In the spirit of the season, this thread is about favorite internet- or game-related things that have decayed or perished from this mortal coil that we would like to see revive, undead or otherwise. Or things trapped in a state of un-being that need a good Belmont to put them out of their misery, either/or. For me, it's:

1. The shambling corpse of Insert Credit: seeing one of the greatest sites on the internet lie unburied, like the corpse in Antigone, is the most gruesome sight imaginable for such a venerable institution. Nothing left to do but venture into necromancy.

2. Estpolis II/Lufia II: we've already talked about the legendary hero's fall into darkness elsewhere. Once every 100 years, when Christ's power is at its weakest, the dark lords at upper management allow another series to be sacrificed so that overbudget Final Fantasy sequels gain eternal life...

3. UNDEAD FRED: WHERE ARE YOU ALSO PLEASE FIX OUR BOSOMLESS DRAWBOARD

4. Rugal: actually, he showed up last week.

5. Iga: did the endless Nocturne/Symphony clones he manufactured in Death's laboratory level turn on him and devour him? Harmony of Despair of Sorrow of Xbox is vaguely appropriate as a Frankenstein's Monster, come to think of it.

6. Shenmue: Trapped between the world of living (its soul enshrined inside of Ryuu Ga Gotoku) and the dead, Shenmue longs for Suzuki to feed it the blood of its debased GTA successors so that it can again rule over the sandbox world.

7. The Legacy of the Golden Age of Square Soft.
The last remaining hero of that period has finally been defiled by the necromancers at SQEX: Romancing Saga2 is going to be ported to mobile phones, with crazy DLC shit all over and "upgraded" graphics and sounds to fit the higher profile screen of the telephones. Nothing is sacred.

For every ghost town of a site like Insert Credit there are a dozen that have vanised with no trace left behind. I would point out some old sites I used to enjoy but for many of them their information has been erased and their domains co-opted. The internet is great for many things but archiving material is not one of them.

As for me, I would like to see the return of the Darkstalkers series that Ono keeps going on about. First of all, I would like play it. Not only that, but I want to simply look at the game. For me, Vampire Savior was a high water mark in the field of 2D animation. I would like to see today's animators reach for that same level of creativity and craftsmanship.

Secondly, there is this small, strange sect of people out there who are disgusted by the idea that someone, somewhere might enjoy a game. The combination of an older franchise, Capcom and Ono would be enough to send these people into fits of rage that can only be vented through some random post on a message board. I don't understand these people at all but who am I to deny them the chance to act elitist about a videogame?

Personally is more of a business of Ono touching the franchise instead of the game going 3D (which would be 100% unavoidable if the games where to be brought back). Of course a proper high quality 2D zillion frames per second game where capcom would try to take 2D sprites to the utmost level of excellence would be what most Vampire fans would like, but there is this clear line between Dreams that are possible and stupid illusions that are so silly that even thinking about them would be a sin.

Certainly saying "behave or Ono will pull a Vampire on us" is the newest trend to scare off kids from taking any sort of stray path.

I always thought current street fighter style suits for Darkstalkers than street fighter. But I dont want that style for Darkstalkers, too.

It would be like this; there's no strawberry&lemon flavoured ice cream so I have to settle with strawberry &lemon flavoured gum. A sour one.
Where do I stand?

8. The Wild Arms series

With its creator Akifumi Kaneko having resigned from Media Vision in 2008, chances seems slim that the Western Sci-fi series could be making a comeback.

But then again, the series sort of lost its soul when it stopped using its traditional artist Wakako Ooba. Let it rest in peace.

I miss Insert Credit too... but it's not completely dead..? It may be going on to becoming a heritage.

So at which game did the series go south? I only ever played the first one, even though I think I have used copies of the rest stashed somewhere.

I can only think of the first Wild Arms with fondness. The Western/Giant Robot/Post Apocalyptic setting was wonderful, as were the character designs.

Now I will have to resurrect an old box of games or two!

It kind of went South on the 4th installment which had more of a sci-fi than a western feel and some really weird cutscenes. I liked the game, but it was quite different from the previous three. The field played like an action game with bullet time and the battles were hex-tile based.

The full turn South probably took place on the fifth game when they swapped the director, composer, and also swapped the illustrator with a porn doujinshi artist. Fujimoto Hideaki

[edit] Come to think, Kaneko's departure may also mean that we won't hear any more Michiko Naruke soundtracks sung by the series vocalist. Is Wizard of Oz for the DS going to be their final work together? Hopefully not.

Ah, this reminds me, since the first one was so blatantly cribbed from elements mixing FF VI and Lunar:

9. Lunar series: My very favorite, yet the very epitome of the undead series. The developer of the superior Mega CD originals, Studio Alex, was destroyed years ago, and few of the original Game Arts staff are really directly with the company at this point--including the crucial company president, Miyaji Youichi. Now, it wanders the earth like Ys (toho, like wanderers from Ys??) in a state of unlife, perpetually being remade in increasingly low-fi editions (and with awful translations), with the occasional outright vile hellspawn (Lunar Genesis/Dragon Song) being summoned to befoul its sacred Mega CD and Saturn legacy.

10. Working Designs, relatedly. Victor Ireland continues to prowl the gaming world and appear in odd places--his necromancy revived Sunsoft USA, no less!--but English speakers are poorer off for the absence of translators who were actually truly good English writers. Certainly the only games I'd ever play in English. I would sacrifice a few villagers to revive WD, but the world of RPGs has been overtaken by Star Ocean-hell, so perhaps I shall leave this one buried.

It's Halloween week and I'm going to keep updating this list as I see fit. In addition to queuing up all the perfect sorceress themes from FFVIII in my music player on constant loop to keep in the spirit.

11. Matsuno Yasumi: The mysterious vanishing of the erstwhile creator of Ivalice and FFXII is a haunting 'death.' Matsuno's dark tale reads like something out of an English Romantic novel, with the brilliant creative genius literally being driven mad by the pressures of either his own towering vision or the vile machinations of Square society around him. They say he still lives, beyond the void, cackling away and scheming about revenge, or at least about making more fascinating games with complex political worldviews with severely underdeveloped characters.

Ah! I suddenly find myself wishing this were a real meeting in a nice cafe where we could drink Turkish coffee or mint tea while discussing the plot of MadWorld at a leisurely pace cos it's PROFOUND, especially given the histories of the creators involved.

We should totally do some sort of West Coast MMCafe gathering. Maybe have it coincide with a more general event. For instance, I'm planning on attending the Stumptown Comics Fest next year:

http://www.stumptowncomics.com/

It's a little ways off, but it sounds like alot of cafe members are close to Portland. It would be a great way for me to kill a dozen birds with one stone. I've been wanting to visit Portland for the Compound Gallery and the awesome awesome beer. And now I've got the added lure of a comic con, multiple childhood and college friends who have relocated as well as Cafe members.

Anyone else on board? We got like half a year to figure things out.

Oho, a fun idea, if only it were remotely possible to ever get to Portland for a reasonable sum of money! Bafflingly, it consistently costs more to get to stupid Portland from the Bay Area (and probably from SoCal too) than it does to get to the East Coast or even Hawaii half of the time. If they're trying to keep a small-town charm or are secretly a parochial Silent Hill village of the undead (BACK ON TOPIC), they have an excellent strategy!

Now give me your list additions, there's still four days left!

I'm up for it of course! You should also check out Floating World Comics (right near Compound Gallery). Just let me know.

Oh, and Maou, have you looked at prices from Oakland rather than SFO? It's usually really bargain basement when I've flown.

Oho! I was going to bury the Undead Thread for the year, but in honor of the Professor's magnificent Halloween wallpaper:

12. CING: How could I forget? The demise of the source of some of the very finest writers, as well as the best approximations of American noir culture I have ever seen in a Japanese game, is enough to drive one to reconstruct CING like a Frankenstein's monster, or alternately to renounce humanity and rule over the world of darkness like Dracula after his wife's death. O woe.

Studio that made licensed games and mediocre games (though fans of drag on dragoon will say otherwise), they died for good this year after Nier was done. With Cry On cancelled, not even tears can be shed for them. I fully expect them to resurrect in some horrible form to take vengeance on us all for being so unloved.

14. ... Kah kah kah.

Now that Compile has literately gone on a which hunt and has recovered most of his pre bankruptcy IPs, we can only desperately hold to a vain thread of hope so that Sega may lose it's stinking grip on the Puyo Puyo franchise.

Now if you excuse me, I have to make preparations since the ingredients for the dinner guests are bound to arrive shortly.

It's nothing short of an exaggeration to say that I have waited nearly a year for a proper reason to post these marvelous links:

But it was not by my hand that I was again given flesh...

I was brought back here by humans who wished to pay me tribute

What is a man!? a miserable pile of secrets!

Let us pray that Chi no Rondo's sprites may also get recycled for the next 16 years or more! Why not go an extra mile and add the original Vampire Morrigan sprite and / or KoF '96 Iori sprite

Ah, this was one of my favorite games for the PC-Engine. October-November is shaping up to be expensive for me.

The Rondo of Blood videos reminded me of just how beautiful this game still looks. And Ishmael, I love that little ping noise! To this day, I still associate the sound of a chain whip striking a skull with that noise (as opposed to what it REALLY sounds like!).

So they are either going to be a month late for Halloween or eleven months early! I do hope this game is decent, or at least as decent as Splatterhouse is going to get.

Speaking of decency, has anyone seen what Disgaea is up to nowadays? Never mind their financial issues, between this and Criminal Girls it seems that Nippon Ichi is working through some personal issues as well.

Well, it seems that if now you fall into temptation, you'll do so in High definition graphics.... I'm probably the only one that didn't noticed that earlier (amidst refuting all of that spanking?).

Yes, it's all looking really nice-- I love that the protagonist in this one is a vampire with a werewolf sidekick. I will almost certainly spend ridiculous amounts of time on leveling through the first three or four stages and then get bored with all the time wasting.
