The selection of authoritative texts and exclusion/parallel development of mystic texts is a fascinating and political process. (GAME CONNECTION: I first learned about gnosticism and Kabbalah by playing Xenogears as a kid.) Anyway, I like thinking of the apocrypha and gnostic gospels as the Bible Gaiden. This also reminds me of the earlier subject of how ancient texts should be translated today: intelligibly, or with old language as per the source language? Just like the audience for your translated Genji (academic or everyday reader?) will help determine this, the audience for holy texts can determine the translation. The majestic 17th century King James translation of the Bible is beautiful and a delight for people who are interested in the culture and mythical aspects of religion, but for people who are actually using the Bible as a text for study and guidance in church each week, an unadorned modern translation is probably more useful.
I am reminded about how that which exists in the world can't just be ignored. It is a fun thing when talking with people you have just met about "which of the three Indiana Jones movies is the best one" to see who gets the joke, but ultimately with the wider world of strangers I must live in the painful reality of there being four Indiana Jones movies.
Yeah, it's probably not nice to tell people their favorite (bad) sequel does not exist, but I think that ties back to everyone having access to works they like or dislike, so they can choose. The Temple of Doom and Crystal Skull and Chrono Cross haters are not trying to halt their publication (well, I might for Chrono Cross), they'd just prefer to ignore them. Everyone is happy. But it is a real problem, from Condor Heroes to Star Wars (to the Bible?!?), when versions people like are eliminated by the creators...you lose the whole flexibility of choosing the story or versions you like, the flip side of being able to ignore bad entries or edits you dislike.
