"More about Mortal Kombat: Deception (SPOILER)" , posted Sat 11 Sep 07:38post reply

Again, this may be old news to people who like MK, but it's looking so good I couldn't resist posting some more info here...
MK: Deception has currently 24 characters, being 12 regular and 12 hidden characters. However, it seems that Ed Boon also announced some more characters, the "super unlockables". They may not have a story or endings, but there will be more than 24. People are trying to guess who will they be. Some possibilities: Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, Sonya Blade, Kitana, Cyrax, Reptile, Sektor, Sareena... Of course not all of these people will be the super unlockables, it's just a guess.
Anyway, so far, the returning characters from previous MK games are: Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden (who looks quite different), Li Mei (looks much better than in DA), Bo' Rai Cho, Kenshi, Baraka, Mileena, Nightwolf, Kabal, Ermac, Sindel, Jade, Tanya (also looking much better) and two slots that I'll put as spoilers.
The new characters so far are: Ashrah (former Quan Chi's servant, she's trying to purify herself by killing demons with a mystical weapon, so that she can run away from Netherrealm), Hotaru (a hero from Orderrealm, he's not evil but he's helping the Dragon King because he'll bring order to the realms once he conquers them), Kobra (a new Black Dragon member, he looks like a fusion between Johnny Cage and Sonya), Kira (other Black Dragon newcomer, also looks like Sonya), Dairou (a samurai, not much was revealed about him yet), Darrius (a guy from Chaosrealm, he's Hotaru's enemy), Havik (Darrius's partner, it seems) and an old man named Shujinko (he's the hero in Konquest mode, where you control him since his youth until his current age; plus, he seems to have the key to destroy the Dragon King; could this be the first time an old man is the main character from a MK game??).
Also, the intro video was partially revealed, and it may be shocking:

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
OK, remember how in DA, Liu Kang was killed? The same thing happens now, except that this time, almost ALL the heroes die: Johnny Cage, Kitana, Sonya, Jax, Kung Lao... at least Kitana is confirmed as dead by the Deadly Alliance. Raiden challenges them and beats them until Shang attacks him with a fire snake, defeating Raiden. Shang and quan then decide to break the alliance and fight each other, with Quan winning.
But then, someone appears: Onaga, the Dragon King!! Some tarkatans (Baraka's race) are with him. Desperate, Quan, Shang and Raiden join forces to destroy him, but their attacks don't even harm him. Raiden then uses something called "ethereal blast", vaporizing everything (maybe even himself and the Deadly Alliance) to destroy Onaga... but the Dragon King still stands!!
Shujinko, who's the narrator so far, then reveals that Onaga deceived him and now he's back to life. Shujinko then decides to find the Dragon King and destroy him in a final battle. (also, it's revealed that Kitana is revived as one of Onaga's bodyguards; it's uncertain what happened with the other heroes)

End of Spoiler

Also, Onaga is revealed as the final boss (obvious!). However, two other surprises await us:

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
1) One of the returning characters is no other than... LIU KANG!!! Could Earthrealm's main hero be now on Onaga's side? How could he come back to life??
2) Breaking the MK tradition of having a huge monster as a sub-boss, now this task belongs to a tag-team of Noob Saibot and Smoke (it's still uncertain how Smoke joined Noob). Nevertheless, they are reported to be as deadly as Goro, Kintaro or Moloch!

End of Spoiler

Well, this looks very promising! I wonder if it will be as good as Ed Boon is leading us to believe it will be...

Wow, this game does sound to be more interesting. I used to me a huge MK fan, from MK1 to UMK3. MK4 was a major letdown for me (and many others). I don't own, but have played, MK:DA and it was more fun than MK4, but still didn't feel like they had regained the great touch from MK2 (I believe the best in the series).

However, this post along w/ the "Icons" special on Mortal Kombat (on G4TechTV) and the other previews I've seen make this game sound really interesting and fun. All the special modes (conquest, chess, etc.) look to add some extra value as well.

I know MK gets knocked for shallow gameplay and gimmicks, but nostalga <sp?> might win out for me on this one. Thanks!

I'm looking forward to this game... I just hope the extras aren't as hard to unlock as they were in DA (the idea of mini-game exclusive coins was retarded)

the idea of "super unlockable" characters is interesting... maybe this is to shut up MK fanboys who always claim you can find a missing character hidden in a game? It'd be nice if it was something like Tobal 2... you how in Quest Mode you could unlock the monsters and stuff, I mean we know every MK character is in Quest Mode, and if Shujinko can learn all of their moves (which it sounds like he might be able to... or is just the playable 24 he can learn from?) all they'd need to do is plop down the missing MK:DA characters and assign each one not from MK:DA a fighting style used by one of the exisiting characters (or maybe two and weapon if they want to go the extra mile)... I'm not getting my hopes up as far as "super unlockables" go, since it's probably just Dhramin or someone I don't like, but the possiblities of what could be done are neat.

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
I like the idea of Noob Smoke... Noob was supposed to be MK4's mid-boss but I guess he got dropped, and then replaced by Reiko in the storyline... poor Noob, it is interesting "Noob Smoke" elminates the name "Saibot"... I wonder if that's Boon trying to eliminate his partner's legacy from the series...

End of Spoiler

About the mid-boss:

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
No, it seems Noob still carries the name Noob Saibot, Noob-Smoke is just the name that appears in the screen, but his bio shows his name as Noob Saibot. I don't think it has anything to do with Tobias, since his arguments were against Midway, not against Boon. It seems they are still friends or something.

The first part of your second spoiler was revealed a while back in a (Game Informer?) feature on MK:Deception.

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
Except that article mentioned there would be actually be two Liu Kangs. His reanimated corpse as one character, and his ghost as a second separate character.

End of Spoiler

Don't know if they've thought of better since then though.

Someone just made me notice MK Deception wasn't the funny title I thought it was.
Actually, in french, "deception" means "disapointment".
This was funny at so many degrees I thought the title would collapse on itself at some point and engulf the game and all Midway with it in a black hole of shitty self-derision.

Now I'm just bitter and loveless.

My dictionnary says "tromperie, duperie, fraude, supercherie".
And I don't feel like looking for a more precise definition, but the idea of "tromperie" for a game is still fun. "MK Cheatery"...
If you feel cheated when you buy a MK game, you either are an idiot or bought a good game made by mistake. But you are a not very bright person either way.

Decepcion = deception or disapointment.
Deception = Decepcion
Disapointment = Decepcion

So basically, deception in English has only one meaning. In Spanish it has two. The Decepcion is a funny word because of its dual meaning. When you say "me decepcionaste" it means you fooled me, you disappointment me. In this regard, both meanings are probably true because if you say, "you disapponted me, I thought you would do good on the math test" you can mean, "you fooled me into thinking you were smart" and "you disappointed me by failing the math test." This only works in Spanish of course.

Okay, enough of that. It is a very clever word. Spanish is full of these 'clever' dual meaning words. Can anyone think of any others? I'm gonna email my brother who is high school spanish teacher about this. Now i'm all interested in the language- bah!

Actually, "Deception" in spanish is "Engaņo". It's a literal translation.

So it's not that funny.

Well, I tried to make that joke (LOL MK deception! what a dissapointment! LOL) and my friends were "no, look in a dictinory, it means deception" and I was like, damn, and now I am tired and can't barely type or make sense, for some reason.

Well, that's a classic. It's what, at least in my English classes, was called a "False Friend": an English word that's very similiar to another in Spanish or Catalan (in my case), but that doesn't mean the same. And many times I've almost written (and probably finally written it more than once) "deception" to mean "disappointment".

It's what happens always with "actually". In many cases, even sometimes professional translators, when they see one of those automatically translate it to "actualmente" (the apparent literal translation for "actually"). But "actualmente" in Spanish doesn't mean "in fact", or "the truth is", it means "nowadays", so the phrase ends up not having much sense or sounding stupid.
The same with "actual". The phrase "the actual <thing> is" would probably be translated as "the recent <thing> is", "the present <thing> is" or similar.

Oboromaru. Yup seems they're all "one-eyed" masked guys now. Just coincidence.

Same in french...
It's really easy to make such error with english it seems. It can be funny sometimes, for exemple a gift in english is an other word for present, but in German gift, means poison...

Something I forgot to tell:

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
As I said, it seems that the Dragon King has revived Kitana (and if what I read at the Mortal Kombat Online forum, the other fallen Earthrealm warriors may have been revived as bodyguards as well); however, she is NOT confirmed to be playable so far. There's a chance that it will only be something to be used in Sindel's or Jade's ending. Even though I'd really like to see Sonya and Kitana in this game...

Bah. People dying in Mortal Kombat has no meaning. Scorpion has died in every game so far.

It's just ridiculous because they'll bring everyone back in MK7 anyway.

Oh, and a WORLD EXCLUSIVE REVIEW giving a game a perfect score hardly means anything.

So has Charlie... they must have really good agents

that's not how MK games work... MK games work on the concept of pleasing some fanboys while pissing off others.

If they brought everyone back... who would fanboys say Baraka turned into on the 3rd round if you were at the Haunt Crypt and fighting topless Sonya after you got a perfect victory againist Hornbuckle (assuming of course you to find and defeat the elusive "Memory Card 1 Error" who is Hornbuckle's sub-boss accoridng to 3|_|_|+|\|||\|j@ at GameFAQ's).... NOT Johnny Cage that's for sure! Since he's on the select screen right next to Kai and below Ermac

an MK game can NEVER bring back every character... for the same reason Tekken will never bring back all it's characters out side of a 'triology/tag tournament' game: it would make people happy, and what's the fun in that?!

quote:
Oh, and a WORLD EXCLUSIVE REVIEW giving a game a perfect score hardly means anything.

It means EVERYTHING if you're Midway... it means the extra thousands of dollars you dropped into advertising in that magazine paid off big time!
