"Gametap: Turner's classic game service" , posted Fri 29 Apr 02:34:post reply

Gametap (Thanks to Slashdot Games for the news)

From the splash page and press release, it seems that with a monthly fee, you have access to a legal archive of classic arcade, console, and computer games. 1000 games have been licensed through 17 publishers -- 300 will be available at the start of the service this Fall, with more released weekly. Though, of course, for DRM purposes, you'll only be able to access and play them through Gametap's own program.

Sure, we have yet to see the library, and there are concerns about how well-done the emulation will be. Still though -- it's awesome that we seem to be getting an officially-sanctioned archive of games that's easily accessible.

[It's handled by the Turner Broadcasting System. I can imagine we'll see TV ads for it sometime in the coming months. I'm guessing Adult Swim is a prime candidate.]
