I can't believe it! This French site says that Maximo game designer Mars Rogers from Studio 8 is currently working on a remake of 80s arcade classic Bionic Commando. I'm so happy someone might resurrect that gem. If it's in 3D, you can expect an incredible giddy-dizzy experience! I hope more news will emerge soon.

I would love to see it. But I wonder if Hitler will still be there...

Bionic Commando was Capcom if I do recall, and I don't know if I do recall correctly but Megaman 'borrowed' concepts from Bionic Commando... I can't recall if it was an arcade game; I have to check my dates all over again ;)

Here's a clickable link.

If it turns out to be true, it'll be great if it manages to capture the gameplay of the NES game. It'll be awesome, however, if it manages to capture the original art and music style. For some odd reason, I imagine some kind of 70s or early 80s anime style -- especially with Area 5's music and color scheme.

(Damn, I love Capcom music from that era...)

Makes sense to me, Studio 8 is really active lately, and they love those classic games.

If we're lucky we may see something at E3.

The more I think about this the more cool it sounds. If they can figure out how to make the grappling hook gimmick as interesting and as central to the game as it was in the first game this could be really fun.

Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden made a pretty successful leap into 3D and they did a good job on Maximo... sounds like a game to keep my eye on. Hopefully the grapple arm will be something on the level of webslinging in Activion's Spiderman games.

How was the webslinging action in Activision's Spiderman overall? I missed out on it.

My pipe dreams involve using the Bionic Arm as a way to travel super-fast through a stage. Though there would the diagonal arm-aiming and swinging, there would also be ways to latch and pull the hero onto walls or objects to narrowly avoid melee attacks or shots. (Maybe through latchable hotspots?) Don't know -- I'm just imagining the action being very arcade-like, involving really-quick reflexes and heavy action.

Overall the webslinging is well thought out and fun... especially in Spider-man The Movie. The rooftop levels are the best for webswinging and you have control over the speed and how wide the swings are. It's useful in closed in areas too though... you can use a web line to tangle up opponents and you can use a zip line to instantly go up to the roof or side walls. It's really effective to get out of gang beatings and for some bosses like the Shocker, it's the only way to dodge his attacks in time. It also works in reverse... when on a roof you can lower yourself down on a zip line.

Hopefully they'll retain the charge in and take no prisoners kind of feel to Bionic Commando... I don't think it would be good as a Metal Gear Solid or Splinter Cell type of stealth action game.

Definately. I really, really hope this isn't an early April-fools joke...

It may not be as weird as you think as I had the same thought. Cel-shaded graphics done in a superflat-esk style just seems very appropriate to me.

For some reason, I see a new incarnation of Bionic Commando to be reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid, but with the same bionic arm action we know from the other games.

Can't help but notice it says "arcade classic".. I hope it has more in common with the famicom/NES game than the arcade one, ha ha ha.

I hope a BC remake doesn't take this approach. I'm really really tired of stealth MGS knockoffs so the last thing I'd want to see is a great action based title like BC dummied down to a routine skulk around.

I can only assume this new version would be a 3D game. I have to wonder what impact the addition of the 3rd dimension would have on control of bionic arm swings (the physics certainly wouldn't give you the simple front/back swing found in the NES and arcade titles). Whatever they do, I hope it's user friendly and allows for fast and fluid gameplay.

So swinging like in Metroid Prime?

But seriously, I think a BC game with stealth features would be interesting. Consider scaling a tower or building while trying to be covert.

I agree, I can't really see a stealth thing working in BC. A guy who's running around with a machine gun and an extendo-arm doesn't strike me as the type who would be subtle when dealing with problems. The only way I could see that working is if they somehow incorporated the arm into the stealth gameplay such as tapping someone on the left shoulder from across the room and then running off to the right. Eh, whatever they do I hope they come up with something better than the nonsense I'm suggesting.

From what I hear, this was an idea that was suggested to the Japanese office and shot down.

It could still be possible, but don't get those hopes up too high...

I'll just keep to my pipe dreams of 70s/80s music and art style. A modern rendition of this game might not have it.

Random screenshots:
NES version, an ending screenshot
Original GB version screenshots from VGMuseum (pop-ups)

And, hey Mog -- good to hear I'm not the only one that finds the style appropriate. Though -- to anyone who wants to answer -- would that also be considered superflat? I had the impression that superflat was more along the lines of Cool Cool Toon's art style.

I would like to see a combo of stealth and action. The bionic arm has no chance of being quiet so the game's focus can't be on stealth, but Rad could easily hide above the enemies to setup an ambush.

There is huge potential if this remake is true. Hiding above/below the enemy, using his bionic arm to disable the enemy, grabbing the enemy and throwing them into their buddies, etc. Since Capcom isn't giving us a new SF for a long time the least they could do is give this great game a much needed face lift.

That's a bummer. Even though I didn't really care for Maximo I was interested in seeing what could be done with an update to BC. Did Maximo 2 not sell as well as was hoped for?
