I could have sworn I read somewhere that the Wii will be backward compatible with the Gamecube. Is this still true?

Thought it was timely, especially given that we (the US) has a release date.

As far as I know, it's always been clear that the Wii plays Gamecube games (there's a little opening on the console that allows you to plug up to 4 Gamecube controllers I think).

However, the Wii won't play DVD movies, but frankly, who cares, if you don't have at least 8 devices that can read DVDs in your house by now, you can always buy a cheap player for 30 $ anyway...

I'm really tempted to get one at launch (with either Zelda or Red Steel). $60 ($40 + $20) for the extra complete controller is really expensive IMO though, but I guess it's what makes the console interresting, so probably that's where the expensive components lie...
