SCEI to install Copy Protection System for PS2 on release of HDD

3/9/01 (Jiji Communications)- Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has announced a verification system for game software regarding their popular home console, Playstation 2. The verification system which utilzes the internet, is intended for use against software piracy and sales of used games. SCEI plans to allow PS2 game software to be copied from its original DVD to the PS2 compatible Hard Drive(HDD), an add-on device scheduled for release in July. This will allow games to run faster from the HDD than its original Disk. The enhanced copy protection is applyed, as copying games to HDD allows for easier piracy and tradings over the internet. SCEI also plans for games to be purchased and downloaded via internet in the future, as well.

It is not clear if SCEI plans this protection for only games which users optionally install into their HDD, or to make the HDD installment mandatory for all games to be played in the future.
