Tangential to the advertainment thread, and perhaps warranting a thread of its own -- since the video game itself isn't the direct advertisment here -- the Nielsen Entertainment group will be studying and reporting on the effects of advertisements in video games.

And check out this bullshit.

"The study we conducted with Activision shows that not only are a solid proportion of gamers consciously aware of advertising in the games they play, but they also have positive perceptions of these advertisements in terms of recall, perceived realism of the games, and beneficial impact in deciding which products to buy."

As a 'heavy' gamer, I actually PREFER that my games be packed with adverts for actual products. It's like I'm in the really real world, for real! The realism is so realistic!

I really appreciate the Grand Theft Auto games for choosing to make fun of advertising instead of cashing in on it.

For me it really depends. In a "realistic" game like Splinter Cell I think it makes sense to have actual products as long as they aren't in your face all the time (having to slowly crawl past a huge neon sign advertising McDonalds or something).

But in most others that it really breaks the mood. Like "Wow that water dragon sure was a tough fight! Now I must refill my HP with the refreshing taste of Pepsi(C), the voice of a new console generation(R)!!"

I liked the Sobe machines in Oddworld... but that's probably just were there was like 1 of them (maybe 2) and every other 'health up' machine is "Energy" (and I like Sobe)

Also I'm so stupid I didn't realized Jet-Moto was nothing but ads until like last year (I thought they made up the 'Dragon' logo)

It makes sense in racing and sports games especially. A lack of advertisements actually feels inauthentic in those games. Most other games it feels alienating to me.

The hidden feature in Devil May Cry 2 was a clothing ad disguised as an extra bonus. Already faced with a crappy game, you wait for things to turn around in the end and are slapped with this cheap costume swap ad.

Rocking the 0th post ad infinitum.

I actually didn't mind the Diesel costumes... but that's just because I have to walk past a Diesel everyday going to school and think it's hilliarous the clerks have to actually wear the clothes they sell
