So the exclusivity strategy returned, huh? Well, in terms of sales, it helped a lot SC2, from what I remember.
Still, Vader and Yoda in SC4... they are nice characters and all, but Namco-Bandai will need a great story-excuse to justify them being there (even though they will later be disconsidered, like Link and Spawn).
Anyway, maybe these are the only "out of place" characters... (unless they also added someone like Harry Potter, fighting with the Gryffindor Sword).
I just hope it turns out to be a good game after all, because from what I have read, SC Legends was already a disappointment...
I can be any person in the world ... maybe I'm this person right in front of you ... or maybe I'm not !!

Heh, I mean, hey, Inoue's one of the most talented artists on the comics market that I can think of, and unlike the other guests, his art would actually be relevant (!!), even if the result might be another Mitsurugi. Still, if art's going to be incongruous (and I hate that it is), it might as well be with someone who's so excellent that you don't worry about it.
edit: and yeah, Musashi in Soul Calibur would be AWESOME. We must get you on Namco's board so they can make sensible guest character decisions.

Wait, Mine Yoshizaki designed a Soul Calibur character?? Do you have a link to it?
I think Sgt Keroro should be the next guest character. Imagine Keroro vs Yoda. I'd buy the game just for that.
Also, Rid, have you seen his artbook Mine Blue?
It seems right up your ally based on all the art on your website. I highly recommend it. It's got tons of great illustrations new and old, even some that he did for Capcom waaay back in the day. It's also got little blurbs by other artists talking about how Yoshizaki is the nicest, most likeable guy in the industry.
One guy (the character designer for Super Galdelic Hour) compares Yoshizaki's ability to draw panty shots to a fresh spring breeze!
I love Yoshizaki's work. His work is fun, inventive, playful, a bit sexy, but never dirty. He's like a living time capsule of everything I loved about late 80s-mid 90s anime.
Like you said, Mine Yoshizaki stuff is always welcome!

Yes, it's the link posted a few posts up in here. I hope it isn't a fake.
As for Mine Yoshizaki, the best part of his art is that, while it's fanservice-based, he knows where to stop, to keep his characters likeable.
I've been considering in buying his artbook, but I'm out of money (exchange rate with Argentina sucks more than you can imagine). I did got some scans of it, for now that will do, and yes, it's fantastic. It's an influence on my style, artists like Mine or Paul Dini, with their bold lines and colorful designs.

quote: Well when a look at the pics it doesn't look to a new characaters at all for me. IMO it looks much more to a 2P costume for Sheherazade than anything else. Just like in TK after all. Random artist did 2P or 3P costume for characters that already exist, they didn't create new comers.
Where the hell are you getting this from? There are two pictures, both tiny and she has a completely different weapon. I realize that's just your opinion, but I don't see any basis for it whatsoever.
Also, in the unlikely event that somehow, even with a spear she's like an extra costume for a character with a fencing sword, your statement of "not creating newcomers" still isn't valid, because Scheherezade is a guest artist's creation.
Of course, I don't know any better than you...you could be completely right, I'm just saying that you're really jumping to conclusions without any basis.

quote: ...And that explains it. You're not taking this objectively and simply running off moe. (Although you could argue the inclusion of Star Wars characters was in itself fan appeal). And I hate to say it, but somehow, Mine's design doesn't jive well with the SC series (all other characters are more realistic looking with slightly more defined features. Even Link had that weird nose in SCII in trying to make him "fit").
You're arguing apples and oranges here. True, I like Mine and I don't like Star Wars, but I totally agree that Fia DOESN'T fit. Maybe she fits even worse than the Star Wars characters.
What I'm saying is that she so obviously doesn't fit that it's plainly a joke. She's even related to character from a gag manga. It's ridiculous, but it's supposed to be ridiculous.
The Star Wars characters are ridiculous too, but I don't know if that's intentional or not. I'm saying the more positive response to Fia is because there is no bar anymore. We already know the game is going to be crazy whether we liked it or not. That wasn't the issue when the Star Wars characters were announced.
But that's just in reference to "why is Fia being received positively, but the Star Wars characters weren't."
Personally, I don't think one inclusion is "better" than another, and you're right in saying the Star Wars characters are there for fan appeal. My only bias is that I'm saying "if they're doing fan appeal stuff, I'm glad they're doing something that appeals to me."

I'd like to see a meteor hammer. Or some other lesser-known Chinese martial arts weapon.
Also, on further reflection, Angol Fear (thanks for the correction Rid!) IS using an obscure Chinese Weapon. She's using a sorta mace/spear combination similar to what Sha Wujing used in the Journey to the West.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2c/Xyj-shaseng.jpg
It's an appropriate weapon, as it's one used by mythological chinese celestials (and she's a destroyer of planets from outer space). Also, her dress kinda recalls a Zhong, or ancient Chinese bell (this is more of a gut reaction for me, im not sure if anyone else will agree).
In any case, if you look past the anime face, there's some history going on in that design.
And for the record, i think the more guest characters the merrier. They're not really part of the cannon anyway. I mean, even Necrid was a welcome addition. As stupid looking as he was was, he had this silly Masters of the Universe charm to him. And he wasn't a main character and had zero negative impact on the overall feel of the game.

I mean seriously, this is NAMCO. They've always been one of the silliest game companies in the industry. That's why I love them.
Panda? Black ninja Raven? Bob? Necrid? Link? Heihachi?!?!
They have had Lizardman and Yoshimitsu right from the start of this series. I mean, c'mon, can it really get any more silly than Lizardman?
This is why Namco is awesome. If they want to add weird, funny, fanservice-y guest characters, I'm all for it.
Personally, I wish they would team up with Sega and add some Last Bronx or Fighting Vipers chracters.
I was ccomplaining about how crappy the designs for the Japanese guest characters are, not that there were guest characters in there. I don't mind silly, but I definitely don't think that Namco shoudl go Megamix silly.
Also, I fail to see how Raven being Black makes him a silly character.
Er.....

quote: I didn't know if Raven was supposed to be kind of funny or totally cool...because he's like...too "cool". Suspiciously cool. Like someone with a leather jacket and big black sunglasses. Like you know when Sonic shakes his finger he's supposed to be cool...but...that's not really the case.
I don't see how his ethnicity/nationality is at all what makes him silly. The fact that he's a ninja working for some espionage agency that infiltrates fighting tournaments...that's silly. But his ethnicity/nationality being the cause of his being silly? Doesn't make any sense.
Also, don't say Sonic's finger wag isn't cool...you'll make me cry...
Well, if you don't think a black ninja, or a French ninja or whatever is a little silly and you don't think a Jewish mariachi player is silly or a Chinese cowboy is silly, then that's that. I think Raven is silly because he's too "cool". Being a black ninja doesn't help, but it isn't the cincher.
Still, I'm saying "silly" not "joke character". As Ishmael pointed out, he's certainly less silly than Yoshimitsu.
Back on Soul Calibur, Amy's costume is too tacky, but I know saying "they need to tone it down a little" is wasted on something like Soul Calibur.

Well that's different. You didn't clarify the "he's too cool" part before. You just mentioned that he was a Black ninja. And my confusion on that stems from the fact that, as Ishmael pointed out, non-Japanese ninjas have been popping up all over pop culture for years now.
And they are all kind of silly (including Galford).
There was a Japanese-made cowboy movie (Dwango) where the cowboys were Japanese. That was pretty damn silly too.
I think it's okay to admit that a black ninja is silly as hell, just as it's okay to admit that Afro Samurai is silly as hell. That doesn't mean that both Raven and Afro Samurai aren't awesome though. Silly and awesome aren't mutually exclusive.
Other examples of silly and awesome include most notably, Bob, Yoshimitsu, etc. Even in In SC, you've got Tira and her Hoola Hoop of Death. If that's not both silly and awesome at the same time, I don't know what is.

It's a moon pole. There's even a freaking moon attached to this one!
Did anyone play that Saiyuki SRPG? One of those dudes slung a pretty mean moon pole.
Regarding the overall designs though, decision to include the guest characters, etc...
I think the dev team has kind of lost it honestly. By "it" I mean their solid grasp on the series.
To me, crazy shit like guest characters from Star Wars and mangaka are things that should come WAY THE HELL AFTER you've released a finished game with its own solid identity.
Rather than adding the extras on later, they're kind of lumping everything in together at the beginning and honestly it looks a little sloppy.
Maybe this is a product of not having an arcade version coming out before a home version, or it's clearly separated in the game and it's just crazy out of control marketing, but it just doesn't seem right to me.
I also don't know about what are pretty clearly finishing moves... which feels to me like they're reaching back years and years to grab a "new" idea for the series.
Well, I'll still play it.
