Well, I just got back from seeing Hellboy. I enjoyed it. I haven't read too many of the Hellboy comics yet. I had read some reviews of the movie ahead of time that criticized some things about it, but it was a completely enjoyable experience for me. I'm gonna have to buy the trades now, because I'm definately more interested in the book. I did pick up the 25 cent reprint of 'The Corpse'. Anyway, has anyone else seen it yet? Your thoughts?

I think I had my hopes too high (In my logic, any movie which has a cyborg zombie nazi with a wind-up heart working with Rasputin to destroy the world HAS to be good) but I was vaguely disappointed.. but this isn't to say it's bad, it's definately a fun romp, and "Red" himself has a many great lines.

Edit 2: Where'd my spoiler go?? Had to add it again.

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
That Lovecraftian monster at the end there disappointed me. It went down so easy it was almost funny... He's a freakin' Great Old One, he doesn't go down, period! >_<

I blame yer spoiler on the whole 'each time I come back, I bring a little bit more with me' thing.

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
Sure, I'm not sure exactly how the mythos works, but I saw it as more of a spawn or shadow or whatnot of what was on the other side as opposed to a direct physical manifestation. Now, this is not to say that I wasn't a bit let down by the final confrontaion,. I mean, we all knew it was gonna eat gernades eventually, but it would have been nice to see a bit more go into said eating. On a side note, what's up with Liz needing a slap across the face to jump start her powers. Sure, seeing your buddy die isn't impetus enough to flame on, but a little tap on the cheek and boom, it's go time.

End of Spoiler

I saw this movie last night and I was rather unimpressed. It wasn't horrible or anything but it really didn't catch my interest the way similar movies have. I did find several aspects of the movie really stupid though:

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
1) The Hellhound monster (Sammy or whatever the hell it was called) was supposed to reborn as two beasts for each one that died, right? Then why was their solution to this problem just to kill them all at the same time? The first one was singular and when HB killed it, it became two - so I don't see why killing 7 at once wouldn't just cause 14 more to come back. Why did this tactic work??? I really hope I missed the explanation somewhere because I thought this was exceedingly dumb.

2) The way they brought Liz back to life at the end was so lame....

3) The Great One's incredible weakness was kind of anti-climatic as well. That Sammy monster was a helluva lot tougher that Squidward

4) Why didn't anyone's clothes burn when Liz went supernova? A pointless complaint I know, but it just seemed so silly

End of Spoiler

On the upside, the part with the little kid was pretty amusing. And the clockwork Nazi was really really awesome. I only wish that they kept him in the outfit he had at the beginning - his present day look was just too 1980's ninja.

All and all, I'd have to give Hellboy a tentative thumbs down.

The Hellboy comics, for me, are this strange collection of stuff that's held together by Mike Mignola's art and his love for the elements he's fused together. It works because it's one man's vision of all these things he obviously digs. The Hellboy movie struck me as Guillermo del Toro's interpretation of elements Mingola has already borrowed from somewhere else. That gives the movie a copy of a copy feel which means it may not be perfect but it's still not bad at all. For example, not only is this the only movie I've ever seen that features some sort of Lovecraftian unspeakable monstrosity but then has some big red dude jump in and start punching the crap out of it. That's art, man.

My compliments to the film makers for creating one of the grossest PG-13 movies I've seen in awhile as well as managing to make a movie starring Ron Perlman. Still, I was a little disappointed there weren't any cyborg apes or even any regular gun toting monkeys in the movie. I was hoping to see Hellboy duke it out with a Nazi robo-monkey but I guess there's only so much they can stick into one movie.

Answer to your first spoiler question:

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
I think it had something to do with the fact that when Sammael was reborn twice each time it died it was reborn from the eggs. So when they destroyed all the eggs and creatures at the same time it couldn't be reborn anymore.

Of the reviews I read before going to see the film, most said that this is a movie intended really for the fans of the original Hellboy comic, and after seeing the movie, I tend to agree. I only recently got into the comic, but consider myself a fan, and I was pleased with Hellboy. Ron Perlman does an excellent job playing HB. He really brings out the character for what he's supposed to be: a demon who doesn't act like a demon. The other characters come out beautifully, though I think Rasputin could have been a little bit better. And Kronen is an uber-bastard. I'd like to see him take on Bloodrayne.

I went to see the movie with my dad and brother, and they claimed they didn't like it as much. They said that it would have been better if the movie was more like Spiderman. You have to understand that Spiderman and Hellboy are two very different superheroes with very different mechanics. Their attitudes are different, their personae are different. But I think that Hellboy feels a whole lot more human than Spiderman could ever be. The scenes prove it. Look at the rooftop scenes with the boy, the save-the-kittens scene, and any scene with him and Linda. I think this movie was more character driven than Spiderman... but then that's just me.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie. Undoubtedly tne new Best Dark-Horse Comic adaptation out there (I only know of two others: Virus and The Mask). I hope there are sequels. I also home that Del Toro actually goes through with the Hellboy anime idea he discussed a while back.

Also, wouldn't it be a neat idea to have Hellby and the BPRD fight or team up with Alucard and the Hellsing Organization? *Drool*

Hell, the gun battle would be so badass. Hellboy and his Samaritan vs Alucard and the Jackal! Hehe... and if Hellboy can say oneliners, then for Alucard, Willis would appear (read the comic... LOL).

I liked Hellboy, but I just wanted to point out that I feel differently about those statements then you. Not an attack, just saying that I disagree.

Your dad and brother didn't like it though? I wouldn't have wanted Hellboy to be like Spider-man at all, I mean, Spider-man is Spider-man and Hellboy is Hellboy. You are right, they are two different heroes and they both have completely different stories and comic types. My sister went and saw Hellboy with me and we both liked it. She's never read the book or anything and, as I've said, I've read very little of it. If my dad had gone with us, he'd probably have liked it. Anyways, I'm glad you appreciated it.

Answer to your first spoiler question:

I think that's correct, or at least the way I saw it was... although it could have been clearer that was the case, my friend pretty much asked the same question after the movie, so it's probably one of those things you either picked up on or were confused by.
A little on such topic:

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
I think calling the things "eggs" is what confuses people... people assume eggs will hatch on their own, I mean a chicken doesn't die so it's egg hatches, right?

The eggs seemed to be more like vessels for the souls to return into, so when there's no more left there's no way back, rather then true "baby eggs"... although it's never really explained, it can be guested by watching the movie, but it could also be assumed the eggs were just hatching during the battle and adding to the ressurecting Sammys.

End of Spoiler

Anyway, I liked the movie... nothing else to say except that.

Just came back from Hellboy. I didn't love it, but I still thought it was very good. In regards to the on-going spoiler question:

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
I think it all comes back to the scene where Rasputin releases Sammael from the statue. The "salt from a thousand angels' tears" kept Sammael's body from regenerating, but Rasputin's breath gave it life. I got the feeling that the eggs couldn't attain their full form without that breath either, so the eggs could only hatch when a Sammael died and released more of the breath.

We're definitely missing a scene that explains all of this, though. I have a feeling that that's going to be one of those deleted scenes on the DVD that makes you say, "NOW it makes sense. Why the Hell did they cut that?!"

End of Spoiler

In response to the other spoiler, though...
Hellboy and Disgaea spoilers:

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
"2) The way they brought Liz back to life at the end was so lame...."

The way they brought Liz back reminded me of the scenes in Disgaea where Laharl commands Death and God to do his bidding... except it somehow worked a lot better when it was delivered by a game sprite and his poorly paid voice actor, rather than thousands of dollars of makeup and a highly paid, well-known actor. If they had Hellboy actually confront something, or at least look upwards, and command something to bring her back, I think it would've been a pretty cool scene. But instead, he just whispers something and Liz asks what he said, which really didn't work well at all.

The comic draws from Lovecraft as well as other authors who wrote of similiar matters, a ton of weird and cool folk tales and myths, pulp heroes such as The Shadow, and Jack Kirby. There's probably other stuff as well but that was just off the top of my head.

Well, Mr. Lovecraft frequently encouraged others to write in his little universe (which is probably why there are so many pseudo-Lovecraft stories around) so I don't think he'd mind a bit. ^^

Shaggy and Scooby went into an evil scientist's refrigerater and started drinking the chemical viles. One of them turned Shaggy into a girl, and he had huge knockers.

Another Potion made Shaggy big and strong, until Scooby drank a potion that made him super smart and he started talking like Mr. Peabody and mixed potions together and created a cure.

Well, it was a cool Movie for Scooby fans. I liked Part 1 more because the makers of the Movie shared my opinion on how annoying Scrappy is. I hope Scooby Dum comes out in part 3!

Well then that's poor film writing... if you drank a potion that gave you huge knockers, super strength, or higher intelligence why would you 'cure' yourself?

Also none of those sound very "evil" to me, maybe the scientist should you know, sell those as drugs to the masses and get flithy stinking rich.

The original concept art for Van Helsing, before Hugh Jackman was ever brought on board, looked exactly like D. I'm not saying it's a ripoff, but someone, somewhere in the production of this movie really liked the Vampire Hunter D movies a lot. There are other similarities, but I'm not really going to call them on it until I see the movie, because all of the descriptions of the script and the press teasers that I've read have been very different from either of the trailers.

Really? See I didn't know that and now I'm willing to accept maybe there is more to him being D-esque then a floppy hat and very similar attire.... I'm just glad no ones going crazy and thinking this is a bastardized americanized translation of "Hellsing"

About Van Helsing's origins...

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
Even though the original Dracula novel doesn't mention it, a lot of authors have theorized that Van Helsing is somehow related to Vlad Dracula. One noteworthy author who has a unique perspective on this is Jeanne Kalorgridis, and her vampire series has a rather unique ending regarding Van Helsing and Dracula.

But, we can't really say that anything is canon anymore, or can we? Stoke only wrote one Dracula book, yet there are countless spinoffs. Like Sherlock Holmes, a lot of authors toy with these characters not only because the stories are in public domain, but also because they're so fascinating and you can't help but wonder what else can happen in these worlds.

End of Spoiler

I can only hope that Sherlock Holmes and the Vengeance of Dracula movie is made. I had heard a lot of script reviews that this would make a badass movie.

Anyone seen the Garfield Trailer? What's up with Garfield moving his lips? All his speech is thoughts. And Odie can't be computer Generated instead of using a real dog? Same thing happened with Brain in the Inspector Gadget Movie. Looks like Scoogy and Shaggy only get the CGI treatment.

You're all elitist bastards that couldn't have fun if someone squirted ketchup all over your nads.

Also, does anyone have any info on Ron Perlman's TV series Beauty and the Beast?

When they gave the trailer for Van Helsing in the Movie Theater at the end, I screamed out, "CASTLEVANIA!" My best friend started dying laughinbg and a few other people in the Movie Theater started to laugh too!

Even months later, the joke still hasn't gotten old.
