I've got a poll running to gauge interest for localized doujin PC software. Engage your voting ability!

please.

Looks neat. What genre would these mainly be (shooters, fighters, etc) or would it be a sampling of many different ones?

Sampling! But starting with shooters, probably. And they wouldn't be random, they'd be very select.

One thing I'd like to note, in case you haven't already taken this into account, is that you'll probably only get the real results of the poll after dividing the "yes" votes by three or four. A bunch of different web comic authors have done "Would you buy --insert comic here-- merchandise at --cheap price--?" polls and they've generally found that the majority of the "Yes" votes are actually "Yes... if I had money", or "Yes... if I bought stuff online, which I don't", or "Yes... once I've finished high school/college in two or three years".

Just my two cents. I hope it's not redundant. And I voted yes, by the way.

Well.. which 'yes' did you mean? :p

I already replied on that topic, but I'll reaffirm my yes is 'yes, if it came here. I would go without eating for a week to pay for it.'

in other words, if you voted yes in the poll, yet do not fill your obligation by not purchasing said translated game(s) from said party, you are, therefore, a jackass

charming performance

Well I voted for this Yes, so does that make me a jackass? Well does it?!?

Ok, lame attempts at humor aside. I'd vote yes, but only for fight and adventure games. I'm not big of a shooter junky (Yeah, I know I suck...) to pick one up at this point....

Could you define "unlicensed"? If it means "original", I don't think there is much to pick on.

I mean, the best doujinshi game groups I know of are:

Shangai Alice
Tasogare Frontier
Studio Siesta
Watanabe Seisakujo/Furansu Pan

Of all of them only Shangai Alice uses original characters. Tasogare makes EFZ which is based on Key/Visual Arts, not counting their new game which is not complete yet. Siesta is also based on Key/Visual Arts, and Watanabe's best work IMO is Melty Blood which is tied to Type-Moon, now commercial. Previous work is based on Leaf, and later work is based on Key/Visual Arts, Age Soft, other companies (Glove on Fight) and their latest is based on Gravity.

If by unlicensed you mean "stuff that has not been picked for US release", I think all of these games except Ragnarok Battle Online are good to go.

I think the price's reasonable for the most part. That is, I'd be willing to pay $20 for Brief Karate, but not for Mikagura.

I don't know, the pool of original doujin games that are attractive at $20 to $30 could dry up pretty quick. Unless you don't need to rely on a regular flow of income from the sales of these games...

How would these things be distributed? Directly through Insert Credit? A secondary business site? A partnership with an American distributor, such as an unholy alliance with XSGames? I didn't see it specified anywhere, but from the sounds of it the games would be brought over by IC, or at least by the IC staff.

When I think about game magazines that have also run a shop on the side all I can think of is the late, loopy GameFan magazine that would occasionally give glowing reviews to some obscure import game that -surprise!- was avaliable for purchase in the back of that same issue. To this day I'm still not sure if that magazine was interested in giving balanced, fair reviews or were more interested in shilling for the latest games they had for sale that month. Can IC continue to be seen as an objective news source if it has a financial stake in the games it is reporting on?

I'm sure you've already thought about these issues but since I didn't come across a full explanation of how you were going to handle this my thought process wandered off on a tangent.

I love this new dynamic that JJJ and I have. Instead of taking the time and effort to make a sig line of my own, I can just post something without one and then wait for him to fill one in for me. It's like my own personal BBS Trunk Monkey.

Thanks. Back in the trunk.

I think they mean the latter. And in that case, Melty Blood couldn't be included, because Geneon licensed the anime a week ago. It's a greyer area than fansubs, but I think that Geneon or any other anime company would still send a cease and desist over it.

haha, don't flatter yourself, cerote obscuro. despite what your ego has led you to believe, i'm not scanning the bbs, waiting for you to post. we just happen to share a lot of the same interests. and amongst the more amusing threads, annoyances sprout up, spewing watery feces all over the place. as i've always done, i clean up KRUPA as i see fit. it's just a funny, sick, and mildly irritating coincidence that the only crap i've been cleaning up nowadays has been yours

I am not quite sure about this. Geneon has the right to the Tsukihime anime, not Tsukihime itself.

Actually I do mean games with original characters...and I believe there are enough to go around, especially since (to answer zepy's thing) this will not be something we'd be depending on for money.

As for distribution, I'm not really thinking about getting it into shops, just getting it to established online distributors.

As for being objective, well - it's clearly not wise to review things that you're selling. That wouldn't happen.

And I think I can remain objective with the news posting, since I don't add much opinion there.

It's a valid question though.

And I am aware that the number of people that would actually follow through with a purchase is going to be lower than the number of 'yes' votes. But this is just the IC/MMCAFE group voting by and large...we'd probably do some small ads and stuff here and there.

We're going to leave h-games alone, since J-list seems to be a find job of that...though they are expensive.

Done right the game could be a promotion for the anime, so they might even want the game to come over. A bit of a stretch, but a possiblity.

And there are also people who love obscure stuff and will but it just because it's doujin, even if its a game they won't play very much, over a more commercial release.
