I've been messing around with a one-level demo of this game (by Akklaim, believe it or not), kind of a beat-'em-up/shooter hybrid similar to Cannon Spike.

It's based on an independent comic, and damn is it badass. I don't have time now to give you in-depth impressions, but GameSpot and 1up have decent pieces on it now and it should be on a near-future episode of X-Play. I really recommend that you guys check it out, it's definitely the type of game I'd expect a lot of the people on this board to enjoy.

acclaim offered us a preview build of the game - I said sure, but we're very honest, and very truthful in our reviews - we will pull no punches.

I didn't hear back after that. hmmmm.

But thats why we love you.

BTW, I'm excited about this. Red Star is a good comic book. Well, it has great art and super fantastic yabba dabba awesome ideas. The writing is so-so. The plot is sluggish and muddy. So my point? There are a lot of awesome ideas in this book and its great that a great game is coming from it.

Hey wasn't I complaining about licensed games in another thread? Yes I was!

Maybe they read a few of your reviews and got shy...

In my experience if you want people to turn over betas to you on a regular basis, you should not give the impression that you're ready to rip their incomplete code a new asshole. Lucky of you guys to score the KOF:MI demo, nice impressions on that btw.

Anyway, this point the current version is only one level with two out of three playable characters. Believe me though, the one level is quite promising. Or not. I mean, you can believe me or not. In my expert opinion, it is actually quite good.

I'd rather have you guys stay honest even if it means getting 'punished' by the game publishers. Its just how the industry works. Besides, being a game review sell-out in this industry is way to easy. And in the long run, you don't win because the big publications already have the sweetheart connections to the publishers. The only way to really make it is by staying legit. I think you guys already follow that creed, I just wanted to state what I feel.

Of course, you also have to be reasonable and fair in your reviews but thats another story...

yeah, well that's a big part of the reason I don't ask for preview builds in general - I don't want to have to deal with the results. But I've learned that some companies are very personable, and you can deal with them well even if you give their products the occasional bad review (my galerians ash review, for example).

Basically what I told them was that we are fair, as much as we can determine fairness. We shall see.

Taking an unfinished product and ripping it apart is going to tarnish one's journalistic integrity as much as giving out easy grades in reviews. It doesn't actually benefit anybody, and it demonstrates a profound ignorance of the development process.

It sounds to me like Akklaim is assuming that's what you were going to do. I'd think you guys would be more professional than that, so it's probably just miscommunication. It's a shame though, it's the type of game that's right up IC's alley.

Acclaim is putting out a good game for a change? I probably would have passed on it thanks to the publisher but if you say it's a fun beat 'em up I may have to give it a try.

yeah, perhaps that's what they thought. Of course we'd never rip into something just because it's not done...I'll send em a mail to see what they say.

Woop indeed. The unfortunate thing about the demo is that there's a weapon upgrade system (and slots for new moves), but after you've beaten the first level and spent your points....

COMING SOON!

One other thing I was going to mention to you... Makita may seem underpowered at first (her gun overheats really easily) but probably only becasue Kyuzo is a monster. Her dashing attacks can be very useful at least.

I should be getting a different build, I'd think. This is gonna be the near-complete, dev-system run. I think.

And I like using fast characters. I'm going to have to educate myself on this 'comic' thing, too.
