Play! recently wrapped up its big debut performance in Chicago this past week. Radd of GamingFM, which is based in the area, posted some favorable impressions about the experience.

What surprises me is the attendance of so many well-known composers. Koji Kondo, Akira Yamaoka, Yuzo Koshiro, and Uematsu to name a few. Kondo and Yamaoka were even asked to perform on stage. Sadly that will probably not happen again on this tour. :(

Still, who knows what they'll do at the other locations. Hitoshi Sakimoto and Yoko Shimamura are supposedly going to attend the Detroit concert, so maybe something will happen. I'd like to go myself, but none of the locations seem to be anywhere near west coast USA. Unless... where IS Vienna anyway?

EDIT: na no da!

I'm thinking Vienna in Austria. But you did say USA so I'm assuming possibly...Vienna in Virgina maybe? Not sure taking a random stab at it. Hopefully I'm wrong and maybe someone else could take help at it.

Well I know that it's an international tour (the Stockholm concert is reportedly sold out), but the tour page on the official website lists the country for Vienna as USA. If it's really in Virginia then I guess that means there's no official west coast visits planned, which makes me a sad panda.

Dude, it's Akira Yamaoka, not Namaoka! I'm soooo jealous... I really hope they're going to release this on DVD once the tour ends, it would be foolish not to do it.

It is in Virginia. Unless there are future concert dates to be announced it looks like Chicago is about as far west as the concert is going to get.

Hmm, I've always felt that the performing arts suffered a bit from being perceived as a stuffed shirt affair but has popular culture shifted to the point that people now routinely show up to symphonies in t-shirts and shorts?

I went to the Stockholm event... it was great. Decent production and the musicians (the Swedish Royal Philharmonic orchestra, no less) actually bothered to learn most of it pretty well. Some amazing scores (Shenmue, Chrono*, World of Warcraft) and some duds (Silent Hill, Chocobo) but overall most worthy of your cash. It's also pretty amazing to see 2500 gaming nerds (half of which you know from online or reputation :/ ) in a royal concert hall, cheering at a huge orchestra of 40-50-something people below a video screen playing video off Zelda 1.

If you get to see it, pay close attention to Rony Barrak if he's there too. I had no idea who he was, but apparently he's a world class percussionist... he does some things with a drum, cymbals and a CLAY POT that you wouldn't believe.

The exclusive songs for the Stockholm concert were from The Chronicles of Riddick (a decent piece, nothing I remember, although I didn't play the game either), from Apidya (a Huelsbeck game you've NEVER heard about, great music though) and a rather decent Uematsu score from Blue Dragon (complete with OH LOOK IT'S GOKU AGAIN footage).
