I had that problem playing Call of Duty for Xbox (and I assume it is the same for the PS2 version) the Stalingrad missions were just too friggin dark on my crappy TV. I couldn't see shit.
I'll refrain from discussing anything about these articles other than to note that they appear on slate.com, a site that is a subsidiary of MSN. You would think that somewhere in the articles they would mention how intertwined this whole discussion is, especially when they have articles opening up with opinions like "The Xbox 360 is the best game console ever designed."

Ok, this is gonna sound stupid...
Doesn't adding some gamma to your TV's settings solve the problem?
I don't have (nor want ) a 360, but this sound extremely stupid.
