Street Fighter 4
Capcom has started production of its famous Street Fighter series, and is hard at work on their 4th game, which will be titled "Street Fighter 4, Battle for the Past".

The game is set to run on Atomiswave hardware made by Sammy, and has high resolution graphics.

It is now in the beta stage, and at the current time has 24 characters (Some new faces, and some returning favorites). At this time we can only confirm one character from the game and it is Guile.

Stay tuned for more information as it develops.

I can't imagine someone from Capcom contacting you personally with a humble message with a ^^ smiley and stuff, that just seems weird. Not to mention the missing picture...

I wish it was true, but the AW seems like a strange choice too, as I said before, be it only for the fact it has 5 buttons.

As usual, let's wait and see...

Wow sounds nice, I could celebrate turning 30 with SF4. Maybe turning 30 would not be so depressing then. Anyways, I think between now and the near future this games should be made. There seems to be more buzz then usual about it.

Even worse, I feel that Darkstalkers/Vampire has an extremely strong following up to this day, yet they have done nothing to bring that series to the next level. I think most of us agree that we would love to see that series on the same level of detail as GGXX or even 3rd Strike.

It really is frustrating at times to be a fan of 2-D fighters... you really start to wonder if it has become a dead genre in recent times.

Also, Capcom may not have the needed staff and talent to make a worthy sequel to SF3.

Wasn´t Capcom of America responsible for the SF series now?? I remember reading somewhere that Capcom of Japan didn´t want to work with another SF games anymore (if this is true, then this "e-mail news" is false, since the person claims to be from Osaka...).

I´d love to see SF4, and I hope someday Capcom decides to make and release it. But unfortunately, this info seems to be fake... (however, that one from an event involving the SF comics sounds much more consistent).

There was a time when I thought that if Capcom ever put out SF4 the game would never live up to the expectations that fans had. Now I'm beginning to think that if SF4 did come out it wouldn't be as entertaining as these false rumors. The burning, blinding desire for a new SF game that drives people to believe and post on the front page of their sites even the most basic of hoaxes is strangely touching.

I don't see MUGEN as that popular anymore... I'd say the popularity peaked around the time Elecbyte was still updating the program and doing Winmugen. Since then most of the really talented character makers quit and pretty much every major fighting game character has been converted.

Maybe you guys haven't tough Mugen recently,
because it's getting popular AGAIN.

Just look at this Jap dude ;>_> :

wall3.hp.infoseek.co.jp

He mugenize all those CvS2 chars by himself,
and they are perfect, even have extra moves. ;>_>
(And he's still adding the chars, people say he will probly mugenize ALL of CvS2 chars eventually. ;>_>)

Not only he, there are many others.

From what I belive, what cause Mugen popular again is because the emulator Pcsx2 can run
2D FTG games now, and there is an tool called artmoney, which can extract
ALL of PS2 games' 2D images and sound without single swear. ;>_>

And do you know what this means?
It means that when NGBC and Tenka come out in PS2, Mugen will have all their chars perfectly in no time. ;>_>

Personally, what I think is killing 2D fighters is a combination of lack of mainstream market interest, rampant bootlegging/piracy, and eletist "competitive players" who drive would-be new players away by acting like total dicks (this is also tied to the first "reason of death", I.E., the lack of interest; people just don't care anymore)

Edit: Of course, this is all just personal opinion, and I have nothing against competitive play; good sportsmanship just seems to be terribly rare indeed. The eletism used to be a problem in the bemani community, too (or so I'm told) but it's allegedly a lot better now.

Edit edit: Things like mugen are a joke and aren't even worth mentioning (although I guess they fall in to the piracy category?)

Well, that statement may discredit Capcom, but it does nothing for Mugen. If Mugen games were as balanced as commercial games, that would be great...but as it is, you get what you pay for.

Mugen is great if you know what to do with it.

Who knows, if someone is willing to create an entire spriteset of a character a good programmer just needs to put them to good use.

There are lots of good characters out there. You'll be surprised at the accuracy of some of the characters made out there.

It's extremely flexible, ain't too hard to code with and you can do many things modern fighting games have, such as high resolution with it.

"Death of 2D fighters?" , posted Fri 23 Sep 14:00post reply

Obviously everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I really don't see that anything has killed 2D fighters. The 2D fighting game experienced an insane burst of popularity in the 90's and has since returned to it's expected level of prominence.

Now I love 2D fighters but lets be honest - they don't really have mass appeal. The learning curve and competitive aspects inherent to fighters don't make them immediately accessible to all gamers. And when you add in the fact that appreciation of 2D artwork is definitely a specific taste you really can't except the 2D fighter to constantly be a top draw.

It seems like people declare the 2D fighter dead because it inevitably fell from the unbelievable heights it ascended to in the 'SF2' era. But the genre isn't dead - it's just settled back into it's reasonable place in market. 2D fighters are still in production and probably will be for some time to come; so just enjoy the games that are released. Just don't expect a return to the heydey of the 90's.

Mugen is a by-product of the stagnant 2D fighter scene, which shows that people still care about the genre. I don't think it is capable of reviving it, though. That has to be done by one of the big companies (Capcom, SNKP, Sammy), but nobody has capitalized yet.

There's much more passion involving 2D shooters that I've seen for this year than there has been with 2D fighters within the past... 4 years. If there is a market for 2d shooters, there's a market just as big for 2d fighters as well. It can be done, IMO.

I am interested in the Fist of the North Star fighter, though... that may be a game that can breath some life into this species of games. Then again, I thought Rumblefish would do the same thing, and look what happened with that.

Edit: I have to slightly disagree, Variable Savior. 3D fighters are just as complex, if not, moreso than the 2D fighters ever were. Yet, the 3D fighters are wildly popular compared to their 2D bretheren. I feel it is due to ease of 3D modeling and motion capture compared to building sprites for 2D, as well as the demand for 3D... that is what I think killed the momentum of 2D fighters in general. It's like how Disney moved away from 2D animation.

MUGEN is as good as you make it... you decide the characters, damage values, stages, music.... and for a while there was brilliant characters like Evil Ken coming out. These days you get Gill with a bunch of chain moves progammed by some guy that's probably never even played SF3.

About PCSX2... it can't emulate The Rumble Fish correctly... and Rumble Fish characters would be the only thing that would really get me back into MUGEN.

"the value of rumors" , posted Fri 23 Sep 17:33post reply

Sorry to interrupt the fascinating mugen discussion, but... didn´t the whole Capcom vs SNK series originate from sheer internet rumors as well? I mean, people began to speculate about it and then Capcom and SNK crew saw there was actually a fanbase who desired such a crossover (at least, that´s what I read in some magazines, I dunno if it´s actually true).

Maybe someone in Capcom is taking good note of all those speculations about a supposed SFIV release and then the executives would make a move... Maybe. Even all this rumors might have been promoted by Capcom itself to see how people would react to a new game in SF franchise, who knows.

Nah, I guess I want to believe, too. Actually, the most likely option is that these rumors are just simple fanboyish babbling. At the end of the day, I would prefer to keep playing good old SFIII rather than taking the risk of an awful sequel.

Oh, yeah, you´re right. The artwork. I forgot about that. Actually, the only thing I would look forward to if a new SF is to be released is the artwork. I´d love to see Capcom designers back to work...

But I´m afraid that, in a supposed SFIV, Shinkiro would manage most of the artwork. Nowadays he seems to be the "official" designer.

However, if I let my imagination go wild, it would be interesting to advance SF´s timeline 20 years in the future, much like Namco did with Tekken 3. How would a 60 year old Ken look like? (I only can imagine him bald and bearded like Jinpachi Mishima ) And Ryu? Would he have sealed off his right arm like his master Oro? And what about Chun Li? A fat version of Matrimelee´s old hag, anyone? One can only wonder...

On the other hand, it would be amusing a sort of Street Fighter -1 thing. I mean, to go back to the times when Gôki and Gôken were still Gôtetsu´s students. I imagine Gôki as a red haired version of Ken, and Gôken as a bearded Ryu. As for the rest of the cast, Mike Haggar could be the subtitute for Zangief, Gen would be a bit younger, we could see Chun Li´s father, Sagat and Adon´s master would be the muai thai fighter, maybe Makoto´s granpa would be in as well... And as final bosses we could have starring Final Fight´s Belger (not in the wheelchair yet) and a satsui no hadô ni mezameta Gôtetsu. Man, it would be worth seeing

Btw, a question from a friend...
What Will Capcom think about those fakes, if they find them?
I mean, peoples won't be stupid enough to make fakes and hoaxes about a game nobody is interested in, right? So If we imagine that Capcom found this SF4 could it ring them a bell, and show us how SF4 would be apreciated...

After this is maybe the reaction those peoples are waiting for...

Better yet, maybe if we make fakes of SF5 vs Sega vs Sammy vs Katamari Damashii vs Kimishine, they'll realise that the market is ready for a ball to roll over the industry and make the game happen!

Or make a fake of mugen running in the arcades. Then they'll realise that 2D fighting games in the arcades is making big money now. ;>_>

And they'll even add blood to all the games too. If we're lucky the vomit from SF2 will make a comeback.

You know...there are guys that hang around groups of friends that nobody likes. They only like having them there to make fun of them. But that person, who is being made fun of, either is too dense to realize it, or is so desperate for attention that they don't care. Which are you?
