A friend of mine got to see Hayao Miyazaki at Comic Con today. He just posted his impressions here:

http://blog.weigy.com/meeting-hayao-miyazaki/

It's a really fun read, full of nice observations and anecdotal details describing how Miyazaki comes off as in person. I'm star struck... and I wasn't even there!

There seems to be tons o cool/weird stuff happening at Comic Con including:

MIYAZAKI MAKES A RARE VISIT TO THE US! WOOHOO!

Halo Anime Omnibus film (including a short by Mamoru Oshii!)

Marvel shows off trailers for Wolverine and Iron Man Anime.

Tim Burton unveils Alice in Wonderland film

Any Cafe members make their way to Comic Con this weekend?

Certainly not me! Despite what my sleep schedule may lead people to believe, I'm way out on the east coast.

Comic Con business hasn't been getting me too excited this year, though I do wish I was present to get one of those limited SF4 sticks that everyone else seems so disgusted by. What can I say? I really like the all-white body with the bright orange stick and buttons.

Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland trailer pisses me off for a number of reasons. I'm very sick of his style, I'm very sick of Johnny Depp playing WACKY JOHNNY DEPP CHARACTERS, and I think I'm already offended by the CG. I'll wait and see, though.

Wolverine and Iron Man anime... ehhhh. I'm all for different interpretations of characters, but it seems that all that's going to make them what they're purported to be will be the claws and the suit respectively. I'm not necessarily sure whether that bugs me or not. The Wolverine trailer did nothing for me, but the IM one did look like a ton of fun.

So am I! We both need to get on better sleep schedules!

I'm cautiously optimistic with the Wolverine trailer. Animation is nice, could be fun and it has a kind of 80s-bubble-economy-violent-feature-anime feel to it. It looks like it's got some Kawajiri influence, but I wish they'd have taken it further.

But Iron Man. WOW! That was some of the most exciting animation I've ever seen. It just blindsided me! Actually made my pulse race!

The suits looks pretty perfect to me and I LOVE the way they move. I'm glad they're actually drawing everything instead of using cel shading, which is what people seem to be defaulting to these days when animating complex machinery and other things that require really crazy good drafting abilities to draw.

I really, really loved the Alice in Wonderland trailer. But I hope Johnny Depp wont be too much his Charlie persona. I didnt get anything from the trailer for such worry but the resemblance. Well we'll see.

I didn't get to go this year because so many companies are cutting down on treating their employees/artists. I got a free trip to NYCC though, so I'm not complaining. It's probably good that they don't blow SO much money partying.

Glad Miyazaki has some jolly left in him. I feel like he's been pushing to see if he can win the title of "World's Grumpiest Old Man".

As for Alice in Wonderland...I like Tim Burton, I like Johnny Depp, I love Alice in Wonderland...what could go wrong? Why lots and lots of ugly polygons, of course!

When I saw the trailer for "Where the Wild Things Are" I suddenly became interested, thanks to the tasteful use of CG...Alice in Wonderland is exactly the opposite.

Some day, someone will actually READ Alice in Wonderland before doing his adaptation and notice it's a creepy book about a 4 years old with dark hair. And that's what makes it interesting.

Jan Svankmajer did an amazing adaptation that fits the bill (minus the dark hair).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5wHMgTPF-s

And Jaromil Jires also did a wonderful job with Valarie and her Week of Wonders, which isn't directly an Alice film, but it's also kind of like, the best Alice film ever.

Czech filmmakers are really good at making hauntingly beautiful nightmarish surrealistic films starring dark eyed little girls.

While that Wolverine trailer had a Kawajiri vibe going it was the Kawajiri of the Highlander anime. Oh well, at least the Iron Man trailer was fun.

Of the news I've come across so far I'm most happy to hear that Marvelman/Miracleman has been rescued from publishing limbo. That was a comic I always wanted to read and now I'll have the chance. But that's news concerning a comic book so I don't know why the hell it was being discussed at SDCC.

As of right now this is my favorite picture from the event. But what is bothering me right now is this photo. Who is that figure in the slouch hat behind Commando Cody? It looks for all the world like The Shadow but I can't find anything to confirm that. Normally I'm not interested in 12 inch dolls like that but I would kill -or at least maim- to get my hands on a figure of The Shadow.

Yikes! You went there! I didn't want to say it, but yeah, I agree. It's too bad all of Kawajiri's latest films have been really bland, phoned-in animated adaptations of existing franchises (Animatrix, Gotham Knights, Highlander, and probably this, if he's even working on it).

Yeah! I didn't know Kawajiri by name, but yeah... the general aesthetic kind of reminded me of Ninja Scroll and such. Could be a fun ride, but it definitely didn't get me pumped like IM did. Glad everyone else seemed to like the IM trailer as well, though!

Nobody mentioned this yet, but the Tron Legacy trailer (formerly shown as TR2N) was back, and is now available online in good resolution! I really think it's a tasteful updating and I'm curious to hear more about the plot. This could be a lot of fun in 3D.

HAVE A TRAILER

Some neat toys and junk at Comic Con, too... though both my plastic-junk-buying and WoW-playing (at least, until next expansion...) days seem to be behind me, I can't help but want that DC Unlimited Sylvanas figure! I'll stay strong, though, I promise.

For anyone who's still playing that junk, best of luck to you! Just remember: when guild drama is actually causing you real life displeasure, it's time to cancel that account!

Just got back from the Con, damn am I sore.

Some caps I took from the booths:

Bayonetta demo. Fucking awesome. Dante who?

Cammy and Chun cosplayers at Capcom's booth.

Chamba artwork of Viewtiful Joe at the UDON booth.

Felicia sketch by Omar Dogan.

Ibuki sketch that Dogan was working on at the booth.

Karin poster by Dogan (there was an Ibuki poster next to it, but it was covered by a piece of paper when Dogan worked on the above sketch).

Alex and Ryu sketches by Joe Ng.

Didn't really get to see anyone since most of the Saturday events weren't all that interesting to me (that and having to wade through literally a thousand people every second just to get anywhere).

Couldn't get into the Iron Man 2 panel because the stupid committee doesn't clear out any rooms after panels end, so people can come in and stay there all day, screwing everyone who even bothers to get in line. Oh well, I'm sure someone sneaked a camera in there so it'll likely pop up on Youtube later and get promptly yanked afterwards.

Tried some of the other games on hand, such as the Turtles in Time remake. Copped a few artbooks and DVDs, saw a bunch of crazy cosplayers, then finally went home to crash.

There were some Chris and Jill cosplayers that I saw before I left, but my camera died on me before I could take a pic. Surprisingly, they wore the RE1 costumes and not the "oh my god what the hell have you done Capcom" RE5 versions.

Speaking of ah, different takes on Alice, I think I remember first hearing about the British "Lost Girls" comic book by Alan Moore featuring adult Wendy, Alice, etc. in unusual and grown-up situations...

I'd be kind of entertained to read more about the interchange this time around between Pixar's John Lasseter and Miyazaki. I've always gathered that Miyazaki is sort of bemused (though perfectly pleasant) whenever his self-professed superfan is around introducing him, proclaiming how awesome Miyazaki is while sort of hinting that it would be cool if Miyazaki thought that Pixar were like the great American equivalent of Ghibli or something. Pixar seems to be great, mind you, but Lasseter gives an impression of an almost idol-worshipper sitting next to a guy who's sort of thinking, "Thanks, now move along, kid," though in the absolute nicest possible way.

To Freeter: Why didn't you mention you were going? It would have been awesome to meet a fellow Cafeer there.

I saw the Jill, but there wasn't a Chris with her when I saw her.

This being my first Comic-con, I had a freaking blast and will say that was one of the best days of my life. GOOO GOD did that kick ass.

I attended the Futurama, Simpsons, Mythbusters and Arkham Asylum panels. I met a ton of celebrities: Mark Hamill, Masi Oka (who was literally just walking around talking on his cell phone), Brian Posehn, Peter David, Leinil Francis Yu, Brent Spiner, Leonard Nimoy, Adam Baldwin, Edward James Olmos.

AND I felt like the place was just brimming with my childhood since Kevin Eastman, John Kricfalusi and Doug Tennappel were all there. They're the creators of the TMNT, Ren and Stimpy and Earthworm Jim, respectively; all of which were shows that I LOVED as a kid (and still love now).

Jhonen Vasquez was there too. I also got to meet Eric Powell (creator of The Goon and a hell of an artist and storyteller) and Sinn Sage, a really cute girl who does fetish porn. She's skinny, but she's one of the very few skinnier girls who I still find attractive.

Um...I was there all day, and have a bunch of stories. It would be easier if anyone had any specific questions that I would try to answer to the best of my ability.

Also, since I'm not really much an anime guy, I can't say too much about the anime offerings there. Sorry folks.

Oh, and I thought that Marvel's booth sucked ass.

Yup, the Con is awesome, and it just gets better every year.

The best stuff happens in Hall H. I remember when they had the Snakes on a Plane panel, and even though I didn't care for the movie, I went anyway. Sam Jackson lit the place up. The crowd went nuts when he did the famous "I hope they burn in hell!" line.

I hope the rumors of the Con leaving San Diego aren't true, since it generates a lot of revenue for the city and is the most exciting thing we got going here.

Oh yeah, that was a bit unsettling. The writers (everyone on the panel was a writer and/or producer) quickly addressed that at the very beginning of the panel and basically said that the rumors are true that the talks have fallen through, that they still love the original voice actors, that there is still hope still, and that other than that mention they were basically going to avoid the subject. This just made me worry more.

They DID mention some cool ideas about future episodes. That helped alleviate the worry somewhat, but not completely.

One of the coolest bits of randomness was walking through a hall (which I actually think was H unless my memory is off) and right there in the middle of the hall was Stan Lee just signing autographs just for the hell of it. He had some guys with him who were trying to rush him to the next panel he was going to, but he actually stayed so that he could sign as many autographs as he could. I'd heard before that Stan was an awesome guy, and I got to see that in person.

I had a similar experience to the Sam Jackson thing at the Arkham Asylum panel. Paul Dini and the guy who hosted the panel were both pretty bland, boring speakers. They didn't do much to keep the energy up. But when Hamill's turn came, he did his Joker and the entire room went nuts! He basically carried the entire panel.

My buddies and I drove around San Diego a bit after the Con. That place was gorgeous and I wouldn't mind living there other than the fact that it would be a little far away from my family. It actually reminded me a lot of downtown L.A. which for me is a good thing.

Yeah haha, I was relieved to hear that he was in good spirits. I was afraid he might rampage through Comic Con tearing down bridges in his wake like a giant Ohmu. The man does not mince words. My buddy at Comic Con did a followup post regarding a screening of Ponyo where Miyazaki introduced the movie. He still had some very bold things to say such as:

"He said that it was a conscious and active decision to avoid 3d animation or computer-assisted graphics even more because of this trend, adding the statement that the computer has the ability to creep and take over an artist’s mind… and ruin it. Thunderous applause was heard after he finished this statement."

There were some heartwarming anecdotes too, like:

"Miyazaki said one of the best praises he heard about the movie was that when a 5 year old called her grandmother and told her that “Grandma, I’ve just watched a movie made by another 5 year old!”"

You can read the complete post here:
http://blog.weigy.com/ponyo-on-the-cliff/
(Post some kind words if you can! It's a new blog and it'll encourage him to keep writing and drawing!)

quote:

Where the Wild Things Are was one of the most exciting trailers I've seen in a long while. It was downright touching how thoughtful that movie looks. I'm definitely way more excited for that flick than Tim Burton's Alice (which I want to be good, but admittedly feels a little phoned in at the moment).

quote:

Speaking of Kawajiri, my buddy Weigy got to meet Kawajiri's constant second in command, and basically his successor, Yutaka Minowa! He was there at the Revoltech booth (Revoltech's are the greatest action figures ever). He was super cool and laid back and humble and funny and just awesome all around. I mean, the guy is a legendary animator, one of the best there's ever been, and he also has done character designs and storyboards for incredibly influential films like Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D. He's totally set in his career and legacy, and yet he was completely down to earth and was happy just to hang out with a fellow artist (and fan!).

Weigy returned to meet Minowa the next day (at his invitation), and Minowa was like "oh by the way, here's my friend Yasuhiro Nightow." Nightow! Creator of Trigun and Gungrave and countless cool characters in manga, film and toys. One of the most influential character designers of the last decade. And he was totally humble and chill and friendly too!

Both of them actually asked for his business card, and asked to look at his sketchbook (which they loved!) and they even drew pictures for him!

You can read all about the experience here:

http://blog.weigy.com/

I wasn't even there, but man I'm just so happy to be able to share in such a life affirming experience! I mean, these are the kind of guys that inspired my friend (and myself) to pursue the path of art since we were kids. It's unbelievably reassuring to meet them and find that they like your work and that they're totally cool, happy, awesome people that you could be friends with.

While Lost Girls sounds interesting I have yet to read it because I feel there are holes in my literary education. Reading up on the original fiction that the characters are drawn from is an easy enough task. The trouble is that not only do I not know much of anything about the language and culture of 19th century English pornography I'm not even certain where I should start to learn about that sort of thing. Unless the comic includes an extensive bibliography that gives suggestions for outside reading I'm going to have to hold off on Lost Girls until I can get caught up on my classical smut.

Lost Girls is more whimsical than pornographic (though its content is explicit). Although his stated intention was to create pornography, the stories feel more like an esthetic statement about pornography. It's almost like an exercise. It's more "erotica" than "pr0n" if that makes sense?

I think if you are already familiar with the literature that the characters come from (Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland etc) then you'll know just about all you need to get it, and possibly enjoy it. Your mileage may vary depending on your reaction to the different drawing styles. My only letdown with the book is that the art is (perhaps intentionally) untittilating, but not in any way that really recalls Victorian art.
