Estpolis/Lufia fans: the site for the DS "rebirth" of Estpolis is live.

Scream in agony as frumpy Maxim is reduced to a cheap amalgamation of Squall and Cloud with idiotic attitude!

Quake in fear as Selena's talk of the Republican Army and other tired military tropes balloons the game's world from a calculatedly idiotic and simple background outline into an unconsciously idiotic Tales of-esque kludge to get in your way!

Tremble in dread at the billing of the game as yet another "action RPG" instead of as a "brilliantly laid-out puzzle dungeon RPG that Wild Arms tried and failed miserably to copy at least five times!"

Groan in pain as uninspiring voice actor performances draw attention to characters who were never supposed to be anything more than archetypes!

....

Actually, the appearance of this site has done a good job of recreating the dread and lamentations that the appearance of the Island of the Void in the sky creates among the populace in the story.

While I understand the immense fear coming from the direction the game is taking, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

Also, even though I love Lufia 2 and still play it on occasion, I do wonder how much of this "change" is being brought about not by terms of a redesign but more of technology now allowing them to create what they at first envisioned instead of what we first got and loved. Sometimes a flawed take on a vision ends up being better then what the original vision was, even if the creator may not feel the same.

As I told someone else, if the game is even half as fun as Ys, it'll sell in droves.

I don't remember the original games being square soft produced.... Well, maybe this explains why some characters now look so metro-sexual gay that I feel like piercing my hands with a needle.

this old vs this new (site updated)

Bonus content for DS release

EDIT : older AND newer at the same time ... Have I missed on a sudden rise of the Estpolis disease?

Oh, good, now I can get the low-fi Estpolis I of yesteryear together with the hellish eroge-styled "shiny" art that has plagued low-budget releases over the past decade!

I'm trying to think of something more embarrassing than Estpolis' new makeover(s), but I can't. Maybe FF X-2. Maybe.

Why don't you try this being changed into this I could try to search for a more detailed comparison (I remember checking some interesting websites in earlier '09) but my eyes are already burnt

It should be noted that the JP cover art for the game that would become Renegade is pretty far removed from the big-headed style of Kunio that you see in that pic.

Kunio had a pretty generic 80s hero face in that one... though whether you like that 80s more or less than the cheeseball 80s in the Renegade cover is up to you. Whenever I look at it, I'm torn between how much I like the 80s stylings of things like HnK, and the overwhelming cheesiness of things like Death Wish 3.

What is this crap? That looks even worse than the DS game's art.

ようこそ、絶望の宴へ!

I'm glad that Toxico could at least defuse the unending agony of these neo-Estpolis abominations with these...links. Every one of them (including Otokojuku) is in better taste than those character "designs."

All I have to say is...NOMURAAAAAAAAA!!!

(Yes, I know he doesn't do the character design for every S-E game, much less every metrosexual looking protagonist, but I'd say he started this entire mess by making it trendy.)

A shame considering it was looking like a great action game.

I was thinking on letting this topic just die and sulk into oblivion, but the pain of having a 3ltrs drink into my bare foot quickly reminded me the existence of this game. At nearly less than two weeks of it release, I can feel nothing but the utmost agony when even my eyes attempt to gaze any of the new character designs that can be found in the site. Perhaps everyone was part of some weird race of medusas, and the 16th bit pixel art was not enough to clarify this fact to us.

Everytime, everywhere dude!!! Nothing better than a good ninja to protect your back (as long as they come from a Thomas Tang/Joseph Lai production, of course). Neither Joe Mushashi nor Ryu Hayabusha can even match such deadly perfection...

NINJAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
