"PS2 Berserk" , posted Wed 23 Jun 02:08:post reply

So far, the PS2 game of Berserk seems to be a simple retelling of the manga from the end of the Danzaihen. shots of Nurupiko making a fire, trolls fleeing before a huge stream of water in a village, Nuruneze trying to catch Nuruska falling in the stream from the top of the church, etc etc. I'm not convinced by the voice actors ; while Nuruffith and others sound exactly how I would have wanted them to, Nurudoro and Guts are weird. I don't like Guts' voice at all, too young, too nekketsu, to much teen angst and not enough heavy testosterone for me. But maybe its goes better in the game.

Not a spoiler-filled original story like the DC game is a huge letdown for me... And what are they going to do, make Gururun the the final boss, and the Skully armor the "bonus you get at the end of the game and you can unlock it to play the whole game with it if you get a good score" ? Will it be only the troll arc, and if then won't it be too short ? Will they continue to that Makara thing, or even after it ? Or maybe there will be some original story during the 7 days between the destruction of Flora's house and the scene on the beach... Will we see Ganishka, Locus and Irvine ? Lots of question, not enough answers unfortunately.

And we shall never talk about Vampire Panic no more. pouah, pouah, filthy Vampire Panic, no more.

That does seem like a strange part of the manga to make a game around. I just hope you're right about being able to use the Berserker armor at some point.

Do you happen to know if this one is being developed by the same team as the DC game? Also, any news on a release date?

I thought both were developed by Yuke's... well I enjoyed the DC game so I'll likely pick up the PS2 one, especially if there's a US port.

Which was Yuke's. Credited as ASCII/Yukes.

Here's an informative link. Look under main customers.

Thanks for the link. I don't follow Berserk closely enough to know whether I should be happy or sad that the game features part of a particular storyline but it looks like the game is going to let you beat the bloody crap out of your enemies so I'm happy.

What's wrong with Vampire Panic, besides the silly name?

Looks like a lot there are a lot of exact matching frames with the manga in the cutscenes. Apparently the other characters figure in somehow, maybe as helpers... looks like you might be able to directly control Serpico?

They need to incorporate some system for brutally maiming bosses in specific ways though, that Ogre needs his arm and the top of his head chopped off at some point.

I'd say it's looking good so far. Just knowing that you can slice trolls to pieces with a single swing (at least in the TGS demo) is enough for me.

Check gametrailers.com for a couple of movies, including a pretty long gameplay one.

Some of those finishing moves are sa-weet!

I'd hate to think that these movies had been available for a while and Iggy (who commented on the character voices) neglected to bring them to our attention.

Yes, I would really hate to think that.

Edit: So having watched the movies... Gut's voice does get way too high for my liking.

The gameplay looks really cool though, but I wonder if they took out the huge pole-vault slash from the TGS demo (I think it's from volume 18)?

And hell, just about every blow from that sword is a finishing move but I know what you mean... man, I just hope you can bust out those things on bosses (at certain points, perhaps). I'm coming for you, OGLE!

The game looks like it has great potential, but all the vid was was slash slash slash... ugh, I'd hate to have to do that for ten hours straight, or even five, especially if you're stuck in the same spoke like that most of the time. Though this point I'll just assume the player sucked and wasn't really using the game to its full potential. Still think it would be better if it were a little faster paced. Seems slower than the DC game to me.

Actually, when I found the movie on a japanese uploader, I was on the phone with a friend. When I saw it, I told him the address so he could download it, but in the few minutes inbetween, the movie already disappeared. So I didn't see the point to link to an uploader where there was already no more movie.

Unfortunately, I have the feeling it will indeed be five hours of slash slash slash and summon. Ugh... I really can't share the enthusiasm of most Berserk fans.

But wait, how did you feel about the first Berserk game? Worth it for the original story by Miura but not for the gameplay?

[Edit: I think this video was a 'defend this area' mission, and that the restricted area and camera perspective reflect that. Doesn't look any slower than the DC game to me... I think it's just the viewpoint...]

Anyway, aside from being a Berserk fan I'm a huge fan of cleaving things into bloody pieces. Hell, I like beat 'em ups in general. While I believe I have discerning tastes in interactive entertainment, I try to enjoy things for what they are.

The characters and story are really of secondary importance in an action game. Maybe an action game can never do Berserk justice, but I can still enjoy swinging Gut's gigantic sword for a while.

But just out of curiosity, Iggy, what would the ideal Berserk game be like for you? And for anyone else?

If they were to make a Berserk game where the player could actively influence the story, conversation, and interact with other characters in meaningful ways they'd have to tie Miura to the project for years... would be interesting to see though.

Worth by the spoilers in it, the way it spoiled some heavy details ahead in the manga but in an interesting way.
The game in itself was... well, good but forgettable. I think.

Overall, I enjoyed the DC one, but I thought the boss fights and the Shunmue like sequences were lame.

I know why it seems slower to me now. Guts never went into rage mode which speeds up his sword swinging and also helped break up the game a bit from being too repetitive. I hope that's still in this game someplace.

I'd say it was a good rent.
Actually, a friend of mine rented a DC just for this game, but since he finished it in like 3 hours, I got to play and finish it myself.
Nothing too incredible, but a cool game overall!
As for the story, even though I was following the manga (not just the anime), the spoilers did not bother me too much, actually, it got me hungrier for more of the manga!
