1 Alien (Ingrid), 1 German and 1 Mexican if you count Juni and Juli.

I think the franchise is fine on this aspect.

Isn't Viper from the USA? The US flag appears when you choose her, and she's even an undercover CIA agent...

But yes, I agree with your point. Maybe the complaint should be in terms of how many newcomers have fictional styles (like Menat and Rashid) rather than real-life martial arts (like Laura and soon-to-be-released Luke), instead of how many nationalities are being represented in the series.

Maybe I'm this person right in front of you... nah probably not though.

Because it is... That's exactly what it is nowadays...

And to be honest, I don't think anybody "feels" passionate or inspired towards anything anymore. With the current state of the world and all.... I feel lately that the human race is exhausted.

Last night in a drunken stupor I downloaded SFV Champion Edition with the Season V pass. Haven't touched the game since 2018 so I can't wait to pull out my fighting stick tonight and check if it even feels like a Street Fighter game at this point.

Even then, has SF ever been a grounded game? Sure, some of the moves are based on realistic moves - or at least the realism that was found in whatever movies and manga the creators were reading at the time. But even SF2 had Blanka balls and psycho crushers. Take it from me, reality is overrated.

SFV is a game that is so profoundly terrible that it has convinced people that the terrifically horrible SF4 was a good game!

SF6 will be such an astonishing abomination that that it will make people look back on SFV fondly, even in spite of SFV being such an abhorrence!

I can only imagine what a hellish visitation SF7 will be like!

Good stats there Iggy, but if you compare the insane amounts of Japanese and American characters, these stats just don't justify the lack of international diversity that is presented. There's just way too many of the former nationalities to make the franchise kind of watered-down.

I remember being so excited when Menat came into SFV, not only was she a great design, but she was Egyptian, another new nationality to the World Warrior ethos. Which is what the designers need to get back to for future games.

We need some Irish, Australia and more African characters introduced into the SF series. Though I'm not on the side of wokeness, doing this would be beneficial and exciting to the franchise, and perhaps players from those areas can find a character they can be proud of that represents their homeland.

Pencilero, you bring up some excellent points. In regards to what you mentioned about Bengus, I wasn't too much a fan of his SFV art in the story mode. It seemed to me it was done in a rush and ill-inspired, for what as you mentioned just for a paycheck.

I'd also like Capcom to realize that "Western" (Caucasian, Japanese characters associated with Western aspects, etc) characters don't have to be blond. While it seems a silly complaint, hair color choices do make the overall roster look less varied.

This was a pretty hilarious meme of SF5.

The argument for "World Warrior" is less a checklist, and more - what unique fighting styles can we use in this fighting game?

I suspect SF5 blonde roster is an accident of negligence / incompetence, and not a subversive Aryan plot by Capcom.

The following is a more general missive not prompted by Baines post.

I hammered out two long missives that devolved into meditations on fighting games, the current pandemic, and deep depression some people may be experiencing. Rather than expose nerves, I'll say this:

Street Fighter V began development, and tripped over it's feet into a pre-pandemic world.

Guilty Gear Strive evolved through a pandemic era world (if anybody has insight on what percentage of development was complete in 2019 I'm all ears), and delivered a much more competent product at launch than the genre figurehead with the corporate backing of Sony.

Yeah.

There's a global pandemic in progress; and I am not unaware. Rather than mull it over, and suffocate it, I'll just put it out there - the pandemic has been intensely stressful and I see no end in sight. Mentally and emotionally I have not been this low in some time - perhaps my life.

Not having the luxury or privilege of working from home, losing my new job at the start of the lockdowns in 2020, and sidelining my plans to pursue a better tomorrow - still on hold. Everybody is losing time, but when you're behind the eight-ball, that lost time comes at a heavy cost.

And that's why beautiful art matters. It helps to uplift and inspire the injured soul. I find considerable solace in the buddhist hued lyrics of Armor Clad faith in this trying times.

quote:
I'm a fool, I know nothing
I take the role of a silly clown
But I won't turn my back on life
I'm a fool, maybe I'm worthless
But this world created my faith
So all I can do is stay hopeful and pray

I recognize that at the end of the day everything a company sells me is a product, but it doesn't need to be insulting in that admission.

You know, I try to stay fairly alert, myself. There is some absolutely brutal okizeme out there, and no shortage of tricky mix-ups to put you on your back in the first place.

I'm sure we can all agree that the current balance is less than perfect. Sure, one can argue that pretty much everyone has a chance, but let's not pretend it's even odds on every matchup. If we're going to talk fairness, I think that understanding the underlying game mechanics is crucial. Without that, you're not going to be able to tell who's winning, who's losing, or why.

You can still have fun if you remain oblivious to all this, but odds are that you'll eventually end up getting clowned on by someone that knows the game better than you. My advice is to grab a cup of coffee and try to keep those eyes open. We're all part of this same community.

I do not want to sound flippant here, but let me say that I hope your metaphorical V-gauge is building and that you can use your V-trigger to help turn things around. As a famous announcer in another game once said, sharpen your fangs. It's not the end.

Heheheh, this is way more clever than my Writing Thread stuff. Anyway, it's a pretty rough okizeme world out there whatever one's philosophy, so I totally sympathize with the desire for our hobby to feel a little more uplifting and beautiful even if it's commercial art! Just imagine the excitement if something beautiful like SFZero 2 or Justice Gakuen came out for the first time amidst a pandemic! I can understand the energy around Strive.

On that note, while Headmaster Iggy is away since civilized Europe actually goes on vacation in August, anyone up for a preview Lagfest with Akira and Oro next week, Aug 20/21 or 21/22? Name your timezone and good times and we can make it happen!

I feel bad for missing out on the last few invitations sent out by Red Falcon for lag battles (the invitations, naturally, were sent out on expensive stationary sealed with red wax.) However, I'm not going to miss the siren call of new characters. This invitational should feature me being even more hilariously inept as I try to learn characters mid-match and engage in plenty of "what does this button do?" tactics. Which outfit looks best on Akira? How badly will I get destroyed by Red Falcon's day-one Oro? Let me know when everyone is available so we can find out.

I'm in EST. I say set the date and time, anybody that can show up - do so.

Otherwise it's like herding cats trying to nail down what time works for everybody and adjusting the schedule non-stop. Set the date and time. Let us schedule for it.

Regular casuals in fighters would be nice. Picked up Strive on PC since it went on sale finally, and bought SF Anniversary Collection as well.

Going to try grabbing GBFvs on PC since everything is on very good sale. Even if the netcode was suspect, and I didn't click with the initial roster (was banking on Ladiva) and some of the mapped inputs that couldn't be replaced with normal inputs.

Oooh, that's weird.
Does she appear in Akira or Oro's story mode? Maybe they couldn't get the previous seiyuu because everything was so last minute, and they had to hire a new one just for these scenes?
Strange that they would have the same issue for both languages, though... Except if there's some anime reference I'm missing like with R.Mika.

Get ready, fighters, it’s MADMAN GAKUEN: BURNING JUSTICE LAGFEST (preview)

Headmaster Iggy has gone on vacation missing and only the most heroic lagfest fighters can rescue him! So give Akira a spin, and ask yourself: “is my Burning Heartbeat blazing with sufficient justice compared with either of these magnificent legions of heroes who are united by fate?!”

Time: Aug. 20 (F) 9:00pm EDT / Aug. 21 (Sa) 10:00am Japan

Recommended Characters: Akira, Sakura, banchou Ryu, schoolgirl Chun Li, Ibuki, anyone else in a uniform, Oro (I guess)

Acceptable Stages: Rival Riverside, Kanzuki Beach

Dojo: Look up and join the Cafe dojo via CFN in case we can finally use it for cool things in tournament mode??

If you’re new, share your CFN here so I can invite you. We’ll do another soon if you can’t make the time.

WE’LL PROTECT OUR SCHOOLS!

PS boo on Sakura’s new face…but my god wait Akira’s story mode uses the same text boxes as the Nekketsu Seishun Nikki lifesim??!? They can do whatever they want!

D'oh!

Well, hopefully they are marathon gamers (my buddy and I can play casuals for hours) and I can sneak in some matches after work. *fingers crossed*

Car repairs and opting to wait on a potential online patch forced me to wait on re-buying GranBlue Fantasy Versus (it's one of the handful of PS4 games I own). Hopefully the GB parent company doesn't turn this into a Sony PSN grade - "You missed our once in a console generation sale? Enjoy waiting until the platform is dead for the next sale MWAHAHAHAHAHA!" *stares angrily at Jeanne D'Arc digital edition*

Ohhhhh, these are happy, sunny days at Taiyou Gakuen: Akira is charming and she is also a beast. I have high hopes JUSTICE will be delivered at last when she banishes damnable Cammy, Gouki, and Rashid from top tier. So come join the beach party on Friday/Saturday. I was playing around with Tournament Mode invitations but you can probably ignore them---I'll invite you the usual way as long as I know your CFN.

I've really been enjoying using Akira so far. I like her mix-up game and she can keep am opponent guessing. So far, my win-lose ratio with her has been really good. Of course, with how badly the online handles in SFV, that could change.

I haven't bothered with Oro except in survival mode.

"The Lagfest Times: Justice Edition" , posted Sat 21 Aug 15:16post reply

Thanks for the great games! Oro in his win pose sez: they hit the spot! Just in from the school newspaper club at Madman Gakuen: it’s the latest issue of the Hot-blooded Justice Lagfest Times, filled with brotherly love, burning justice, and high-flying gang violence.

There were masses of troubled youth from Gedo High School running around, including so many Akiras that everyone got exhausted trying to keep track. Some students seemed marginally interested in actual book learning, and the newly elected successor to the previous Iincho/Class President tried to bring some order.

However, locals report that an old man who just wanted to take his turtle for a walk was harassed by a local banchou and his sister. It’s too bad, because it’s an extremely well-rendered turtle. Hardworking local mechanics also learned the hard way that they are not necessarily on the same page as delinquent biker girls.

Meanwhile, an out-of-town sukeban under Ishmael’s command temporarily took control of Gedo’s gang.

Akira’s Justice Gakuen-style launcher is a great way to see all kinds of sights you never knew existed, though the most improbable sights were Akira’s maid cosplay from Nekketsu Seishun Nikki 2 and Daigo in a tracksuit (!!) to match Akira’s athletic wear.

Some students left campus for somewhere more exotic, though per top school reporter Juan’s headline, Teenager goes to space and gets crushed by a dictator. Rugal, better known as Hyo “Detestable Madness” Imawano, presided over 20+ wins, though the occasional heroic banchou came out on top.

In the end, it’s best to just let rowdy youth unwind at the beach, though I still wonder how Akira keeps her bike from getting rusted in the waves.

Good times! I think the only reason we ended up on the space station was because Juan launched me that high. Taking damage from combos is one thing, but having Akira's punchy punch helplessly bounce you around 50 feet in the air is an entirely new sensation in SF5.

"Justice Lagfest 2: Headmaster Iggy Edition" , posted Tue 14 Sep 12:57:post reply

We finally tracked down Headmaster Iggy, and it turned out he hadn't been brainwashed by ninjas, he was just at the (Kanzuki?) beach! That's right, it's:

MADMAN GAKUEN: BURNING JUSTICE LAGFEST 2 - HEADMASTER IGGY EDITION!

So don't make Akira cry, and instead charm her with your fighting skills this weekend. Are you at least as enthusiastic as someone (hello!) who just spent actual money on an auction for a 1997 arcade flyer that says, "[This cabinet] Operating with Burning Vigor"?! If you are operating with similar vigor, bust out your student ID, steal your brother's if you have to, and come on over! We may or may not change the time last-minute, but you're just gonna have to figure that out!

Time (Updated): Sept. 18 (Sat) 11am EDT / Sept. 18 (Sat) 4pm UK / Sept. 18-19 (Sat/Sun) 24:00 Japan

Invited Characters: Only characters in school uniforms, track suits, or biker garb. I mean it this time!

Acceptable Stages: Rival Riverside, Kanzuki Beach, Kasugano Residence

PC mods to convert pointless characters into Daigo?: You bet your @$$!

Now, as proper Gedo High School students, we shall all sing our glorious school anthem (you DID memorize the lyrics, didn't you???) in honor of Akira and Daigo. ♫ The path on which a man must travel/Is dark and steep/This is the path of Gedo/ ♫

We can try to start an hour earlier if you can definitely do midnight! Much more beyond that will make it too early for other US regions.

Though actually, our only hope of beating Red “Detestable Madness” Falcon is probably to fight him while he’s unconscious like the kids do in Hayato’s ending.

It wasn't worth mentioning, but Cyber Akuma was announced a few days ago. He looks like Akuma with some cheap cyber doo-dads pasted onto his model, but that's the way Cyber Akuma has always looked so he's consistent if nothing else.

What is worth mentioning is that SF's fashionista Rose is getting a spiffy Ruby Heart outfit. This upcoming lagfest may be dedicated to high school hijinks but next time we're playing Marvel.

Thanks everyone for today's SFV Nekketsu Seishun Nikki 3, especially Rugal for entering Midnight Bliss mode for a four-timezone, three-continent lagfest!

And thanks to you inspired geniuses, I was so happy to see not only Daigo and Akira, but also Roy, Kyosuke, Edge, and Kyoko! (Oh, and also Skullomania?!)

I was sad Hayato was on vacation, but Oro was a perfect stern-faced subsitute PE teacher (play ballll! where is Shoma?), and since every single character in the whole game wore their own tracksuit (yes, literally everyone, even the ones you forgot existed), it felt like the hot-blooded teacher was right there with us.

Things were rowdy around Gedo High School: schoolyard brawls with suspected assassins, rival sukeban appearing, lazy banchou slacking off, fights in the shower room, people cutting class for karaoke, mostly naked women pushing rivals off bridges, and exhibitionist men getting thrown off rooftops.

I'm not sure if the last straw was Akira's constant illegal bike parking, or the Kazamas punching President Lincoln in the nuts, but Kyoko had to instill discipline.

Speaking of which, I'm sad to confirm that unlike SFIII, Oro's nuts are no longer visible. Sorry about that.

Hey Maou, I sent a dojo request for "GekigangerPC" to the dojo. If you get the chance to approve it I would appreciate it.

I can use this laptop to get more consistent access to my ethernet cable and play online since my brothers also use the PS4. Will I use this opportunity to learn a new character? Probably not. I have been playing "Zangeif Fighter V" for 5 years now and don't plan on mixing it up. Maybe through in some Rashid or Abigail.

More importantly, anyone want to try out some Kyanta 2 this and have some laughs this weekend, 9:30 AM Japan time either Sat or Sunday?

Anyway, now that Akira is in SFV, Justice Gakuen is officially SF canon and thus on-topic forever in every thread. This is a good chance to remind you that Iggy's marvelous translation of that CFN interview with Itsuno on Justice Gakuen is massively better than the colorless, talentless excuse for an official translation that Capcom USA published.

Also, these Akira juggles by Momochi fill me with joy. Let's try to reproduce them when we head back to Gedo High School to celebrate as soon as Prof's hand is back in action, or anytime anyone wants a lagfest in the meantime!

Nice! Now that's some quality game memorabilia.

The more I watch Akira videos, the more ridiculous she seems. I remember early theories were that her air combos were just for fun and she needed that charge blast to get in on fireballs. Instead, it seems as long as Akria can get a little bit of brotherly love Akira can land hilariously brutal mid-air damage. Why did such a hilarious character come so late in SF5's lifespan?

So, Capcom is selling these two costumes and the money goes to charities against cancer.

Obviously the idea is good (Especially since Capcom will give money anyway even if the costumes don't sell, which is nice), but we're mostly here to comment how fug these costumes are. It's like they each received each other's costume with the wrong instructions on how to wear them, and Chunli ended up with Ryu's suspenders on her shoulders while he uses her garter belt as a holster?
I'm not sure what's going on here. Also, while SF5 has no trouble highlighting Chun's breasts to raise awareness, I feel like they could have done better to emphasize Ryu's prostate. Just saying.

I’m hoping the outfits come with a costume code that will tie all those belts into place.

It looks like Ryu is wearing a long sleeve version of Ken's outfit, with bits of pink vinyl strapped onto it.

I uninstalled SFV a while back, but I wonder if Chun-Li's outfit uses work from other outfits. Something about it looks vaguely familiar.

If you can remember back to the dark ages of SFV season 1, we were blessed with Hot Ryu, who was at least as hot as Hot Chun Li, but I guess the tables have turned at last. Hooray for a good cause, but what are they wearing, exactly? Is it in-universe cosplay of the actual June outfit that's available from Star Gladiator? A quick check on Event Hubs's comment section reveals that people think these outfits are "dope," of course.

Is Chun-Li's suit a less trashy version of her training outfit?

While the costumes are overdesigned in an SNK sort of way, I do like the asymmetry of the arm guard thing on Ryu. Uneven character designs are fun since they work in 3D... when the animators bother to keep the character consistent and don't just flip the model when they switch sides.

Those are good questions, but unfortunately I have no answers. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if SFVI does turn Darkstalkers (among other Capcom franchises, like Saturday Night Slam Masters) into part of the SF canon universe.

In fact, I was kinda expecting that SFV's final character would actually be Morrigan or Haggar (though Haggar is already part of the SF canon universe).

It would be a weird choice to include Darkstalkers, but SF story is already a mess, so adding also vampires and other monsters to the mix probably is not so out of place.

Some fighting game characters will help flesh out a game and make it feel like a richer experience. Others only exist to get punched in the face by the player character so they can show they are worthy to take on the more interesting boss characters. Congrats Luke, you join the ranks of Franco Bash, Dairou from MK, and all the other professional bench warmers of fighting games.

What is interesting about Luke is that he appears to be a testing ground for SF6. The differences in his V-trigger and his ability to escape throws seems like trial runs for mechanics in future games.

As for Luke, I don't have much hope for how Capcom treats him. Alex, Abel, Decapre, Necalli, ... They all just get pushed to the side so the series can return to the SF2 roster.

The first sentence led to the second.

Capcom didn't do anything to Necalli, or more accurately with Necalli. He was literally the face of SFV at the beginning, but Capcom was seemingly tired of him before they even bothered writing a story for the game he was representing.

A meaningful story presence, a real presentation of power, even decent lore could have gained Necalli a fan base even if others were turned off by his visual design or gameplay. Instead, Capcom did nothing, if not actively attempting to sweep his existence under the rug while rushing to get back to Ryu vs Bison.

One of the many, many mysteries of Necalli will always be who disliked him more, fans or the staff. Did they look at the usage stats? Did people like me complain too much? Did the initial designer disappear and leave no one to advocate for him? Unlike other obvious failures like Abel, Alex, and soon to be Luke, Necalli barely got a full year of “his” game before being banished. Sure, he’s dreadful and out of place and I’m happy he’s gone, but I’m puzzled anyone bothered to add him in the first place if they were that uncommitted to him.

…sometimes, the silliest solution is also the most likely: maybe Capcom was worried that Namco would notice they stole Tekken 3’s dumb War God/Ogre character’s story word-for-word, and decided it would be less embarrassing if Ryu blasted him into a pile of goo as soon as possible before anyone noticed.

In a series where even characters who must die for the story to make any sense (Nash, Rose, Vega, Gouken) keep coming back to life, it is going to be hilarious if Necalli ends up with the dubious distinction of being the only SF character who actually stays dead.

Indeed.

Then again, Seth didn't seem to be loved either, and he turned out to be the only SFIV fighter besides Juri to return to SFV, even if very different from how he was before. Maybe a similar solution could be used for Necalli, doing severe alterations to him before he returns? Very, very unlikely, but not impossible.

As for Luke, apparently Capcom does plan to bring him back in SFVI - the question is whether he'll manage to return as the new face of the series or just as a secondary fighter with no more relevance than Zangief or Blanka. To be honest, I don't care; all I hope is that Laura also returns in VI - not only because she's Brazilian, but because I consider she's one of the few newcomers who actually succeeds in the World Warriors concept of representing the fighting style and country she's from.

Rashid and Menat are also cool, but I'm not sure if their fighting styles (Menat's psychic powers aside) are actually real like Laura's or Luke's.

(and I also think Capcom should add a Kim Kaphwan lookalike to be Ryu's true friendly rival in SFVI, rather than have Luke in this role)

Reading over Necalli's information in How to Make Capcom Fighting Characters it sounds like the developers weren't thrilled with the results either. They were given a mandate to make a new "dark hero" to fill the Akuma slot and were told that Akuma was popular in the West due to his mysterious aspects and his traditional garb. I guess nobody realized that Akuma is mainly popular because he's essentially a playable boss while being Ryu cranked up to 11. Akuma's habit of jumping in from nowhere to defeat everyone with his incredible skills is an appealing idea in a fighting game. Being a snarling weirdo who wants to eat people and occasionally vomits on the floor is not appealing in any circumstance. I get the feeling Necalli made it into the initial roster due to deadlines more than anything, with the producers hoping for the best that he might find an audience. It's not too surprising that G eventually took the SF5 boss role, since he had a personality.

G is way more interesting than Necalli, but it's weird to see him as SFV's "boss" when there's barely anything that we know about him so far... we don't even know if his goal to become "president of the world" indicates that he's evil or if he means well.

Hopefully he'll return in SFVI, either as the boss or at least as a side antagonist (kinda like Gouki in SFII or Dictator in SFIV), so that his true intentions will be clearer.

Hey, remember Luke? Well, even if you don’t, he’s in the game now. A few quick thoughts:
The John Crawley fireballs look good.
The braces are a nice touch.
His youthful, exuberant moves remind me of Sean. Why couldn’t he simply be Sean? I say this as someone who is completely indifferent to Sean.
The charging aspect of his punches make him more convoluted than he looks. He puts me in mind of Ed, where his moves were simple but getting maximum damage took a great deal of work.
Why do all his outfits feel similar and are similarly awful?
His v-trigger is most certainly a trial run for SF6.

Has anyone else tried him out?

I'm guessing it might stay the same.

The old excuse was that Unreal Engine didn't support differential patching. From what I recall, SFV takes all the individual game files and packs and compresses them into around 50 or so "pak" files. Thus you end up with individual pak files that can be several GB in size, and without differential patching you have to redownload the entire file even if you only change a single byte within a single tiny asset file that is contained within it.

There is a problem with this excuse. Unreal Engine apparently did add support for differential patching years ago.

However, I've also heard the excuse that such differential patching support is platform-dependent, and that the PS4 is one of the platforms that does not support it. This isn't just an Unreal Engine thing, it also depends on the how the platform itself (Valve, Sony, etc) handles patches.

And there is the matter than it is simply easier for companies to just replace whole files. Capcom particularly might not care about the PC's fate if they really can't supply smaller patches for the PS4 release, but even if it is possible on both platforms they still might not care.

Ouch!

Yeah, I seem to recall developers discussing patches and platform holder approval processes, so consoles may be stuck with goofy update procedures.

I mean, it's over a decade into the so called Playstation "Network" (this may also apply to Xbox Live as well - Microsoft hasn't seen my money in. . . nine years?) and you still cannot gift games to friends. This is easily the most annoying thing to me, as I like to give my friends games they want for presents or if a game goes on sale (e.g. Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Maxi Boost ON that was recently on sale - marking the third fourth time I've purchased it); but I am reduced to sending them a gift card and message "Please buy X Game".

Sorry, wandered off topic. It's just as a consumer, not a PC loyalist that I find this lack of common features so very frustrating.

Did all his trials last night. My thoughts:

- His animations are terrible. His normals look goofy and even his forward/backward jumps feel unfinished.
- The Popeye bee sting arms will never not be dumb.
- Still not a fan of the charge punch-style moves, but he utilizes them much better than Cody.
- Story mode was such a joke. One fight with Guile and Bengus phoned in those cutscenes. Unless they find a way to transition Luke into the protag of SF 2010, I don't ever want to hear Capcom tout this guy as the "future of SF" ever again.

While I don't outright hate the guy, it's clear the devs would rather do another Rival Schools/JG and it irks me that Capcom would just roll it into SF6 than make a separate game. At this point I'd rather have the unfinished build of CFAS get leaked and reminisce on what could have been.

I think it could be done, after all - most of the iconic artwork from the glory days of Street Fighter 1992-2001 were a grab bag of wild styles.

In a different time, I could see Luke amongst Bengus's classic taffy traps and crazy V-taper.Aesthetically pleasing, proportionally questionable.

Let's all join forces and lend Capcom our energy, and hope they don't waste it on Street Fighter 6. Call me a fool, I felt the same about the prospect of a Street Fighter 5. . . Although at that time of SF4 I refused to wear the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia and embrace the polygon and micro-cinematic ultra move gimmicks, so I was alone in that hope of a better tomorrow.

Was Luke supposed to be an even larger showcase for SF6? The cut moves that were found suggest that SF6 might have more of a Justice Gakuen/A3 feel. Did the producers feel the need to cut back due to balance issues, leaving us with a slightly "meh" character?

Hey, remember Luke? Well, even if you don’t, he’s in the game now.

Has anyone else tried him out?

Did all his trials last night. My thoughts:

- His animations are terrible. His normals look goofy and even his forward/backward jumps feel unfinished.
- The Popeye bee sting arms will never not be dumb.
- Still not a fan of the charge punch-style moves, but he utilizes them much better than Cody.
- Story mode was such a joke. One fight with Guile and Bengus phoned in those cutscenes. Unless they find a way to transition Luke into the protag of SF 2010, I don't ever want to hear Capcom tout this guy as the "future of SF" ever again.

Yeah, the majority of the internet had reason to dislike Luke. He turned out to be a big disappointment in many ways. Capcom's character design team clearly doesn't care and has run out of ideas.

Killbox tweeted about unused moves he'd found while messing with the game files. A QCB+P aerial, apparently a Target Combo, and apparently custom air projectiles?
