Only the things which I say exist exist! Or as the tengu guy in DOA2 once said, REALITY IS MY DELUSION
While this is all well and good for the things we consume on our own as entertainment, it occasionally collides with reality in ways we don't expect are either entertaining or awkward. For instance, when me and my friends talk about how there are only 3 Indiana Jones movies, we all laugh about it, but sometimes you meet a kid who's only experience of Indiana Jones was that nonexistant 4th movie, and denying that person's experience just isn't cool. My parents LOVE the second Indiana Jones movie, and while it has cheesy moments that might not have made the cut in the first or third, it's still an enjoyable experience. While I certainly enjoy playing at being elite and educated genteel folk here in the cafe as a thing we do for fun, there are times when I am reminded about how that which exists in the world can't just be ignored. It is a fun thing when talking with people you have just met about "which of the three Indiana Jones movies is the best one" to see who gets the joke, but ultimately with the wider world of strangers I must live in the painful reality of there being four Indiana Jones movies. It gets weird/strange when we consider the serious/funny implications of institutions which choose to adopt/orphan particular works. Think about how which books were decided to be the ones included in the New Testament of the Bible, and which were left out! Some of them might've been left out for good reasons ("this was obviously written by a fraud", "this is actually too insane to include"), some for more political reasons ("this would undermine the current institution", "this would probably get us executed"), some for whoknowsnwhat reasons ("Frank is a dick and I am voting against him"), etc. And this decision of what to include or exclude as a matter of orthodoxy has tremendous implications! Is there a gnosticism of wuxia? Though to be honest, when do wuxia stories NOT include a part about some lost manual of martial arts techniques that may or may not be forbidden?
