I wonder which version this newly translated English edition is based on? Initially I was excited about having this in English but after hearing less than stellar reviews of the translation choices and the question of what version is being used I'm conflicted. Do I read a questionable translation so I can at least experience something that the original contained? Do I wait for a better translation? Do I get off my ass and learn Chinese? This is a lot of thought for a piece of leisure reading. I'd say that an ill-translated Condor Heroes is way better than no Condor Heroes at all! Back in the day I read the books on a very-far-from- perfect fan translation, and I still had a blast. So I'd say go for it, or perhaps give a try to one of the widely available fan translations out there and see if you can stomach it. Those were based on the 2nd edition, the "good" one. You could also forget about reading book pages and read subtitles instead, with one of the multiple TV adaptations of the novels. They all are as corny, cheesy and cheap as you would expect from classic kung-fu cinema, which makes all of them absolutely delightful, but I would recommend the 2003 version because (ihmo) it has the most accurate cast of all recent versions.
I feel like the 2003 version is a good recommendation and does have the best overall cast of the versions I've seen. But I'll admit that the 2017 version really grew on me. Guo Jing took a while for me to warm up to, and I ended up liking him alright, but I kind of love Li Yitong as Huang Rong. Just a super-charismatic individual. Actually, this and the 2003 versions are both pretty fun. Just hang in there when the "secret room" drama is going on. I wouldn't say the plot drags, but the prolonged tension and strained reasoning makes it feel very soap-operatic for a stretch. Not to mention the dreaded one-tap accupoint sealing that befalls characters at the most inopportune times, rendering them as helpless as a store mannequin. If I were in a Condor Heroes RPG I would definitely put quite a few points into resisting that.
