I was playing Project Justice last night with a friend, and sometime into the 14th match the game started glitching up - polygons blinking in and out of existance, graphics just gone haywire in general. It's doing the same thing with other games as well (KOF'Evo is totally unplayable, blazing away at like 5 fps). Has anyone else had this problem? Know of a way to fix it? My friends says that the laser isn't getting enough power, but I don't want to jump right in and start messing things up. DC docs anyone?

Well truthfully, it might be cheaper to just go buy another Dreamcast at a game shop or something than searching for any parts to fix it up.

Poor Dreamcast...you are too gentle for this world.
Whereas PS systems seem to mess up surprisingly early and clutch onto life irritatingly for ages, DCs seem to die sudden, unexplained deaths. I've seen it happen many times.

Nice quote.

Question : do you turn the DC on and off when u switch games or do u simply pop up the lid. The rapid turning the dc on and off when u switch games ruins it. It says so in the manual many people didnt not bother to read this.
DUMB.

Ah! Really? Who reads the manuals!? That's a funny weakness for a system to have. I wonder if this applies to other systems, too?

I thought that was what the controller reset of "push all the buttons" was for ?

Well, here is a fun fact... if you open up the DC you'll notice that its almost like a custom Naomi ;P... It's a fact that you can replace brocken parts of the DC with Naomi parts, or better yet, with crappy PC parts XD

So, if the problem is on the power source or any psychal part of the DC it could be easily solved by someone knowledgeable.

shindekudasai - I don't remember the URL, but if you go to Sega's official Dreamcast site, they'll tell you how to get your system fixed. Unless the problems really simple, however, most likely they'll just send you a new system (that's exactly what happened to me).

I wouldn't give up my Dreamcast for anything, but yeah, it's baffling how Sega just can't seem to make a system that's powerful AND reliable. I expected problems with the X-Box, the first ever system created by a company that just got into the console gaming market, but Sega really should've done better.

i know, dude. i turned on my PS2 the other day and a small factory twelve miles south of São Paulo exploded, maiming several disoriented children. and just last night, i tried switching memory cards when the system caught fire, and with a booming voice it gave me an updated version of the Bible that i was too lazy to write down

wait no. THAT NEVER HAPPENED because my PS2 fuckin rocks. i don't know what kama sutra positions you guys are testing with your systems to make them that self-loathing and suicidal, but despite a few DVD troubles (which was expected since the PS2 can't handle them too well) i've never had a damn problem with the system. and this is coming from someone that bought it on release, spent entire nights using it to play DVDs, and has played it nonstop, for hours (8-12) at a time, without taking any breaks. at this rate, i predict that i'll have to replace my PS2 late October of 2039

however, i am fearful for my friend's Dreamcast since the DC another friend passed away recently, and he treated that thing better than most people would their own lover, or offspring for that matter

EDIT:
by the by, my friend's owned his PSX longer than i've even known him, and he's never had a problem with that. who knew that if you took care of your systems, they tend not to break! alright, i'm kidding. but seriously what the hell are we doing differently than everyone else that's making our systems hang around this much longer? i'm guessing our Sony systems just love to rock out

Let me deprave you. Be a martyr for my lust.

The only PS I've had mess up was my Japanese one which was like...the first of the first. I did a lot of swap tricking on it to play American games, so it wouldn't surprise me if that messed it up.

However, a lot of friends of mine have had problems with their PS and PS2s. I know some of them are from modding, though. Well...actually, let me rephrase that, because I don't believe the trash that "modding your system makes it die!". Recording games onto cheap CDs and DVDs wears out your lens faster, so that might contribute to some PS/2 problems. I don't have to worry about that, though...and my PS2 , for the most part, is quite reliable.

Dreamcasts seem to die suddenly after a certain point, and that point seems to be now. When I decided I wanted to play 3rd Strike on DC a few months ago, my system, my friend's system and her boyfriend's system all died within a period of a few weeks.

But I'm sure different people have different views on this that may be more valid than mine.

My Dreamcast is fine and my PS2 can't tell when I have a disc in the tray.

My PS2 works great, but I know a few people that have gotten the (fixable) disc read error. At least one of them got it from leaving it on too long (not just switched on from the back so the red light is on, but actually leaving games running for days on end).

I've had two Dreamcasts break on me, though. The first one I can't blame Sega for. Someone must have bumped the power cord's connection in the back, because the circuit board was actually snapped in the back right at that connection so it couldn't get any power.

My second DC mysteriously stopped playing sound all of a sudden. I opened it up and couldn't see anything wrong with the cicuit board, so I took it out and used it to replace the broken one in my old DC (I thank the lord I didn't throw it out); problem solved.

But anecdotes aside, I would have to say that both systems are reasonably reliable. Remember the days of the NES? I would wager that a sizable portion of my childhood was taken up by trying to get those cartridges to work.

OK, one more anecdote to go out on: I also know someone whose N64 basically melted from overuse during its first week. Shag carpet and vents on the bottom of the console are not a good combination.
