The first episode of GS is Naruhodo Ryuichi's first trial. He is what you could expect from a hero, nice guy, intimidated, etc. His mentor, Ayasato Chihiro stands by him and gives him some advices. Since it is GS1, she's very ugly, but it doesn't matter, because after you win the first trial and you see how Chihiro and Naruhodo are good friends and trust each other and etc, Chihiro is killed for reasons too long to explain, and the murder is the subject of the second trial. Naruhodo must defend her sister, Mayoi, who is even uglier than her sister, but is also extremeley non charismatic and I hate her and I wished there would be a way to make her die. The Ayasato family is a family of mediums. In Naruhodo's second trial, which is far more difficult then the first, especially for a newbie like Naruhodo, at one point, everything seems to be lost, when Mayoi gets possessed by the spirit of her sister (which makes her a little less ugly), and the advice of Chihiro allows you to win. Mayoi-possessed-by-Chihiro becomes the natural ally of Naruhodo, standing next to him in the court and giving him advices at key moments (except when Mayoi gets arrested again, in which case Chihiro possess their young cousin, the cute little Harumi (9), whose scenario I won't explain but who appears in GS2, which allows her to be well drawned and her possessed self to be beautifull (even though, as Chihiro says, her breasts are hurting in that little body). Anyways, as times goes by, Naruhodo evolves, get more and more brilliant and famous, and unfortunately Mayoi spends most of her time unpossessed. Chihiro helps him in all the trials of GS1, in a few trials of GS2, and only once in GS3 (plus one time out of the court). The character evolves, but stays as nice as he was in the first episode.
GS3, however, is one long story which begins some years before GS1, when Naruhodo was a pussy (and still a student) and become Chihiro's second client. For GS3, she is redrawned for the best, and you play with her two times, in two flashbacks, once in her second trial with Naruhodo, the second time in her first trial, against The Devil, who beats her pretty badly. She then takes her revenge in the second trial (which you play first whithout knowing why Chihiro is so obsessed with that girl ; the sequence is very funny, because Chihiro become an hysteric bitch, but when you play the first trial which explains some of the things The Devil has done, you understand why Chihiro reacted that way and you feel pretty bad to have laughed at her). Either way, Chihiro's second trial ends with The Devil beeing sentenced to death, and everyone is happy. Then the final episode of GS3 (and of the whole series) begins and tie all lose ends in a karei na gyakuten.

Now that the King has spoken, the Gyakuten Princess will say a few words...
I would characterize Naruhodo as the sort of "boring everyday guy" who is actually "an amazing hero with a strong heart". He is at times amazingly clever, smart, cool and confidant, but at other times flustered and naive. He rarely is ruled by his emotions while still remaining compassionate and makes human mistakes and amazing triumphs, too.
I'd say he's a bit of a "stick in the mud", though, as he doesn't really have any hobbies, tends to avoid anything that could be fun (or requires much effort on his part) and seems out of touch with youth culture altogether. He's a good friend, especially to Mayoi and believes strongly in his clients, as Chihiro taught him. In court he goes between being flustered or being very confidant and commanding with a pace that becomes more and more intense as he turns the trials around.
When he was in college he was a total idiot, though. Lovesick, over emotional, spastic and gullible. The "true" Naruhodo shined through a bit, though. As the games progress, I suppose he becomes more confidant and competant, but it seemed like such a natural progression that I barely noticed.
Chihiro, on the other hand, I see as an "Angel of Justice". In the present, she's very calm, competant, mature and wise. She is able to smile, even in tough times (like being killed), but can turn on her "serious mode" to lay the law down as well. She's a brilliant thinker, who doesn't lose her cool as well as a caring partner.
In the past, she was somewhat ruled by her emotions and very nervous. She talked to herself a lot and would sometimes slip up and say really dumb things (like "Hoshikage couldn't be here because he's attending very important business", when he's sitting right beside her). She was very driven, despite some insecurities, to achieve justice and believed strongly in her clients.
Chihiro's "beyond the grave" showdown with Chinami at the end, as well as her line to her (something like "All of your life, even in your death, you will bow before me in defeat")were very powerful and super "justice!!!!".
I don't think Mayoi is as ugly as Iggy says, though she's only cute when she smiles, cries or passes out (at the end of the game). Her irritating tendency to open her mouth wide in happiness at the end of chapters is REALLY ugly and annoying, though.
And Godo is the sexiest man ever, I think. It's almost wrong.
