Also from animenation news, Sony wants him to direct it.
"According to Variety Magazine, Genndy Tartakovsky, creator of Samurai Jack & Dexter's Laboratory, will direct the American live action/CG Astro Boy movie for Sony Pictures Entertainment."

Yeah, I heard that originally it was supposed to be entirely CGI but now will be part Live Action too. I wonder where they are gonna find a guy with a big enough nose to play Ochanomizu.

LOL, but the wonder of make-up can make a huge nose on anyone though.

That's not a bad choice for a director.... hmmmm, does this mean if the equally pointless live-action Samurai Jack film comes to light he'll direct it to?! because that might be a movie worth watching!

Yarg... I'm sorry, but I don't like Tartakovsky's action stuff. He did a great job with Dexter's Lab (one of my all-time favorite series, until they made those new ones), but Samurai Jack is just Tartakovsky in "trying too hard" mode. I'm not talking about the art style. That part's not that bad. But the poses and action and all of that is just... I don't know... just cheesy and over-dramatic in a bad way. I wish he would have just stuck with comedy... he was great with that.

So, this Astro Boy movie has me a bit worried.

I agree. I thought samurai jack was cool at first but it got REALLY annyoing that during every action sequence they would do that repeated zoom in replay thing. The music was good though. And Dexter was good as well as the PPG but they have both been lacking lately.

This will be his first live action project, I think. Let's hope he does a good job.

At first, I was irritated about Dexter's Lab sucking recently, because I thought Tartakovsky had ruined his own show, but I think the same thing happened to Dexter and the Powerpuff Girls that happened to Johnny Bravo- some other non-qualified person took over the show for one reason or another and now it sucks ass. I had only seen one new Powerpuff Girls episode, and it looked like it wasn't good anymore... I'm pretty sure Craig McCracken and Genndy Tartakovsky aren't directing their shows anymore (if McCracken is, I doubt he still has full control). It's sad; those shows used to be awesome. I don't even like the new art style in Dexter's Lab. I hate the way they draw the characters now (and they've even changed the actress that does Dexter's voice...). Bleh.

I second that. Dexters lab was mildly entertaing along with samurai jack initially, but it has really grown tiresome. The only shows I like on CN is adult swim.

Why dont they just commission a japanese company to make the film? Or make it a multicultural type film.
I smell weaksauce brewing.

it's not... You'd think a show were kindergarteners beat the living shit out of a monkey everyweek would never get old, but it has... and it's not a pretty sight (it's probably gotten a budget cut or something, since it looks like it's switched to Flash or whatever they use to make South Park now instead of hand drawing)

Actually, I think that's the problem... they've gotten more of a budget. It's all flashy-looking now, like the movie. I'm pretty sure the original creator of the show (McCracken) doesn't write or direct the show anymore... and now some crappy hack writers have taken over to milk it now that it's super-popular. I KNOW that's the case with Johnny Bravo, and I'm pretty sure it's also at least partially the case in Dexter's Lab (I don't think I've seen Tartakovsky's name in the credits on the new episodes), and I'm pretty sure it's the same deal with the Powerpuff Girls.

They sucked out the true spirit of the shows, and didn't get the characters right. It's crap now, and I'm not going to watch it.

I like Samurai Jack, can't stand Dexter's Laboratory or Power Puff. Course it's probably just because I'm to old to appreciate DL and PPG. As far as Star Wars, it's entertaining, but to me that's just the wrong style to make a Star Wars Cartoon. I'd prefer it looked something like the old Droids Cartoon or like G.I.Joe. I've been waiting years for a Star Wars Cartoon and I don't want it looking like Samurai Jack. And I really don't get why they seemed to make Mace Windu Dragon Ball Z styled Top Tier (Check the episodes where he beat 100s of Robots solo) when we all know he's gonna die.

As far as the Astro Boy Movie, there's so many Osamu Tezuka Astro Boy stories there are plenty of ways you can approach making the movie, from comedy, to romance, to 100% Science Fiction. I just hope they don't rehash the Atlas Story once again - I know it's his most popular story but the new Anime is rehashing the crap out of it - and do something new. The story of Astro Boy's Death and rebirth that took him through World War II would be an excellent story where he can Time Travel and have his origin at the same time. They might not want to do WWII however since Star Trek has done it to death, but there are plenty of wars to choose from.

Ohhh yeah, I forgot about the Star Wars thing... yeah, that's another example of the whole "trying too hard to make it cool" thing I was talking about earlier. I don't care for the style at all. I wish he'd just learn a little about subtlety and maybe his action stuff would be a lot less cheese-ball. There are times when you want to punch things up and add that little triple zoom and have everyone standing in that constipated/ tough guy pose (you know, the one that EVERYONE seems to be in at all times in the Star Wars thing), but even during action sequences, there can be a lot of subtle things to make a shot cool instead of over-doing everything for X-TREEME ACTION. Now I can't get that shot of Obi-Wan Kenobi on that flying space bike out of my head skidding to a stop and kicking up dust... it's on the commercials for the show. Yarg.

I haven't seen or read a lot of Astro Boy nor have I read anything else about the movie outside of this thread and I know this might sound like a silly question, but are they keeping Astro Boy a Japanese kid or are they doing what they did with Evangelion,"Ray" anyone?

Don't know, but since he's a Robot it might not matter. The people around him are all Japanese though and his story's in Japan in the Manga, but I kind of doubt there will be too many Japanese Actors. Kind of like the DBZ Movie has rumors floating around that Hugh Jackman will play Goku and Ray Park will play Vegeta. Well, I'm a big fan of Japanese Movies/Actors but with these movies made stateside I kind of don't think too many Japanese Actors will make these Movies, kind of like the Guyver and Fist of the Northstar US Movies.

I agree as well. I liked DL back in the day (haven't been able to watch it lately) but the only episodes of SJ I've ever honestly enjoyed were the Jack in Wonderland episode (lots of weird stuff there, and a centipede reference) and the first few with the Scotsman.

One episode that got me thinking "WTF was that? You've taken this the wrong direction." was when Jack was fighting some "monks" (I use that term loosely) and they kept flipping through the air, doing REALLY stiff spins (like, they were standing still yet flying through the air while spinning really fast) and it looked cheesey in a bad way.

Er, sorry about that rant. But yeah, I'm not too keen on all of these popular foreign shows getting made into movies by American studios. It's hard enough having any video game movie turn out even close to watchable, so now we've gotta go through it with anime as well? "Bah" I say. What's worse is that almost all of them are totally unrealistic and too styled to make work in a LA movie without them looking or feeling crappy.
