quote: I'm cautiously optimistic with the Wolverine trailer. Animation is nice, could be fun and it has a kind of 80s-bubble-economy-violent-feature-anime feel to it. It looks like it's got some Kawajiri influence, but I wish they'd have taken it further.
Yeah! I didn't know Kawajiri by name, but yeah... the general aesthetic kind of reminded me of Ninja Scroll and such. Could be a fun ride, but it definitely didn't get me pumped like IM did. Glad everyone else seemed to like the IM trailer as well, though!
Nobody mentioned this yet, but the Tron Legacy trailer (formerly shown as TR2N) was back, and is now available online in good resolution! I really think it's a tasteful updating and I'm curious to hear more about the plot. This could be a lot of fun in 3D.
HAVE A TRAILER
Some neat toys and junk at Comic Con, too... though both my plastic-junk-buying and WoW-playing (at least, until next expansion...) days seem to be behind me, I can't help but want that DC Unlimited Sylvanas figure! I'll stay strong, though, I promise.
For anyone who's still playing that junk, best of luck to you! Just remember: when guild drama is actually causing you real life displeasure, it's time to cancel that account!

Just got back from the Con, damn am I sore.
Some caps I took from the booths:
Bayonetta demo. Fucking awesome. Dante who?
Cammy and Chun cosplayers at Capcom's booth.
Chamba artwork of Viewtiful Joe at the UDON booth.
Felicia sketch by Omar Dogan.
Ibuki sketch that Dogan was working on at the booth.
Karin poster by Dogan (there was an Ibuki poster next to it, but it was covered by a piece of paper when Dogan worked on the above sketch).
Alex and Ryu sketches by Joe Ng.
Didn't really get to see anyone since most of the Saturday events weren't all that interesting to me (that and having to wade through literally a thousand people every second just to get anywhere).
Couldn't get into the Iron Man 2 panel because the stupid committee doesn't clear out any rooms after panels end, so people can come in and stay there all day, screwing everyone who even bothers to get in line. Oh well, I'm sure someone sneaked a camera in there so it'll likely pop up on Youtube later and get promptly yanked afterwards.
Tried some of the other games on hand, such as the Turtles in Time remake. Copped a few artbooks and DVDs, saw a bunch of crazy cosplayers, then finally went home to crash.
There were some Chris and Jill cosplayers that I saw before I left, but my camera died on me before I could take a pic. Surprisingly, they wore the RE1 costumes and not the "oh my god what the hell have you done Capcom" RE5 versions.

Speaking of ah, different takes on Alice, I think I remember first hearing about the British "Lost Girls" comic book by Alan Moore featuring adult Wendy, Alice, etc. in unusual and grown-up situations...
I'd be kind of entertained to read more about the interchange this time around between Pixar's John Lasseter and Miyazaki. I've always gathered that Miyazaki is sort of bemused (though perfectly pleasant) whenever his self-professed superfan is around introducing him, proclaiming how awesome Miyazaki is while sort of hinting that it would be cool if Miyazaki thought that Pixar were like the great American equivalent of Ghibli or something. Pixar seems to be great, mind you, but Lasseter gives an impression of an almost idol-worshipper sitting next to a guy who's sort of thinking, "Thanks, now move along, kid," though in the absolute nicest possible way.

To Freeter: Why didn't you mention you were going? It would have been awesome to meet a fellow Cafeer there.
I saw the Jill, but there wasn't a Chris with her when I saw her.
This being my first Comic-con, I had a freaking blast and will say that was one of the best days of my life. GOOO GOD did that kick ass.
I attended the Futurama, Simpsons, Mythbusters and Arkham Asylum panels. I met a ton of celebrities: Mark Hamill, Masi Oka (who was literally just walking around talking on his cell phone), Brian Posehn, Peter David, Leinil Francis Yu, Brent Spiner, Leonard Nimoy, Adam Baldwin, Edward James Olmos.
AND I felt like the place was just brimming with my childhood since Kevin Eastman, John Kricfalusi and Doug Tennappel were all there. They're the creators of the TMNT, Ren and Stimpy and Earthworm Jim, respectively; all of which were shows that I LOVED as a kid (and still love now).
Jhonen Vasquez was there too. I also got to meet Eric Powell (creator of The Goon and a hell of an artist and storyteller) and Sinn Sage, a really cute girl who does fetish porn. She's skinny, but she's one of the very few skinnier girls who I still find attractive.
Um...I was there all day, and have a bunch of stories. It would be easier if anyone had any specific questions that I would try to answer to the best of my ability.
Also, since I'm not really much an anime guy, I can't say too much about the anime offerings there. Sorry folks.
Oh, and I thought that Marvel's booth sucked ass.

quote: Question about the Futurama panel, Will the original voice cast be returning or not? There is rumor that they are auditioning new voice actors, which if they do I won't be watching the new episodes.
Oh yeah, that was a bit unsettling. The writers (everyone on the panel was a writer and/or producer) quickly addressed that at the very beginning of the panel and basically said that the rumors are true that the talks have fallen through, that they still love the original voice actors, that there is still hope still, and that other than that mention they were basically going to avoid the subject. This just made me worry more.
They DID mention some cool ideas about future episodes. That helped alleviate the worry somewhat, but not completely.
quote: Yup, the Con is awesome, and it just gets better every year.
The best stuff happens in Hall H. I remember when they had the Snakes on a Plane panel, and even though I didn't care for the movie, I went anyway. Sam Jackson lit the place up. The crowd went nuts when he did the famous "I hope they burn in hell!" line.
I hope the rumors of the Con leaving San Diego aren't true, since it generates a lot of revenue for the city and is the most exciting thing we got going here.
One of the coolest bits of randomness was walking through a hall (which I actually think was H unless my memory is off) and right there in the middle of the hall was Stan Lee just signing autographs just for the hell of it. He had some guys with him who were trying to rush him to the next panel he was going to, but he actually stayed so that he could sign as many autographs as he could. I'd heard before that Stan was an awesome guy, and I got to see that in person.
I had a similar experience to the Sam Jackson thing at the Arkham Asylum panel. Paul Dini and the guy who hosted the panel were both pretty bland, boring speakers. They didn't do much to keep the energy up. But when Hamill's turn came, he did his Joker and the entire room went nuts! He basically carried the entire panel.
My buddies and I drove around San Diego a bit after the Con. That place was gorgeous and I wouldn't mind living there other than the fact that it would be a little far away from my family. It actually reminded me a lot of downtown L.A. which for me is a good thing.

quote: Glad Miyazaki has some jolly left in him. I feel like he's been pushing to see if he can win the title of "World's Grumpiest Old Man".
Yeah haha, I was relieved to hear that he was in good spirits. I was afraid he might rampage through Comic Con tearing down bridges in his wake like a giant Ohmu. The man does not mince words. My buddy at Comic Con did a followup post regarding a screening of Ponyo where Miyazaki introduced the movie. He still had some very bold things to say such as:
"He said that it was a conscious and active decision to avoid 3d animation or computer-assisted graphics even more because of this trend, adding the statement that the computer has the ability to creep and take over an artist’s mind… and ruin it. Thunderous applause was heard after he finished this statement."
There were some heartwarming anecdotes too, like:
"Miyazaki said one of the best praises he heard about the movie was that when a 5 year old called her grandmother and told her that “Grandma, I’ve just watched a movie made by another 5 year old!”"

When I saw the trailer for "Where the Wild Things Are" I suddenly became interested, thanks to the tasteful use of CG...Alice in Wonderland is exactly the opposite.
Where the Wild Things Are was one of the most exciting trailers I've seen in a long while. It was downright touching how thoughtful that movie looks. I'm definitely way more excited for that flick than Tim Burton's Alice (which I want to be good, but admittedly feels a little phoned in at the moment).

Speaking of Kawajiri, my buddy Weigy got to meet Kawajiri's constant second in command, and basically his successor, Yutaka Minowa! He was there at the Revoltech booth (Revoltech's are the greatest action figures ever). He was super cool and laid back and humble and funny and just awesome all around. I mean, the guy is a legendary animator, one of the best there's ever been, and he also has done character designs and storyboards for incredibly influential films like Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D. He's totally set in his career and legacy, and yet he was completely down to earth and was happy just to hang out with a fellow artist (and fan!).
Weigy returned to meet Minowa the next day (at his invitation), and Minowa was like "oh by the way, here's my friend Yasuhiro Nightow." Nightow! Creator of Trigun and Gungrave and countless cool characters in manga, film and toys. One of the most influential character designers of the last decade. And he was totally humble and chill and friendly too!
Both of them actually asked for his business card, and asked to look at his sketchbook (which they loved!) and they even drew pictures for him!
You can read all about the experience here:
http://blog.weigy.com/
I wasn't even there, but man I'm just so happy to be able to share in such a life affirming experience! I mean, these are the kind of guys that inspired my friend (and myself) to pursue the path of art since we were kids. It's unbelievably reassuring to meet them and find that they like your work and that they're totally cool, happy, awesome people that you could be friends with.

HELL FUCKING YES!
Btw, how in the hell does one put messages in a link? Like when you post a URL, but rather than the URL itself showing like I did above, it has a message? "Good news, everybody!"
Also, you put the text between the two bracket boxes [link=here]textgoeshere[otherbox] It does it automatically if you highlight a message you've already typed and then hit the URL button.
That's "Good news everyone".
Just messin'. Thanks!
Bad news, everyone! The supercombuster supercombusted.
Also: recently recited while driving around with a friend on a heisted golf cart:
"Hey Fry, I'm driving with my ass!" "That's the best thing I ever saw!"
