picked this up yesterday, I have to say its the best volume so far. it seems that yukari is back to being an english teacher (they changed it to spanish for some reason). anyway, this volume tops all the others because this one includes translators notes. it feels like they managed to keep a lot more of the in-jokes and cultural humor than before. and anything they DID change is explained thoroughly in the notes. honestly I wish they'd go back and do this for the first two volumes, I'd probably buy them again.

Sweet thanks for the heads up!

So I imagine they'll provide the same kind of information in the DVD. I've been meaning to buy the third volume, but the task keeps getting pushed out for more important stuff; I'll see if I can manage it sometime next week. Anyway -- thanks for the info, threesixtee!

Tangent: Oddly enough, it just occured to me that adapting "fuhgeddaboudit" into the boke-tsukkomi scene would be pretty hard to pull off for the dubs; I wonder if they're going to try their best with it, or if they'll revert to boke-tsukkomi (or something similar)?

I'm assuming the subs will just do boke-tsukkomi. [EDIT: Or did we already discuss this in a past thread?]

I liked the translation notes, I didn't know it was there until I finished reading, a nice ... glad to know what "Target and Old Navy" were in the original.

Fun side note:
Not unlike Chiyo-chan, my mom HATES hearing about people getting cut... I made her read the two stories Kagura tells about her father and friend from elementary school, her reactions were priceless!

There you go.

(just because Kagura is slowly overtaking Yomi and Osaka as my favorite character...)

OK, here's a question:

Have the Azumanga DVD release the option to set the language to Japanese, or you only have the English dub?

Because, if the dub is not as good as you wanted, or you prefer the original voices, it's as easy as setting Japanese language and English subs.

(Maybe this question is too stupid?)

Speaking generally, it's safe to assume that any respectable anime distributor in North America would be committing market suicide if it didn't include a Japanese voice track, assuming one exists. (Er -- is it pretty much the same worldwide?)

[ I think the only exceptions are for series shown during kids' TV blocks... and I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that the only anime series ADV has released as English-only lately (where Japanese was available) is Monster Rancher -- they only had VHS/DVD distribution rights on that one, as I believe the actual license to the series was granted to the troubled BKN Kids. Even then, I mentioned it quickly to ADV reps at a con, and they're interested in acquiring the license completely after BKN's issues get sorted out. Heh heh -- don't know if there'll still be a market for the series by the time that happens. Anyway, time to leave this tangent...!]

With regards to Azumanga Daioh here in North America, there's no question that ADV will release the DVDs with the Japanese voice track.

It wasn't my fault! Tomo just has horrible haircuts.

With her first style she looked too much like Osaka, and with her new haircut she looks too much like Kagura... in a comic were characters are defined by hairstyles that's not a good thing at all.

The fact Tomo had been torturing her just seconds earlier and Kagura appeared out of no where didn't help either.

I liked Tomo's Fujiko styled haircut much more than her new spring feeling one personally.

Yes, it's the same here as well, and also for the same reasons (nobody would buy a DVD without the original language), but for a moment I had doubts by reading your comments, that's all.

Heh heh -- sorry about that. I was just referring to how they would translate or adapt the jokes in the subs and dubs on the DVD -- whether they were going to stick to what was originally there, or if they were going to try to adapt what was in the English version of the manga.
