Whoever made the flash used ascii art compiled from other artists. He didn't make all of it himself.
Too make a single AA picture...well they have made a few programs specifically to aid in the creation of AA. These programs allow you to lay the picture under your work area and trace over it. They also have organized paletts for different categories of AA characters.

I was wondering how they did those... I couldn't imagine someone sitting in front of a computer for hours making detailed ASCII images with no reference image underneath or anything...
