"Cartoonist Mitsuteru Yokoyama, best known as the creator of the animation series Gigantor (Tetsujin 28-go), suffered serious burns and died after a fire broke out at his Tokyo home early Thursday, police said."

Mainichi Daily News /
article

Wow, that's so sad. I really loved Tetsujin 28-go as a kid, and they're even airing the new season/remake this month :(
It's not out on fansubs though.

And the remake RULES too.
The last two remakes were not at all true to the spirit, but this new one Finally does justice, so far.

For people who doesn't know, Yokoyama is one of the founding fathers of modern manga, and anime.

Tetsujin 28gou (Gigantor) written in 1956 was the first Giant Robot manga/anime ever, and started a genre.
He also started the whole magical girl genre with Mahoutsukai Sally.
And as you know, Giant Robot and Magical girl anime are two of the biggest genre in anime.

R.I.P to the last of the two greatest manga artists ever lived.

Oh, my god -- this is fucking terrible news. Yokoyama is one of my favorite manga artists. In addition to the aforementioned titles, he also was the creator of Babiru Nisei (aka, Babel II). Babiru was the first of his works that I read, and from there I began looking into the rest of his nearly boundless body of work. 15 years after the death of Tezuka Osamu, Japan has lost another of manga's truly great pioneers and creative spirits.
