Is there a good time to use the shotgun? At first I thought it might be good for getting out of situations where you're going to get swarmed but you spend so much time fiddling with it -whether it's reloading or pulling it out- that it seems more of a risk to use than anything.

It's only good for those big, hulking zombies that need more revolver bullets to take down. Especially in the later levels, when it takes plugging something like four regular bullets in them.

Thats pretty much the proper use for the shotgun.

Also, most of the time you will be able to one-shot zombies if you hit them in the head while they are rising from the ground.

Is it necessary to headshot them? I've had pretty good luck one-shot killing them just by shooting them before they finish their standing up animation. Then again, I have had some zombies trip and then get back up but I haven't figured out what causes that.

Gah, is it even possible to get a score much past 100?

totally, I'm at 118 so far, and I don't think that's my limit.

shooting them as they get up works well, they always die, no matter where you get them. for the big guys, I find head, crotch, head, always gets them in three. Another hint is that you don't need to conserve ammo. If you're at two bullets and there are no enemies onscreen, fire those off and get a new clip.

Stage 21, 324 kills

I didn't use the shotgun. Just spray the bullets on their feet. The small ones will trip and get back up slowly, and will need only one hit more to kill.
The big ones still need three bullets to kill, but by spraying their feet, you also kill any trying to get up.

Stage 11, 110 kills is all I can manage to squeeze out so far... I usually get swamped around level 8-10 and can't seem to reload fast enough (and I only really use the shotgun as an emergency secondary, and I don't bother reloading during a fight).

EDIT: Stage 12, 137 kills.

It's pretty easy, the priority are the ones that are getting up, then the big ones that are closer. I failed a pair of shots stupidly, and that's why I got caught, but I think I could be there forever.

Stage 16, 214 kills. That's with no feet spraying and healthy amounts of shotgun usage.... I just kept close tabs on my ammo (tactical reloads with the pistol and careful use of the shotgun) and kept the crowd back as best as I could.

Is there a pattern to how the zombies come out of the ground? I seem to do a lot better when I can one-shot them when they pop out of the ground like gophers instead of having a group of them spawn off-screen.

I'm not sure about a pattern... I haven't noticed any so far. Yeah, getting in one-shot kills is so much nicer than having to deal with a whole crowd heading toward you. Oh yeah, that's my tip for using the shotgun: only use it to thin a large group heading toward you... like a backup weapon when your pistol's got no ammo or low ammo and you have three or four right on top of you. Don't reload it in the middle of a level unless there are NO zombies onscreen. Otherwise, reload it only at the very beginning or end of a level.
