I never owned any of these Battle Beast things, but that commercial with its retarded, logic-free version of rock-paper-scissors has stuck with me for ages and just won't leave. I still remember the voices from it. So for kicks I decided to look it up.
Turns out there was more to this toy series than I originally thought.
I was kind of shocked really. I guess there was a time when every toy out of Japan had a link in some way or another to that line. It just feels kind of strange linking what I had always considered the worst toy idea of the 80s to the best one.

Wow!! This takes me back. And excellent choice of thread titles - I always end up saying 'Wood beats water!!' to my friend when discussing toys we had as kids.
But I wouldn't say that Battle Beasts were the worst toy from the 80's. I'm not saying they were good (the symbol thing was stupid; particularly when they added the all powerful sun burst symbol) but worst?? I'd definitely rank both Army Ants and the Immortals of Change beneath BB's. Now there were some crappy toys...

I used to love my Battle Beasts, but I don't think I ever saw the commercial. They were all extremely well crafted and durable (except for the weapons, which all got lost immediately). My favorite was a badass white alligator with green armor. I remember another one that was a mouse with a shovel for a hand for some reason. Ah, nostalgia...

I have that alligator. I still have the bag of them upstairs somewhere. I never got the poster that actually told me what their names were, though.
My favorite one was a cobra that had pink light red armor and two little claw-like fingers to hold his weapon. Appropriately, both his arms broke off.
There was a bandolier one could get that you could attach Beasts to, like your own underaged Bat-utility belt.
It was kind of funny, I thought I was all smart and stuff because I knew that they changed the rub symbol designs between the first release and the second set of Beasts (one had the Transformers-like multi-colored symbol, one had "regular" colored symbols).
