Sweet news, thanks!

"Within Japan, the AWNET should be able to attract a base of fans in ways that weren't possible with the NeoGeo. In global terms, we should be able to make stable title releases in Asia, Central America, and South America."

Where's North America on that list?!? Or perhaps he meant "stable" as in "not pirated as often" =P

One question - Can someone explain what "AWNET" is? Is it Sammy's online network for arcade titles? I'm clueless! Thanks in advance! =)

thanks for the link.

And so comes an end to an era. A lot of us were looking forward to this day but it just doesn't feel as good as I thought it would. It almost feels like a friend passed away.

This change actually worries me a little. The SNKP honcho in the article kept saying how the AW would let them do new and different things with their existing franchises that they couldn't do on the neo-geo. Well, to me, that almost sounds like he's hinting that 3D is the next step for these franchises.

Of course, I'm getting a little ahead of myself. But hopefully SNKP & 2D don't end when SNKP start using the Atomiswave.

I suppose that he means something like "we can do new things -> make new sprites reharsh them for 10 or so years".

I have a lots of grips; but I have to recognize that SNK does know 'how their fans are split'; the way I see it.

40% -> Fan boys that will play the game no matter how awful it is.
30% -> Old School cavemans that refuse changes.
30% -> Players that can ACTUALLY make up their minds and take logical desitions.

... They will never do anything to hurt 'such select' fan fase; nothing like switching to 100% 3D.

For the record I'm positive that Iggy said this months ago, even though he denies having said that. So maybe I'm nuts or maybe he is just messing with me.

....Both options seem fairly plausible.

I knew there was something awesomely special about the Atomiswave when it was announced. I've been looking around for an old mvs in my podunk town. It will be a good move and games wont be as easily piratable. Im very happy with the graphics capabilities on current mvs offerings. They look perfect to me (like Rotd etc kof2k3 Garou etc.)

What about the Crystal System they made with Apple Systems?(what does that company do?) Did they ever release any games for that? I remember that was like a 32 bit processor....

One other thing, isn't Sega owned by Sammy now?
Thats like the dream team. Sega-Sammy-SNK.They should have a Menage-a-Trois 3way 2005 game.

How similiar are the naomi board and the atomiswave?

Good point. It's not like the had to re use sprites for years because of technological limits. If they wanted to they could have done more new things on the neo. They still can...

I think I remember when Mark of the Wolves was elidged to be the final MVS title, or maybe KoF2002 was, it was eleged that with the game the Neo Geo was going to be "going out with a bang". I wonder if there will be a new final game making new go out with a bang.

Why do everyone thinks it will mean new sprites? I don't see how they can suddenly pull out of their asses 20 or 30 sprites all new and beautifull. What I can see about it is that now they have no more memory limitations, I guess the average number of characters will pass from less than 40 to less than 50, so maybe some old characters will at last be allowed to come back, and miserable characters like Xian Fei, Kasumi or the 2000 team may become at last recurent characters.
But since more characters = more possible bugs, I'm not sure it will be such a nice thing...

Because we can hope they'll work for it!
If a more powerfull board is just used to do the same graphisms with absolutely no changes I don't see the point.
Or at last if they didn't make new sprites they can add a better animation for them.

Unfortunately, even the best boards still continue to refuse to draw sprites alone. It's called the human limitation, I think?
Damn you Sammy !

Frankly, i now think KOF 2004 is going to be just a PS2/DC-like KOF with more animation and characters. High-res backgrounds, slightly touched sprites, the kind of stuff you see in KOF Evo, PS2 2001 and PS2 2002.

I don´t mind, considering i much prefer old SNK sprites over GGXX ones. I now can dream about KOF 2006 (the Dreammatch) being a KOF with all characters ever, including variant versions and outfits, plus Kim-level animation everywhere... with CVS1-level backgrounds... Hmmm...

Everybody else will probably whine, though.

SSAW will probably be all-new, considering he said teh new designs will be different and the fact SS0S is already a rehash.

I wonder how MS6 will be.

I wonder if South America will support the AW now. There are very little AW boards here, and people still prefer to play GG at home, considering the ports are pretty close to the arcade.

I´m afradi the same will happen to the SNKP AW games, which will make them lose a lot of arcade money... South America is their second biggest market, after all...

Anyway, from what i´ve heard, the AW-Net is a internet service through AW boards. Rankings and BS like that.

Seriously, though, I'm sure this is the best choice for them in the long run, although I guarantee you pirates will work hard at the atomiswave now..

Yes, but since this time they don't own the system, they won't think twice before leaving it behind when it will get pirated. It will be Sammy's problem, not their.

I guess I didn't explain myself well. I trust that they'll do tons of new sprites; but they will be equal or even inferior in quality to what we have seen already. I'm very aware that this 'big change' to another board will mean 'no change' at all.

Edit: STOP MESSING WITH MY HEAD.... It hurts
