I'm not as up on my KoF lore, so I didn't realize that Kyo was designed to be the polar opposite of Ryu. That's actually a clever route to take with the protagonist, since so many fighting games have a Ryu-like archetype as the first character available on the select screen. It was almost like the game was saying, "You may not have tried this game before, but you probably know how to play this character." Having the primary character be a naturally gifted schoolkid instead of an earnest martial artist certainly made Kyo stand out from the crowd. True, Kyo was still doing fireballs and uppercuts back then but it was a start.
