I feel somewhat conflicted given the holiday buying spree I've already been on (FFXV + TLG alone has been $160, and that's not all I've bought!), but the price is actually giving me pause and I feel bad about that, because I did enjoy the original Wild Guns! Has anybody here gotten it yet? Professor, does it live up to your expectations?
After a very intense year-end crunch time I finally picked up the game to wind down and relax and beat easy mode on a single go... ...or so that's what I thought I'd be doing. Boy was I wrong. First off, the game is an awesome remake of the original Wild Guns! If you had fun with it on the SFC, you're certainly going to have fun with this remake. It totally looks 16 bit but there's been some new additions to spice up gameplay. New boss attacks, new items, characters that are totally different in gameplay and control from the two original protagonists, huge money bags, and .. er... 1000 dollar bills! I totally forgot this game is supposed to be in the future. Nice addition. I played the original Wild Guns so much on the SFC that I could easily beat hard mode with no continuing. I was thinking that it'd be a breeze to beat through Reloaded on a single try in easy mode, but oh joy. The possiblity didn't even dawn on me that I'd have troubles beating even the first stage on the first try. Leaving aside some enemies appearing from new points (with newly drawn sprites too, nice), the Lasso doesn't stop mid-boss and bosses like it used to, which jolts the difficulty level far higher than the SFC original. It's certainly a new challenge, even if you practically wore off your thumbprints playing the game in the 90s. The bosses in the original were pretty easy if you knew how to time your Lassos, but in Reloaded they wear out really quickly and they don't even stop the bosses- they just slow them down a little bit. I haven't tried out the new air stage yet, but the halloween stage has some funny enemies and even the melee thugs are drawn anew. Likewise to Gojira I can't say I love the new arranged tracks, but it's mostly the first stage that sounds a bit off. The other stages didn't give me as much issue, but Carson City's track is so memorable that hearing it with even a slightly different tune from the original makes it seem off. All in all, it was certainly worth the 1800jpy. (That said, if it were 3900 jpy/$39 though, I'd hesitate since that's only a thousand yen or so from Persona 5 and other fully-featured titles.)
