Thanks for the link to that message board, there were some very informative posts there. After browsing there I now have a better idea of what sort of potential the characters have. That's a vast improvement over watching people exploit the same overpowered moves in location test videos.

All the cool kids are in the Broken Avatar Club.

Anyway, I was really excited to hear more about this game, but... now all I care about is hearing more about Blazblue and the next Melty Blood. Sorry, SBX!

Already saw the stuff there, but thanks! Lots of interesting fighters in the new Tougeki, and since Arcana Heart is now coming to the US a month after the second one hits Japanese arcades, I can find out if I care about that too! Though I have a pretty bad feeling.

Oh, thanks, I hadn't seen the last new characters of Arcana Heart 2. Besides the colour of Dorothy's shoes and the misspelled "de" Conti, I really like the girls...
The new arcanas look nice and all, but I'm afraid that with so many possibilities, some totally broken combinations stay unnoticed before the release...
Oh, well. If they make a Full version afterwards, it's no big deal.

And of course, the biggest concern will be : will the centers actually buy the game, after the travesty of the FULL version, especially with so many other games coming ? I would hate it if it ended up being The Rumble Fish 2 all over again.

OK then, if someone must, then I'll try some of that BasaraXlove you're talking about (let's not forget the X, people).

I hope Maeda will end up like in the first test, Hondam and Oichi like in the second, and Kenshinsama like in the fourth.
And most of the other character can be scrapped for all I care.

THEN we would have a truly broken and fun game. It could even top Hokutono Ken !

The thing is they spent way too much time on balancing SBX, like since last Nov? AH2 hires debugger this January and the game is coming out in March? Do they really have to go to the opposite extremes?

That's not it. The real problem is they don't know what they want to do with this game. The game has no direction, and now they have to pick one as the game is almost finished. And after each test, they tried to shape it to comply to what the loudest trolls didn't like.
The changes applied to Kenshinsama and Hondam from test to test are so amusing and sad.

Well, changing Kenshin's 2A to overhead is quite surprising. I can't wait to see it remains the same or not in AOU. Hondam's dramatic tune down is probably a distraction I believe. It's not cool to have too many Hondam players in loca test that they can't see other possible broken elements. I am kinda surprise to hear Mouri got nerfed in the last loca test though. His traps and assists have a lot of interesting interactions.

Now I think it almost everyone got nerfed somewhat in the last loca test other than Kenshin's 2A. Basically 12/08 ~ 12/09 is the broken version, and 12/15 ~ 12/16 is the nerfed version. Maybe they will find the balance point in between since then, it's already 2 months damn it.

You're right. 2 months is plenty of time to find creative way to break Oichi and make her stronger than Foxy.
I have high hopes !

Oichi being strong? Mahahahahahahaha... You are not serious right?

Well, I have a feeling that she is already strong enough but no one really plays her yet. The good thing is she did get stronger a bit each time we see her in the past loca test. Maybe this time her super will do double the damage, or evil hand attacks are quick and brutal...

No, no, I meant "they would try to tweak her to make her not suck, and the tweak would make her a total balance breaker".
The way they so cleverly "tweaked" Hondam.

Another great idea to make the game more interesting : Hire manglobe to create yet another clumsy anime intro !
Yeah, that will help the game quite a bit.
Maybe not to actually become a good game, but obviously this wasn't anyone's concern to begin with.

The word on the street right now is, the game is too balanced, smooth and glitch free... Let's try something insanely unbalanced, broken, glitchy like BlazBlue, Arcana Heart 2 and Street Fighter 4... Good game will never get popular, this something Capcom has to change about this game. You know, create something close to Yun/Chunli in SF33, OSagat/Claw in SF2X, Iroi/Chizuru/Daimon in KOF98, Mishimas in Tekken, Eddie/Slayer/Testement in GGAC. That's the ultimate secret of making a game popular my friend... Learn Capcom learn!

That's a bit like complaining that Days Of Memories: Girl's Side doesn't have the same game engine as KoF. The problem with the word "good" is that there are a lot of different definitions of that word. While I don't know if Basara X is going to become some sort of high-level play godsend or not I suspect that in it's attempt to translate the over-the-top atmosphere of Basara into a fighter -which is what I suspect a lot of players are looking for- it will be successful.

Well, I'll believe it when I see it, but hearing that it's balanced at least on some level is very reassuring. I think you're tragically right about people craving bad balance, though...or at least some easy way to dominate. Every time I go to an arcade, all I see are people using a small set of characters and abusing a small set of moves. It's sickening.

The opening isn't great, but it beats the hell out of the last one.

Well, I think that the overall thing was that Capom wanted ASW to make this game as balanced as possible, so that the actual BASARA fans will be more inclined to play it. If it was going to be another HnK, the hardcore gamers might end up liking it more, but it would come at the expense of attracting a wider variety of fans, and thus wouldn't do much to make Capcom and ASW money.

That said, I think that this game is going to be fine. If it is indeed more balanced, that might do more to give the game some longevity, as well as, again, attract more gamers to it. For instance, games like Melty Blood did better overall because it was a game that was both based on a license that people loved, as well as being a predominantly "balanced" product (most of the time). If BASARA can do that on its own end, it will be a success.

But to answer the bait : I don't know. 2007 is long gone, and long. Tenkaichi maybe ? Tekken 5DR ? In the arcades, either Battle Fantasia or Arcana Full. I haven't hold a clear record of my time there.
Either way, if you intend to answer that this is totally unacceptable, let me tell you I totally agree with you. Which is why Savior already won my 2008 year.

The video is really good (thoug not in quality) but I'm not excited about Basara license at all. I mean, it's Capcom, they have a lot better stuff than this series to lend to AKSYS and make a good fighting game. I really hope AKSYS will riceve more attention by Capcom to make 2D fighters. I know the animation should have done better, but the last 2 GG games were very good gameplay-wise, and I don't complain the quality of AKSYS products anymore.

Well, two things:

For one, it's Arc Systems Works who's making this game. AkSys is the company who takes the time to localize games. It's easy to get 'em confused, I'll grant you...

For two...the BASARA license was utilized because it was a sound decision, for more than one reason. Main one being? It's no secret that the brand is one of Capcom's newest and yet VERY popular brands in Japan, to the point that only a veritable powerhouse series, like Monster Hunter, clearly outweighs it in importance on Capcom's "profitability scale".

So, in other words, it's a game made by a prominent fighting game developer, for the Japanese fans that adore the franchise and its characters. I highly doubt that the game will ever come over here, seeing how Devil Kings tanked so badly, but again, this was something that ASW and Capcom wanted to have done. Street Fighter 4 is going to be the thing for Americans.

No.
Basara is an OK license, but nothing like a DMC, Onimusha, MH, Bio Hazard or even the latest Rockman spinoffs. It's maybe as profitable as Full House Kiss, and of course better than any Clover licenses, but, oh well.
It is an intermediate series (the budget for each title shows it) and it doesn't exist outside Japan.

Fixed.

I don't see how, seeing as "obscure" fighters like Arcana Heart often end up on the PS2 only anyways.

Of course the game was coming to PS2; this was a given.

But it is a bit worrying for Wii, as the natural popular successor to PS2 in Japan (especially in attach rate among females), that neither ASW nor Capcom think the game is worth a port. For many reasons, the situation for SBX can hardly be compared with Arcana Heart. Unlike Examu which probably have never even seen a Wii development kit in their lives, ASW has a Wii development experience via the release of Guilty Gear XXΛ, and Capcom is (or was?) trying to progressively convert Sengoku Basara's mostly female audience to the Wii with the Heroes Double Pack.

If I recall, Basara sold very poorly on Wii? Still, we may be seeing a port at a later date, as we so often do.

I'd like the game downloadable on PS3, myself.

Also, I think the quick home port is a good idea. They've been beta testing the game so long that I've grown bored of it before even playing it. If I could be motivated to spend much money on the arcade version, it probably wouldn't be long before I would be too tired of it to bother buying it on console.

I thought so too, since the first week of sales were pretty low, yet in their latest Financial Quarter PR, Capcom stated they were "satisfied" with the final sales of the Wii version. However, who knows what they expected in the first place.

A PS2 port does make the most sense, but a PS3 one would have made me a hell of a lot happier. Region free and all. I'd say I hope Battle Fantasia starts a trend but... Battle Fantasia isn't going to start any trends.

Well, I look at it this way: Starting today, (if not earlier, haven't been keeping track) Capcom JP's main site has officially given the BASARA series its own portal, showcasing that it's a series of importance to them that they look to be investing in for the long haul.

Then there's also the notion that the PS2 port of the game will basically get the "KOEI Musou LE" treatment as well. The Special Edition of the game will include the OST, character cards and deluxe packaging deal, for 8390 yen.

So the series' may never get released out of Nihongo-land ever again. By the looks of things, Capcom JP seemingly could care less, because the series has enough of a following in Japan, that they can afford to wash their hands of trying to make heads or tails of the matter regarding "Devil Kings".

Hell, recent BASARA offerings have been, overall, selling better in Japan alone, than traditional Rockman games (re: Zero and ZX) have been doing in the same region of the world. And for both series to basically get the same type of development cycle and monetary expenditure, yet Rockman is the clear-cut "veteran" franchise with a significantly larger fanbase, I would think that's pretty good, on BASARA's behalf.

I think it goes without saying that the Wii is going to be the new turf for the BASARA series...eventually. If Capcom could put friggin' Monster Hunter on the Wii, there's little to suggest why they'd do anything different for BASARA, which I will clearly admit is a less important commodity than MH.

But I guess the big thing is, that as long as the PS2 is available, and Capcom keeps supporting it, the transition is going to be slower, and people will be less incited to transfer over to the Wii. Ideally, the upcoming SB3 would be Wii-exclusive, and would do more to enforce this transition. But Capcom, being Capcom, may still decide to capitalize on the PS2, until it coughs its last breath some time in 2009/2010. In which case, we might be prone to having a few more "PS2/Wii" simul-releases in the future...

"Well, she [Oichi] got a pretty good 100% combo and that's why.

1) you need to activate that devil's hand.
2) Oichi has to be 0.5 to 1 character away from her opponent in the corner.
3) In devil's hand mode: 6B (overhead) / C (low) > A > 214A > A > 214A > ~"

What was all that beta testing time about again...

I love that. No matter how long a fighting game is in beta, it takes like...5 minutes for someone to break it as soon as it's released.
