I would have been un-interested in the game if it was a fan sequel, since I don't like spending time on non-canon stuff. But the site says it's a remake! That makes me more interested, kinda.

This looks awesome -- I'll be all over this remake... if this ever comes out.
It definitely seems the motivation is there. But undoubtedly, Square Enix is going to get word of this project -- and I'm doubting it'll be the same situation with AGDI's remakes of Sierra adventure games. Whereas Sierra had long abandoned the adventure game genre, Square Enix depends on, and is pretty much defined by, its RPGs -- and we needn't mention that it wasn't that long ago that they re-released Chrono Trigger for the PS1.

Sweet Jesus. I'm not sure what I'm more shocked by, the fact that this doesn't look like crap or the fact that a bunch of Westerners have made a game that isn't an Unreal Tournament mod.

Square is the same company that actually gave a bunch of Westerners their blessing and allowed them to release a remix CD of their music that directly competes with some of their own commercial CD releases. They also didn't get too pissy about Xenosaga, even though I believe there was a copyright infringement case waiting to happen there.
So whether or not Square will be pissed off by this isn't really set in stone. It's more of a toss-up.

Well, I think the key is that it's only a demo (they're just selecting 10 scenes to redo), with no plan of actually remaking the entire game, so it wouldn't be competition (for an ancient game anyway). I think this might be kind of a fun way to reimagine certain scenes, plus it'll get it out much faster!

I'm amazed they are even doing so much for the demo. Doing a full 3D remake of a game like Chrono Trigger at this level is a massive undertaking. I think it would be very hard to accomplish without money getting involved.
Who knows, Square just might drop them a line and tell them they are interested in publishing a CT remake.

They're asking for the wrath of heavens when they say they're gonna dev it for Xbox and Gamecube, but I personally would love to see it happen. I also noticed that the music was done by Mathew Valente, who old-skool MOD music fans will recognize as TSSF, one of the best in the RPG Mod/Midi remix field.

Very interesting. I will have to keep an eye on it. For a fan project, much of the material they present is very professional. Hopefully they will have good luck and no legal or internal troubles will arise and we will eventually see this thing come to fruition. So far, the music, the art, and the idea seem all great in my opinion.

Ahh... so this really is the same Chrono Trigger game that I saw in the Overclocked Remix forums six months or so ago? I wondered about that.

Don't do me this, now I'll start to fantasize and start with vain hopes.... ugh...
Well, I'll check the site out... thanks a lot for the link, Freeter.

Yeah, they've been workign on it for quite some time. I know I've seen the first couple screens a while back.
It's still impressive nontheless and I would certainly buy a full game of this if Square had decided to endorse it or something, even if it would only come out on the PS2 then.
Updated when I can... which isn't very often. ^_^;;
On the flip side, this guy (link) was planning on squishing Chrono Cross into the original Chrono Trigger engine last I heard (though he doesn't seem real active about it.)

Shit, man, that takes me back. I remember when mods/s3ms/it etc. were the closest thing we had to good quality/small filesize digital recordings of music from games. TSSF and I go way back to early DALnet #square days, heheh. Haven't talked to him in a while, but I'm glad to see he's still putting his talents to use.

Well if anybody is worried about Square "foxing" this project, I remember seeing this about a year and a half ago. It looked interesting, I never followed up on it. Now that I see what they have accomplished now, they have a come a long way. If Square didn't do anything then, I don't see why they will now.

I'm assuming some big site like Slashdot or something linked this and they got overloaded or something.
