Certainly having campy Brit voices is a blow to the experience, but what do you say about their other criticisms of the game, like excessively trial-and-error oriented gameplay and excessive repetition of certain areas?

Opinions on this game seem a little polarized, so I'd like to hear a bit more about it before I try it out...

Funny, that criticism is probably my favorite aspect of Siren.
Well, that and Shiro simply breathing.

Yes, that's the point. The game is difficult. You die often. You must find your own pattern to finish a mission, and some patterns are more difficult than others. Some maps are re-used up to (gasp) 3 times, and thank god they are, since you need to know a map well to be effective in it.
But the biggest thing is that the game is hard, and I guess most low level gamers don't like to die, they want a game to take them from the start to the conclusion without them making any efforts. Or a different kind of effort I guess, like jumping 200 times to evade a thunder blow. I prefer Siren, if you ask me.

Who the hell at Square thought that was fun? I tried one time then said screw it since I play games for fun, not so I can impress a DVD with my amazing button reflex abilities.

Square hasn't done a fun minigame since the snowboard game at Goldsaucer in FF7. They should give up on those since they don't seem to be very good at making them.

On the topic of Siren, EGM didn't like it either. I've heard lots of complaints about cheap sniper zombie deaths which sounds kinda bad. I don't mind difficulty, but I don't like it when it's out of your hands because enemies have unfair advantages. I'll probably get the game when the price drops a little.

There are a lot of complains that can be made to the game, but snipers are definitely NOT an issue. They can kill you in 1 hit, but so do you when you have their weapon(and sometimes they can even need 2 hits to kill you, so the advantage is on your side). The snipers kill you ? You are a bad player. There are several ways to evade them, depending on the mission, your characters, or your own capacities as a player. It is possible, even easy when you get used to the game mechanics, to go and kill a sniper with the stupid metal pole you get in Kyôya's first mission. Do you have to do it ? Not necessarely, it depends on your play style. Mostly, you won't. When you will really NEED to kill a sniper, you will either have a sniper riffle or a gun, so you are roughtly on par with them. And it's still difficult, you still need a little practice, but it's definitely NOT the hardest part of the game. Blaming the game because you have poor skills is an interesting way to write a review.
Oh, I forgot. The snipers are undead, so they wake up after one or two minutes. Oh, yes, that must be the unfair thing they were talking about.

Hmm ok. I reread the article and one guy didn't like the game since he had to go back and replay the leves 15 times since the map didn't have you or the monsters on it (which I thought was intentional according to developer interviews), the second guy liked it except for some unmentioned problems he hopes will be fixed in Siren 2, and the third guy hated all the red herring items and "nonsensical" puzzles.

The sniper complaint is a combination of the first guy (who I think didn't really understand the game) and people who I've heard who've played the game. It sounds like they didn't have the correct mindset to get into it.

I'm still going to wait on it a bit though. It sounds neat, but I'm trying to save some cash right now.

Do I really need to answer this one ?

But I'm not forcing you to buy it, I mean, it's a real hardore game, for people who want a hard game in different way, and the dubbing is a catastrophy in my opinion, so maybe the game won't be worth more than the used price you may be able to pay for it in a few month.

The dubbing wasnt that bad. At first its kind of weird seeing these Japanese people with British accents, but you get used to it (the Damon voice kind of fits). The one thing that bothers me is that the volume in the recordings is really low. I had to raise the volume a lot to hear the combination on the tape.

I didn't think the dubbing was that horrible either. It was only really bad in the beginning. And even then, Dynasty Warriors 4 was muchworse than even that.

I just beat the game today..It's a masterpiece in concept and storyline, but could use some work in other areas, I feel.

And the endings..wow.

I still can't figure out what happens to Tamon Takeuchi and Yoriko Anno (sp?)..Do they return to the real world, or stay behind in Hanuda?

Personally, I seldom read reviews these days to find out if games are "good" or "bad"; I mainly read them to find out if there are glaring problems that will serve to really tick me off (e.g. showstopper bugs, severe memory leaks, massively exploitable game mechanics, monstrously poorly designed areas, etc.), or for some personal amusement (e.g. IC...).

I remember shooter reviews written by people who have no taste for shooters: blah blah about it being too hard and you dying in one hit. It's not unfair, it's that it's meant to be hard. That said, there is such a thing as poor design, and that's the kind of thing I like to be wary of.

No, they stay trapped in the other dimension, along with Kyoya and Makino, if he is alive (we're not sure, I think he is, I even have a reasonable hypothesis).

There are courageous design decisions in Siren, as I said in the review in IC. If you want a HARD game, a really hard game likewe used to have years ago, and a game with a great scenario, where you need to THINK.
The game is not designed for a wide audience. The game may not be appealing to you if you don't want a complex or hard. I know I wanted that, and the only thing that deceived me in Siren is that I would have liked the game to be a little longer. not much, only a few hundreds hour longer.

OFF TOPIC NONSENSE

Iggy, do you mind if I shoot several annoying questions your way? I am anyway.

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -

1) Second "obscured" name on the library card? Eiji's?
2) What was the point of Miyatan's second objective to find the old WW2 explosives? At first I thought it was to blow apart Shovel-chan, but....so that Suda has them at the end when he goes >apeshit?
3) Obligatory why does Tamon have a police issued revolver question.
4) Again, Miyatan's pretty hot. They should've made the stake sequence a Square-like mini-game.

Yao.

2) What was the point of Miyatan's second objective to find the old WW2 explosives?
He uses them to destroy the dam.

so that Suda has them at the end when he goes >apeshit?
In the Genocide Ending ? I forgot about it...

3) Obligatory why does Tamon have a police issued revolver question.
We don't know yet. He may have bought it blackmarket, or have received it in 76. The point of the gun is to show he knows what would happen, because he was the "Harumi" in 76. What happened exactly then, with the last Miyako and Akira's son, we know, but the details of the wherabouts of the Takeuchi family are unknown. Things may have been less easy for young Tamon then for Harumi. Hopefully, Siren Maniacs will bring a light on this.
And will Harumi wear a wig in Siren 2 ?

4) Again, Miyatan's pretty hot. They should've made the stake sequence a Square-like mini-game.
Miyata + 3P with the Onda sisters = my role model.

Much thanks.

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -

Suda has the grenades strapped on him when ices the 31. Makes him sorta look like Chewbacca with his haircut. The game would've been somehow been better if he was a hulking otaku mass that groaned like a wookie.

You also reminded me what a tragic character Akira is. I wish they had put less on the website and more in the game. The other character's sections were much more peripheral, but Akira's section really fleshed him out much better then the game did.
