Bible Gaiden discussion on my MMCafe? Music to my ears!! I regrettably don't know much about gnostic gospels, but for the little I know about the apocryphal ones you'd be surprised to see how much stuff that is widely accepted (and assumed) on nowadays Catholic liturgy and customs is directly taken from there. The traditions of the The Three Kings (aka Three Wise Men), the ox and the mule at the Nativity scene ... All that stuff is actually an heresy, but try to say that to those Catholic families in Spain when they take their X'mas decorations out of the box! Also, I always thought that not including on the canonical gospels at least some of the versions of the early years of Mighty Miracle Kid Jesus that feature on the apocryphal texts was a huge missed opportunity. Just imagine hearing on your Sunday sermon the story of when Kid Jesus killed off one of the kind on the neighborhood just because, using his magical powers, just to raise him from the dead again when scolded by his mother. That actually happened according to those texts! Apocryphal gospels are pure gold, I tell you.
Yeah, it's probably not nice to tell people their favorite (bad) sequel does not exist, but I think that ties back to everyone having access to works they like or dislike, so they can choose. The Temple of Doom and Crystal Skull and Chrono Cross haters are not trying to halt their publication (well, I might for Chrono Cross), they'd just prefer to ignore them. Everyone is happy. But it is a real problem, from Condor Heroes to Star Wars (to the Bible?!?), when versions people like are eliminated by the creators...you lose the whole flexibility of choosing the story or versions you like, the flip side of being able to ignore bad entries or edits you dislike.
Interestingly enough, to the extent of my knowledge I don't think Louis Cha has vetoed or tried to destroy none of the previous editions/versions of his works. The tacit understanding there is that the fans are actually free to choose whatever version they like, although newer versions (including all the changes from the 3rd edition) are obviously more widely available. The fun thing is that Condor Heroes gets remade for Chinese TV as a year long series every three or four years, and none of those versions has ever paid any attention to the 3rd edition changes, afaik. The general consensus is that the true Condor Heroes is the 2nd edition, and only Louis Cha keeps supporting the bullshit personality changes from the 3rd edition. I wonder which version this newly translated English edition is based on?
