Having recently come across Tony and Friends in Kellogg's Land thanks to an Amiga enthusiast friend of mine, I thought -- let's start a discussion about video games as advertainment.

Discuss! Were there any games that you found noteworthy, either for being somewhat original (or having a good delivery) -- or being horribly bad? And did you have an urge to drink 7UP or eat Cheetos afterward?

---

EDIT (2004 Apr 08 13:20 GMT -0800): This'll be the thread about video games as ads -- the Nielsen thread will cover ads in video games. (Sorry I didn't specify earlier!)

The Tony Hawk series is wall to wall adds now. I'm sure the next one will have commericals before letting you play the damn game.

Heh -- I should've warned I was going to start another thread about ads in video games, as opposed to video games being the ads themselves.

EDIT: Done!

Cool Spot. It was actually alright as a game, and I enjoyed playing it.

Yo Noid, however, wasn't very fun to me.

Yeah, I was going to mention Cool Spot and Yo Noid, but I got sidetracked. Anyway, Cool Spot was one of those Genesis games that was well-executed, and kind of fun to play, and it didn't make me want a 7Up, so it was not too bad all around. The fact that it was centered around an ad for a drink hurts the game, but it wasn't the worst game ever. At least it's not Yo Noid.

I liked Cool Spot...

Also I liked MacKids... I like how in MacKids (I think that's the title) the closest thing to power up was an box that turned your characrer into a black kid (and player 2 into a white kid) and back (But both Mic and Mac had the same powers, so this blocks usefulness was pretty much a to Nintendos could swap palletes on the fly I guess)

I forget where I heard this from. Was it the Simpsons episode, where Homer buys a new car, or was it the Family Guy episode where Peter buys a car?

Slashdot culture made it onto TV?

Family Guy. But it's all taken from comic Yakov Smirnov anyway.

but the Simpsons did had some great Yakov style lines in the Branson episode like "In Soviet Union Revue watches you!" and "In Russia backstage is for performers only"

and of course King of the Hill had the best Yakov joke ever thanks to Bobby: "In the United States they put 'In God We Trust' on the money... In Russia WE HAVE NO MONEY!"

so what I'm saying is, being such a pop culture mainstay why hasn't someone tried to cash in on Yakov by releasing a "BEST OF" humor CD or something? Has he gone into semi-retirement or something?

Yakov is still around. He is in Branson, Missouri doing shows.

Pop culture icon, not quite.
Pop culture relic, more likely.

There have been some "best of" albums in the pre-CD era of album releases, but nothing since.

I know that, but Branson doesn't count for anything.

The "road forks you!" one I did was straight out of Family Guy.... I seem to remember ther "car drives you!" one in there too, but I'd have to check. I don't think the rest of them were directly quoted from anything.
