It took long enough but WotS2 finally came out in the US. Why Capcom decided to produce the sequel to such a weird little niche game is beyond me but I'm glad they did. So far I'm loving WotS2's idle pace [punctuated by occasional times when you have to litter the streets with bodies] how much bigger it is and it's open ended plot. So far my favorite plot involves the role where you help the people -the "hero" story of the game- and you end up spending most of your time hanging out with geisha in the red light district. By the end of the game not only was I a hero to everyone in town, all the courtesans knew me by name and loved me. That plot was so fun I'm going to have to force myself to play through the other scenerios.

In addition to all the other improvments [better swords, better combat system and so on] I like that WotS2 has gotten goofier than the original. You can spend a large amount of time doing nothing more than chatting with people on the street. It's like Shenmue except if they have a sword you want for your collection you can hack them to death and steal it off their corpse. You can also get items for your samurai to wear. Currently my samurai has a parrot on his shoulder for no other reason than he can. I suspect silly stuff like this was mandated by Capcom ["After the success of Onimusha 2 we've decided that all samurai games need to feature tropical birds"] but I have no evidence to support this. I need to get the pet monkey accessory next. Monkeys are so cool.

I'm rambling here but I'm enjoying this game a great deal and am hoping it's a success so the series can continue. Has anybody else tried this game?

Hmm, I hadn't heard many people bring up so many positive points from the game.

BTW, isn't that avatar the baby from that 'Dinosaurs' sitcom? Not the mama? I'm the baby? Totally Hidden Predator?

I have to admit to watching that show several times in its initial run, not sure exactly when that was...

No, but after reading this, I'm highly interested in it.
Who developed the game? was Capcom, or they just publish it?

By the way, do I have to play the first one in order to enjoy this sequel? or is it self contained?

Both IGN and Gamespot were pretty tough on the game. I don't know why, I guess they didn't like WotS. Since I liked the first one, I feel just as good about the second. The map's a little confusing at first, often I would forget just exactly where everything is unless it was labelled specifically like "Aoto gang HQ", but you get used to it. I like the fact you can walk into lots of different shops now, and have the option to steal something instead of buying it (though you can't use shops anymore if you do that). The conversations are a little goofy in translation but fun nonetheless. Sometimes they give you that silly extra option like "HOW BIG IS YOUR BUTT".

One thing I will complain about, the voices are a tad... dull. Okay, understatement. The magestrate bodyguard sounds like he's falling asleep no matter what time of day it is. The yellow-vested foreigner guy never fails to amuse, though. For extra fun try scaring him off and watch him flail his arms about.

Overall it's fun, and there's a lot of in-references for fans of the original. Kotsubo... LOL

It is fully self-contained. The first one takes place at the end of the samurai era, while this one is quite a bit before that. They aren't related, but there are a few character references thrown in for the fans.

Well, it is one of the sloppiest games I've played in a while, so I can understand why what was said.....was said. But what I don't understand, is yes, it is a [sorta] crappy game, but why the hell is it so addicting? I must've spent nearly all of yesterday playing it even if I was cursing at all the times I got repeatly knocked into a shop before I could draw my sword or run away.

I'm pretty sure it isn't.

[Edit: Link doesn't work]

Although I can offer no guesses about what it is...

Is it me, or does Ishmael's avatar look like some sort of dinosaur version of the G-Man from Half-Life 2? Same copper-ish eyes, same lips, same half-open mouth...

Also, for anyone that doesn't already have Way of the Samurai 2, you might want to try the free WOTS2 EGM sweepstakes.

Spike did it. (official site)
Hmmmm, it DOES look interesting... Now, let's see, shall I buy it or wait Kengô 3 in a few month...

Edit : Hum, maybe I'll wait Kengô 3 to get some masurao love.
(this is not a samurai simulation, it's a chinpira simulation ! aha!)

I want to actually be able to fool around with geisha... and not just for health regaining purposes! They had better put that into WotS 3.

I'll add this game to my get it if I find it really cheap list, anyway.

Hmm, that picture of a puppet of Godzilla's first heir Minya was funny when I first saw it but now it's starting to creep me out. I need to look into changing my avatar again.
