I don't want to scare you, but one of my close friends was writing a memoir too, some history mumbo jumbo very hard and specialized... anyway, 8 months in, his hard drive fried and he lost almost everything he had written. You see, he did backups, but only copies on the same hard drive... no CDs, zip disks, whatever... I could hear his "NOOOOOOO!" all the way from here (he lives in Montreal, 220 km away from here...)
So burn some CDs ok! and work harder, cause I think that kick in the nuts wasn't painful enough if you can still post here...

and I tought that only old people could legitimately write "memoirs" (at least in the english sense of the word), and that young people which want to do the same either write a novel which just happens to closely resemble their own life and vivid (sexual) experiences... or they just call it a "memoir" to be pretentious.

I had always thought that that meaning of "memoir" was spelled with an "e" (in French), which is why I was confused.

In the French system, this is how things work:
----a memoir is a 50-100 (sometimes over) page-long essay on a specific topic (Iggy is doing this). We do this to get our "master's degree" (though it is not really equivalent). It is a big dissertation if you prefer.
----a thesis is a 500-1000 page-long essay (I am doing this next yeat, it's like a PhD, and takes a minimum of 3 years to complete).
----memoirs is when an old person writes a retrospective of his life.
