If it was about THAT Akira I actually wouldn't mind seeing it, live-action or not

Wow. How could they have used the wrong Akira? Ha ha ha!

Regardless, I am going to be cautious here and not get too excited yet.

This IS Hollywood. They will retcon or not acknowledge any material that came before it. If they want this Akira, then why not let it be the hellspawn that it will grow and be something worse than the live action Street Fighter.

I don't even know what kind of effort WENT into making such a stupid mistake...that actually boggles my mind, since Justice Gakuen isn't exactly well-known. I guess it was just the first image that showed up for "Akira" on Google. Brilliant.

The only things that come up when you Google image search "Akira" is Otomo's work and porn. You really have to go out of your way to pull up Rival Schools.

I hope the movie turns out well. Here's a shortfilm by the director:

DiCaprio has always been artsy. I believe his father was an underground cartoonist, and for one of his birthdays he commissioned a giant painting for him by Todd Schorr. I'd believe that he has a genuine interest in making this a good movie. It's of small consolation to me that they're going more for the comic than the movie (cos it'd be kinda pointless to remake a movie that hasn't aged). Also, Otomo's involvement is good, i just hope he doesn't take the stance "well, i'm not American, so you Americans decide what's good for America."

Now that I think about it, isn't there a random motorcycle gang punk in Akira that looks kind of like that?

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

But in all seriousness. Wha?

I still can't figure out the people that get excited over these movies. Hollywood never writes them for fans of the material, and just about always winds up deviating so badly from the source that they might as well have made a new movie... I'd have thought that people would catch on and stop going to see them after the millionth franchise got "re-imagined" into something retarded, but I guess not. "They're making Akira into a movie with a bunch of white people who solve mysteries and clean up the environment using computers and cool gadgets? That sounds exactly like the story I remember! This will be awesome."

Don't forget the obligatory 5-seconds shot of the American flag, and the subtle ending on how it's the love of Christ that may have saved them all.

Maybe i'm just naive but I actually have hope.

Alot of people were groaning about Tobey McGuire producing the Robotech movie. But think about it? Why would actors get involved with producing such movies unless they are genuine fans?

It is much more preferable than 60 year-old guys in suits who only know what movie to fund by which agent puts on the best power point presentation.

No, they're not necessarily making it because they're genuine fans. Some studio went on the internet and overheard some beanbags fawning over Evangelion and got dollar signs in their eyes. But instead of realizing "Hey, they're REALLY into this show... maybe we should make the movie sort of like the show" they got a bunch of people to "punch things up" by adding in CG talking dogs and putting people in tanks for no reason or whatever other random stupid idea you can think of. Again, watch for the danger word: "re-imagined."

Here, if you haven't seen this, this should sort of give you an idea of where I'm going with this.

They probably are fans though. Akira is a pretty respectable movie that's socially acceptable to enjoy and Leo's dad is a comic book artist and the director is an animator. But even if they are fans, that doesn't mean it will be a good movie.

My biggest fear with Akira right now is actually the director. I saw his short film years ago when it was part of Mike Judge's The Animation Show, and I thought it was terrible. It's a really obnoxious film. If he brings that sorta attitude with him to Akira, I think it'd be a terrible match. At the same time, he did 50% Grey a while back, so maybe he's matured as a film maker since then.

Which one was his? I've got the Animation Show DVD, and I've seen 50% Grey there, but I didn't know he had another film on the same show...
