Well, there are two things worth noticing here.

1.- Pachinko market hits sudamerica -> I have seen several japanese business men and women selling here panchinko and pachin slot machines; they sell them off real cheaply and offer manteinance for the machines (most likely they are all old second hand machines that no longer made profit on japan). Now you can find them everywhere; arcades, stores, bazars, a.n.y.w.h.e.r.e.

2.- Mame hits the arcades -> That's right; even tough the issue was not the responsability of the m.a.m.e. team now there is an arcade version of mame; you got the load button and the games load in arcade with no free play. This is bad; because you got most 'block buster' AND 'recconto' games here and they are loaded with the configuration that the arcade saw fit -> in most cases crappy or insane difficulty and ALWAYS stupid button layout.... When they both the machine you can see that it's a PC and the emulator isn't called mame, it's called puka or something like that.... I haven't calculated but it seems that they can load up to 1.5 gigas of Roms (split into something like 300 games or more)... I have already seen two of these nefastous machines.

I haven't seen them myself, but I've heard of arcades in the US with mame cabinets inside. Pretty lame if you ask me.

Well, I personally take the bother to salvage these machines and break them, it's not only fun and helps the companies, it also brings back memories from the old days ;P

There are also machines with PS2 hardware and the load a CD, with no memory card, so if the game had secret characters that was bad for you.

Also you can't truly play on these craps, lets say that you gang up wih your friends and want to play VS on a game, then you arrive and there is already a mob playing other game, you lose.

Also, said Mame machines had several bugs and fails, and it's a PC actually (I have seen it loading DOS when they starting up the thing); so most likely that machine will over heat and have all of those stupid bill gates product problems XD

They are also here in Mexico, both doing quite well, but the pachinko ones are apparently against the law here or something.

The MAME machines I have seen lately are probably manufactured by the same group, and look very good. Too bad this will only end up killing what little is left of the arcades.

Heh, this reminds me that I recently bought the Pelican 'Real Arcade' stick... which as they claim feels like it really came from an arcade. Very nostaligic, but the irony is I wonder if most people will even know or care. Probably not a lot of them in the US.

i was aware of that stick, but wary of an american stick, and i didn't really want a non-ball-top, so didn't really look into it.

Here in Granada are three of them, two in the same arcade. Tons of CPS2 and NEO-GEO games, with, as Toxico said, horrible button configurations.

The sad thing is that those are now the most interesting arcade machines here... The rest are years old driving and shooting arcades.

And yes, of course the're illegal.

Well that's too sad! More or less that's what is happening in every arcade location out there...

But hey! This happened to me some weeks ago:

I was in a small vilage in Navarra, visiting a friend and his family. They run a small shop with you know, candy, ice cream and those kind of things. They also have some arcades and computers with internet access. When I was heading to the shop, I asked my friend what arcades they had there. He told me "Bubble bobble", "Super Pang" and "Metal Slug". He's not into videogames, so I was thinking that it was Puzzle Bobble and not Bubble Bobble, and wondered what Metal Slug it could be...

In the end, it was Bubble Bobble Memories, Mighty Pang (It was the first time I saw those 2 ) and Metal Slug X. There were 6 computers with internet access, my friend told me that almost nobody played with them.

We were about to open the shop and the kids were already waiting in front of the door and shouting!

It was a really great thing watching kids playing 2D games, they were good players too! I decided to play Metal Slug X. When I reached the 2nd mission, some kids surrounded me and asked: Hey do you know "tricks"? I answered shooting a hot-spot and obtaining some diamonds. "Like these?" I answered. The truth is I played Metal Slug 2 the most, so I don't know every hot-spot in X, but that's nothing that trial and error can't solve. Anyways, the kids were just pointing out to me where all the hot-spots were, even when I picked up a new weapon, they told me what was it, like "You picked up fire!". I even could teach them some hidden stuff they didn't know. It was really entertaining.

It was great to see that even girls played those games. There was a girl of about 12 playing Metal Slug X, who was better than me!

Isn't it beautiful to see kids growing with old-school 2D games?

But then again, the kids "betrayed" all this by playing GTA in one of the computers XD. They were just driving around and punching people. They surprised me when one of them shouted "Get out of the car! There's a bitch out there!". It was fun XD.

Isn't it even more beautiful to see kids growing with old-school 2D games and modern 3D games, and watching how they prefer 2D games?

Haha, Great story! Usually the aracdes remainings in small towns and villages are the best ones. I've never seen Third Strike in an arcade, but a frind of mine saw one in a lost village in the middle of nowhere!

Just imagine: having to play Third Strike with only two working buttons.

Well, if you give me and I'll pick Chunli and be ready to kick ass ^^.

But seriously, that's a shame. Since I've accostumed myself to play it in console, finding it with less than 8 buttons woud be quite annoying. Anyway, I've always played SF2 with only 3 buttons in the arcades (, and ), so i wouldn't be surprised.

Well, as long as he can taunt he will be OK, at least he could hurt you psychologicaly...

The other day I got to play SS0 with odd button layout (upper buttons a, b, c, buttons beneath, d, start), and the stick couldn't do anything (you couldn't even run, much less make a SP move).

Now, let us convert this on yet another french men spamming thread...

Probably off-topic, but...how good is that joystick? Is it compatible with the Gamecube?

With the release of Midway Arcade Treasures 2, I been thinking about getting a stick for the GC.

Yep, it works with the gamecube as well, though it doesn't work with Smash Bros since that needs the second stick.

I'm the kind of person who really abuses a stick when he's playing, yanking the stick, smashing the buttons, etc, and it still feels like I just bought it. Works very well with the various 2d and 3d fighters I've tried. Also even works with games that use a single stick like Dynasy Warriors 3. It's all around a quality product.

Though make sure you get the Pelican Unverisal Real Arcade stick. They also have some other crappy stick called the twister or something like that. The real arcade is hard to miss since its this huge black monster and comes in a big yellow box.

Iggy is not hard to stir psychologically. Wearing a yellow T-shirt will cause a vexation. Burping or farting in his presence will make him downcast. Not wearing a T-shirt will send him shivering. Playing KOF EX2 with him while sitting on his lap would freeze him on the spot.

Well long time ago when they were arcades near me (5 years) in one we have KOF99, and there were so much newbies or peoples who never have played a SNK game that each time me or my friend pull out a DM every one were screaming like crazy....
LOOK! LOOK! he made one of those super hidden attacks!!

Iggy next time you didn't want to see Kikkokn using those cheap tricks (yes they are cheap!) just put a bandana on your eyes so you won't see him anymore....and then you'll be able to play ....normaly....
