(News from Slashdot Games)

You've probably already seen the TV Game boxes from Jakks, housing games from such companies as Namco and Atari. Jakks has now just signed a deal with Capcom to distribute a collection of Capcom games in such a method. Capcom's box will have five games -- 1942, Ghosts and Goblins, Gun.Smoke, Side Arms, and the original Megaman.

I was assuming, because it's including Megaman, that these games would all be the NES versions. However, Side Arms doesn't appear to have an NES port -- and looking at arcade pics, I couldn't match it up with any other NES Capcom game that might've been renamed for home release. So, I guess we'll see later what versions of each of these games we'll get.

Well Megaman is popular, and I think it was originally meant to be an arcade game anyway. I believe its the only MM game with a score counter.

You might also be able to count the non-traditional titles Power Battle and Power Fighters -- both which had important storyline info (Power Fighters having much more info).

Though, now, I wonder -- given that some arcade and home versions of Capcom's early titles were sometimes different (or often different?), I wonder what an arcade version of Rockman would've been like during that early era...?

If these are truly arcade ports, this may be very worth it. Much higher quality games than the others Jakks has ported. I hope they do a good job with the button layout, though.

I was worried the collection was going to feature games like Son Son or something but if it's features a good arcade port of Side Arms and the other titles listed this will be a great buy. Was there a Mega Man arcade game before Power Battles? I can't think of one but I'm not as big a blue bomber fan as other people are.

Now all we need is someone to release a SNK collection like this that has all the Ikari type games in it with a special twisty top joystick.

Hmm...

I don't know about this. Aside from the Atari VCS ports, I heard a lot of the other portable machines had problems with sound. So based on this, I'm not so confident this new all-in-one box will do these capcom games justice.

I remember an interview with a Capcom guy saying that Megaman was designed so that people would use up quarters figuring out the stage order so I think it was (or at least was planned to be) an arcade game. These tv plug ins interest me, but so far the games themselves are what I don't care for. I'm pretty interested in this and the "coming soon" Ms Pacman one though.

True. I managed to try one of these doohickies for the first time yesterday and wasn't thrilled at the shortcomings in the games. Galaxian didn't look as sharp as it did in the arcade and the Dig Dug drill noise sounded incredibly tinny. If that fat controller can't properly pull off those two games how can does company hope to properly port the Capcom games on the list?
