"Nobuhiro Watsuki sensei & videogames" , posted Wed 28 Jan 23:43:post reply

I came across these interesting files at Seriwa's RK translation site which has lots of goodies.

Link here: http://victorian.fortunecity.com/stanford/130 /

These are quotes from the Rurouni Kenshin manga's freetalk sections that Serizawa translated. All credits go to him and Watsuki sensei. Sorry for quoting only certain parts of the rant- I fear that quoting everything will be way too long. (not that this isn't)

I've been meaning to create this thread for months- sorry about making you wait if you've been waiting for it. XD I tried to quote the parts where he talks about videogames. Sorry about the length- I hope you enjoy.

BTW, PLEASE read this thread with your browser in full screen mode cuz the lines get horribly messy otherwise. Domo.

------------------------------------------

[chapter 21]
I'm a bit late in saying this, but I've been playing "Samurai Spirits" and thanks to it, I've
even bought the Neo Geo CD. Looking at me this way, you could even think I'm a gameaholic, but
I'm not. I went to a game center only five times during my entire life. All the blame on my
assistants. And I'm terribly weak, even in the Easy Mode I lose so easily and Haohmaru is
dying time after time. To make matters worse, I can play only for one or two hours per week
given my volume of work, so I can't get any better.
I haven't got the "Shin Samurai Spirits" at this point, but I guess at the time you read this,
Kibagami Genjuroh will be dead for the n-th time. (I'm pretty sorry for the people who are not
into games and therefore can't understand a word of what I've written.)

[chapter 29]
A thing I've realized is that lately I see some letters defending only one side, be it the
Shogunate side (Sabaku) or the Loyalist side (Kinnou), like, "I also love the Shinsengumi! To
hell with the Ishin Shishi!" or "I can't believe there are people who are fond of a bunch
like Shinsengumi! They're nothing but a buncha dogs of the Shogunate!". In my opinion, to put
it bluntly, I think that's a pity. The Bakumatsu and the Meiji Ishin are interesting because
there were hundreds of people living and abiding by hundreds of different principles, and not
because of a fight to prove which philosophy or party was the right one. For example, my
favorite man of those times is Hijikata Toshizo from the Shinsengumi (Shogunate side), but
the second one is Okubo Toshimichi from the Satsuma fief (Loyalist side). If you got interested
in Bakumatsu due to "Ruroken", then I hope you enjoy it under a broader point of view. The
Bakumatsu and the Meiji Ishin could only be what they were because of both Shogunate and
Loyalist sides... so let's meet again in the next volume!

[chapter 40]
Hi, it's Watsuki, it's been a long time. Well, it's all of a sudden all right, but
below goes the character popularity poll made among my five assistants (I didn't take part
in it):

1st place: Takani Megumi 26 points
2nd place: Shinomori Aoshi 16 points
3rd place: Nagaoka Mikio 10 points
Myoujin Yahiko 10 points
Sanjou Tsubame 10 points
Sagara Souzou 10 points
7th place: Udou Jin-eh 09 points
8th place: Sagara Sanosuke 08 points
9th place: Beshimi 07 points
10th place: Isurugi Raijuuta 05 points
Zanza 05 points
12th place: Kamiya Kaoru 04 points
(a.s.o.)

This is very funny, since it's very different from the poll in the Shonen Jump.
Megumi looks like everybody's beloved, everybody voted on her. Aoshi got the second place
given the anxiety about his future and Nagaoka has got everyone's support. The Zanza and
Sanosuke difference was a thing the staff adhered to. FYI, Kenshin didn't get a single vote.
Hey, hey, what's wrong with you?

[Chapter 57]
And at last, a light-hearted talk about games. I've finally bought the Playstation.
And I've bought also the Sega Saturn (thanks to N-san and his fellows. Please come and
play them with us). But I've barely touched them. They're now game machines only for my
assistants...
I have no time (oh no, where has light-heartedness gone?)! But I've got to play
Vampire Hunter and Virtua Fighter 2! And I'll master the Shin Samurai Spirits (legends tell
I haven't mastered it yet). I'll play them trying to avoid any problems in the "Ruroken".
So let's meet again in the next volume.

[chapter 65]
Still the talk about the anime. It's obvious to the people involved either in animes or
in mangas, but I am not much involved in making the anime (my schedule doesn't afford such
tasks). Not only that, the difference of media between the anime and the manga makes it
impossible to make them equal. But the manga is interesting in a certain way and the anime is
also, although in a other way. So if they are both interesting, wouldn't it be OK, after all?
As there's not much point in babbling about it, I TRUST THE PRIDE AND SOUL OF THE PROFESSIONALS
and I eagerly await the anime. (it looks like a bit confusing, but to put things in a nutshell,
I agree with animating Ruroken)
And at last, a bit of talk about games. Namely, the "Samurai Spirits Zankurou Musouken".
I haven't played it yet, but that "Hisame Sekimaru" is... If the people from SNK based
themselves on Ruroken, not because of a offensive point of view or a malicious one, but rather
because of good intentions and/or a professional point of view, I'd be very happy. I felt a
bit relieved, since I was in a blue mood reading a very nasty and foul letter concerning Misao.
I wonder what would the sender of such letter think when he saw Hisame... I laughed a bit when
I thought about that. Nasty me. So let's meet again in the next volume.

[chapter 76]
Hi, it's Watsuki, it's been a long time. Already three months have passed since the
beginning of the anime. What do you think about it? I'm greatly relieved, since it's a way
better than I had feared. I'm especially happy, since they showed their souls and pride as
professionals, maybe because I complained harshly and a lot about the quality of the drawing
in the early stages of the anime. Yes, there are indeed much to improve, like some problems
in acting, the excessive condensing of the story ( I can't get over the compressing of the
Jin-eh story in only two stories yet) and other flaws that make me blush in shame, but I've
been talking to the director and I hope we'll gradually solve those problems. I await for
your support.

[chapter 82]
Well, as the talk became too much apologetic, let's begin with game talks.
I've bought and played the "Samurai Spirits Zankurou Musouken". Honestly, I thought
the game was "cool, but not entertaining". I liked much the overall ambience of the game, more
dense and Japanese-like, and the new characters like Kubikiri Hajagumi(???), but the balance
of the game is nowhere to be seen...
The problems are the huge difference of strength among the characters and the exceedingly
long and cruel combos, but above all it's the difficulty to beat the CPU... I guess it's a bit
too harsh to be exterminated even in the level one against the weakest character, just because
you lowered your guard for just a moment. It really looks like they are telling people that the
game is NOT for casual players like me or for beginners. It's a pity, since I like Samurai
Spirits very much. Anyway, now I await for the Samurai Spirits RPG and the fourth Samurai
Spirits.
Now I'm into "Vampire Hunter". It's so great, so fun! And it's awesome that even
beginners can have lots of fun with the arcade! I thought that such games were the ones that
deserved to be released in videogames. And my fave character is Morrigan (laughs). Up to now,
I haven't almost used female characters at all and I didn't like those sexy dynamite women, but
I don't know why she became my fave. I like especially the face she makes when she is hit while
she's down. I wondered whether it was time to move on to the 3D games, but it looks like I'll
linger a little bit more in the 2D world.

[chapter 91]

And at last, the game talk, as usual. And the main is the fighting genre. I've been
playing "Vampire Hunter" and "Samurai Spirits Zankurou Musouken", as I wrote in the previous
volume. I started playing with Gown in "Vampire" also. It makes me feel good seeing the
multiple hits of the Beast Cannon, but still Morrigan rocks for me. And about the Samurai
Spirits, I'm using only Shura Genjuuroh. I've just finished it in Level 1 and now I'm trying
the Level 2. At the beginning, it was hard to get the grip of it, but once you learn to use
the "Reijin" ("Zero Blade"), you have your enemy almost down. So indeed the balance is strange
(obviously, I have to take into account my puny gaming skills, but...) And that's why I'm
aiming to master the 3-hit and 5-hit combos.
It looks like I have plenty of time to play although I say otherwise, but to tell the
truth, I'm lucky if I have 2 or 3 hours a week to play. It's not unusual a week without gaming,
something that has become quite common nowadays, so as a result I haven't played "Tekken 2" yet.
As the tips and tricks for the 3D games are completely different from the 2D ones, I'll take some
time until I can enjoy 3D games, and therefore I end into playing "Vampire Hunter" and "Samurai
Spirits". Anyway, my assistants played Tekken 2 and showed me all the endings (but this is
really the dark path, isn't it? But I cried with the King and the Armor King. These two are
cool!)

[chapter 95]

Hi, it's Watsuki, it's been a long time. As I have only this space this time, I'll
condense all the stupid talks.

- "Samurai Spirits Zankurou Musouken": learned some tricks from a friend of mine about Rasetsu
Genjuuroh. The flying weapons and the three leaps in the air are so fun! No matter what they
say, I love Samurai Spirits and I can't stop playing it. Phew...

- I've read "Silver Surfer". I've never payed much attention to it, but man the story is so
deep! Proud! You're proud, Surfer! And so lonely... I've recommended it to my assistants. If
you have the chance, give it a try.

Hi, it's Watsuki, it's been a long time. There are some rumours out there that predict
the end of Ruroken with the end of the Kyoto Arc, but that's not true. I'll keep on while I
have the support of readers. So let's go to the stupid talks.

- About the 4th Samurai Spirits, the "Tenkaku Kourin". I have played only four times by the
time I wrote this, but this time it's very good! The gamemakers took into account the beginners
and the casual players also, and the skill of the COM (computer) has decreased, so you can have
lotsa fun. The playing system has gotten more sophisticated, and that is a bit confusing, but
that's also fun. From now on, I guess I'll plunge into the Samurai Spirits for a while. (just
to let you know, this time I'll get Rasetsu Genjuuroh). And about games of the fighting genre,
it's finally out, the polygon Kenshin game. I haven't played this one yet, but it looks like
good. There seems to be several hidden elements, so those who can afford it, please give it a
try.

- These days I'm hooked on "night sights", especially now, when we are in winter, near the end
of the year. A TV channel of Tokyo broadcasts night sights from various places when they
show the weather forecasting (that is late at night), and I simply can't get bored. To tell
the truth, I'd like to spend all night watching it, but unfortunately I have no time for that.
Nevertheless, I intend to, one day, rent a room in a high hotel (in terms of height, not price)
and fulfill my dream. The hotel can be at Shinjuku or Ginza (note from Serizawa: those are
two famous districts of Tokyo) or some other fancy places. Why have I became fond of night
sights, you may ask. The reason is not only their beauty, but also because I feel the ambience
of living, a life that, even though I do not feel that attached to it, isn't yet despicable to
giving it up (can you understand this feeling?) If you can, please look at least once to a
night sight. I believe you will feel something of your own.
So, let's meet again in the next volume.

- About the games, talk a bit about the finally released for domestic entertainment, the
long awaited "Vampire Saviour". At the point I write this, I realise I've played just for few
times, but I feel sorry for Morrigan, who's got weaker. But, as usual, I'm completely hooked
and even if I am utterly destroyed in the combat, it'll be okay if it's Morrigan. And Galon is
cool too. About the new characters, I am intrigued with Lorrigan/Lilith (not that I'm intrigued
with the character itself, but with its relationship with Morrigan, so let's not misunderstand).
So, as you see, I've been using quite a lot of characters, so I'll let those new characters
away for a while. After the initial enthusiasm, I intend to test all the new characters. But
the games I've got hooked feature either samurai or robots or monsters, and NO common people...
I'm a bit depressed.

- At last the "Poligon Samurai Spirits" is being slowly unveiled. I don't like that there
will be fewer characters, but the number of ninja characters (Hanzou, Galford, Sougetsu, Kagetsu)
has finally surpassed the number of samurai characters ! (Haohmaru, Ukyo, Genjuroh. Hanma and
Shiki are out, because Hanma uses no swords and Shiki is too strange for a samurai) Nevertheless,
I expect a lot from the game. Oh, but I do expect a lot for 2D versions also...

- The "Gekka no Kenshi" ("Last Blade"), from SNK, that appeared out of nowhere. I've
heard that the scenario was Bakumatsu and so I dreamed about the Bakumatsu version of "Samurai
Spirits" (I'm telling you seriously. Haohmaru's descendant was a Shinsengumi member, Genjuroh's
was a Hitokiri, Nakoruru was Nakoruru (strange as it may seem). I was SO disappointed when I
woke up before playing the game. But I have high hopes. I hope that both the "Gekka no Kenshi"
and the "Samurai Spirits" will improve as a natural consequence.

ACTION DOLL.

Well, well, well, I've finally bought it, the female dolls. I had promised never to
lay my hands on them, but there were Nakoruru and Rimururu. Not only that, they have articulated
joints! I, Watsuki Nobuhiro, have got to GET them! (like a Pokemon phrase). If they release
the 2-player Nakorimu, then it would be just perfect!
But action dolls... oh, my! Are they the "winds of change" that I talked about in the previous
volume? (that would be disgusting...)

- Hi, it's Watsuki, it's been a long time. As the winter came, I, as a man who loves cold
weather, finally started to work diligently. But all of a sudden the year was over... As usual,
time flies like an arrow...
About the last chapter of Kyoto Arc, "In The Blue Sky". This title is the title of a BGM from
the game "Virtual On", Temujin stage. It was meant to be the blue sky of the last scene, but
not only that, this BGM (to be more accurate, it's the Arrange version of this BGM) fits just
perfectly in the image I had for the Kyoto arc, and I listened to that song a lot, especially
when I was drawing, listening with my headphones, the fight Kenshin vs Shishio. So, the climax
had to be related to that. And about the last page, I think many people realized it: I took
it from the last scene of the first opening of the Ruroken Anime, "Sobakasu". Since the
beginning, I thought that the best end would be the "I'm home", but I couldn't picture a nice
image, so I saw the scene and said, "That's it".

- From now on, here comes the stupid talks. Starting with game talks, "Polygon Samurai Spirits".
I'm writing this without knowing when this game will be available. It's painful to wait, but I
have to bear it if a enjoyable game is to come out... And the "Gekka no Kenshi" ("Last Blade")
is finally being unfolded...No, rather than talking, let's play it! Just to make it clear, I
intend to play with Washizuka Keiichirou (laughs). As I wrote in the previous volume, let's do
our best and hope that they bring a exciting game...

COVER FLAP:

Watsuki: Well, no matter what they say, a manga artist has quite a lot of freedom....

Megumi: You say that, but inside you're thinking "now if only there were no time limits to
deliver my work...." (don't you realize that a manga artist without time limits is an
unemployed manga artist?)

- Second, the game talks. I finally played "Last Blade'. But as I'm very busy, I don't have
enough time to master it. Anyway, I intend to play with Washizuka, who's got strength, and with
Moriya, who's got skills. As I didn't play it much, all I can say is "it looks like enjoyable",
but the technique "Saishuu - Rouga" ("the Last - Fang of the Wolf") from Washizuka is really
cool, so it's a must for the Shinsengumi fans. And it was just once, but I've finally played
the location test version from the another game from SNK, "Samurai Spirits". The playability is
quite different from the 2D version, so I think it'll take time to get used, but it really looks
like fun.
The world of games is the hottest genre nowadays, so it deserves a lot of attention from now on.
Go, manga! Go, anime! (I'm talking like it was someone else's busines...)

- About the games, as lately I've been busy, I haven't played them. Nevertheless, I've finally
seen the Washizuka ending in "Last Blade", from SNK. I was a bit surprised because the ending is
exactly as I had imagined. I've bought the Neo Geo CD version also, so in the long run I intend
to see the endings of all the characters. On the other hand, as the local video game center
hasn't brought the "Samurai Spirits", from SNK, I haven't played it yet... so I'm expecting it
to become available in video games instead...and another game I found interesting recently is
the "Shiritsu Justice Gakuen", from Capcom. One of my assistants is crazy about this game and he
says something about finishing the game with all the characters. As I was waiting to play the
"Last Blade", I decided to try it and although I couldn't get the grip, I quite enjoyed it.
I've got to move out, and such and such, so time will be precious and I won't have time to play
it. Thus, I await for its release on video game.

COVER FLAP:

Watsuki (happily singing and chiming his bycicle bell): Silver Wheel! Silver Wheel! Mach! Mach!

Enishi: So that's the reason why the manga is getting so delayed...

Watsuki: No, YOU are the reason.

ITS NAME: SILVER WHEEL NUMBER THREE

Now that the pain in my butt is gone (see previous volume), I'm back to cycling, woo-hoo! When
I'm not drawing, I spend every day 20 ~ 30 minutes riding my bike. It's far from an ideal
exercise, but indeed it makes me feel better. Some days ago, I was in a good mood and rode my
bike to break the speed of sound, but I tripped and I bled my knee with the fall.
Am I a child or what?

About the games, I've played a bit the Sega game,
the Virtual On Oratorio Tangram. It's kinda fun, but there's such a variety of weapons, making
me confused. I'll play it when they release it in the video game (I think I'm only talking that
nowadays...). I want to play not only fighting games, but also RPG, simulation games and
adventures, but that's impossible while this series go on.

- About the games, I play the Virtual On Oratorio Tangram once in a week, before the work. As
usual, I'm very bad and have lost every battle so far, but nevertheless I'm enjoying it. Now
I use mainly Afamed the Battler and Temjin, and Grys Bock and Scyther now and then. My goal is
to master the Surfin' Ram move.
In other news, obviously the newly released second polygon Samurai Spirits, the "Samurai Spirits,
Ashra Zanmaden". I didn't expect a Samurai Spirits release in summer, but this time I expect that
the local game center will bring the game. A relevant point is the more visible difference
between Shura and Rasetsu. Now I'm awaiting. (I digress, but is the 2-D Samurai Spirits really
over? If that's true, it's really a pity...)

But now I hear rumors about the release of the "Samurai Spirits 2
Ashra Zanmaden (SNK)", so I'm thinking again about going back to game centers. I hope this
time they bring it to the local game center... about the videogame releases, I've played with
my assistants, for about an hour, the "Private Justice School"(PlayStation version) from
Capcom. As usual, I have no time. But I felt a bit attracted by Akira's face. Maybe I had felt
in love if 2-D. The faces in 3-D, when looked closely, are still nasty.

Finally I'm surfing the Net once in a while. All I do is see the homepages of friends and
acquaintances and search the Web about the things I'm interested, but I see that this is
quite cool and useful. I've got to take care with situations like the above mentioned one.
If I get enough time, I'll try those subscription things and e-commerce, but before that
I've got to master this keyboard.
But what's this "Esc" key? And this "Alt"?

- About the games, the local game center didn't get the "Samurai Spirits: Ashra Zanmaden", from
SNK. The second one they didn't get! I want to play Samurai Spirits! Please, I mean, I want to!
The game "Gekka no Kenshi ~ Tsuki ni Saku Hana, Chiriyuku Hana" ("Last Blade 2"), also from SNK,
made it to the center so I'm playing now and then. The sword attribute "Strength" that allows
a sudden reaction is good, as usual. But there are now too many handsome characters. About the
arcade, I'm playing also the "Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken" ("The Bizarre Adventures of Jojo"), from
Capcom. The acting is quite funny and if you're a fan of the original series, the entertainment
is for sure. The continue scene made me laugh hard. Good! About the videogames, there are some
games I'm interested in, but as I don't have time as usual, looks like I have to postpone them.
And so Final Fantasy VIII (Squaresoft) was released and I haven't even played FF VII... feeling
a bit depressed.

But about the Gashapon I told you about in the previous volume, I'm really into it. From
Bandai's HG (High Grade) Series, the Gundam Gouf and B-3 Gouf, the True Getter Robot (I'm
awaiting anxiously in the Series 2 the Old Getter from the OVA version). From U-jin SR
(Super Real) Series, the Samurai Spirits (Nanase Aoi sensei version!), the good and old Robot
Museum (Machine Blaster and Atranger!). I've even started thinking, "Perhaps there's somebody
who is reading my mind and lining up for those goods". Good!

- About the games, I haven't played much of them, since I'm a bit far from arcades. I've bought
the Dreamcast, and played Capcom's "Power Stone" a bit, but all I can do is to lose to my
assistants, who fight like they were taking their revenge after all I've been doing to them.
But I've got two titles I'm interested in, and I'm in doubt whether I should buy them or not.
Probably when this tankobon is out, I'll have them bought, so I'll tell about that in the next
volume. Just to let you know, one of them is Gal Games! Are you finally giving in to the dark
side, Watsuki?? Are you finally going to cross the point of no return, Nobuhiro?? Is there
salvation to a man who is nearly breaking up as he reaches the age of thirty??? Answers in the
next volume.

But to brighten up my mood, the Gashapon has been rising quickly in this land of the Rising
Sun, and it has become a fever. I'm collecting madly Gundam, SD Gundam (Bandai), To Heart,
Samurai Spirits (U-Jin). For me, who collected whole boxes of erasers of Ultraman monsters,
it's been a pleasure just to turn the handle of the Gashapon. Back then, one turn costed 20
yens, and now it costs 200 yens (ten times!) but this is easily covered with the financial
backup an adult has. But, nevertheless, an adult of 1.80m, with unshaven beard, sitting in a
corner having fun with such things is one of the most despicable scenes one can get, so I'm
playing either soon after the opening of the stores or just before the closing of the stores.

- About the second subject, the game talks, I'll be talking about the two titles I told you in
the previous volume. I'm playing them when I can get some free time.
The first one is "Rising Zan" (Wepp system - Playstation). It's a 3D gun action game. The
protagonist is gunman and samurai hero, who gets excited slaying and shooting the stereotypes
of Japanese cultural villains, so this game is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo silly! Too
lovely and silly! It gets me carried off with the well-timed acting and the talking. I can't
go too far in this game before I'm not used to 3D games, but it's so fun, with the exciting
hassle time and all-button-hit combos. I'd like to recommend this game to those people who can
understand the meaning of "sometimes, there's a fatal attraction that is hidden in the word
called silliness."

- I guess there are people who guessed what was the second game, a gal game released in about
the same time of the previous volume. It's the popular "To Heart" (Acquaplus - Playstation).
I'm sorry, I know that there are people in the state-of-the-art knowledge when it comes to
"the world of otakuness" who may say, "what, only now? Watsuki isn't that much, eh?". To tell
the truth, it's really only now. I had heard about the comotion and fame of "To Heart" (Reef -
PC Version) in the world's biggest otaku festival that happens twice a year in a famous place
of this city. However, I thought "well, this one isn't much related to me" because it's a
PC game and a love comedy, therefore a completely different thing from my manga. But as it
hit the Playstation and friends and acquaintances recommended it, I decided, "let's play".
Perhaps it was because it was the first time I'd played a gal game, but this is much fun
(I digress, but I haven't played "Sakura Wars" (Red Company) yet. As Okina had sung, in the
Shonen Jump, a different version of Sakura Wars's opening song, lots of people thought I had
played it. To tell the truth, I've bought and heard its soundtrack because one assistant said
"the music is awesome". I had quite an interest in seeing the Sakura Wars's world, but in the
end I haven't played it.) It scored a critical hit in my nerves! I'm still keeping the promise
(that comes from Samurai Spirits and Eva affairs) not to get too much involved, but, as one
otaku mind that I am, I'm having quite fun. A curiosity: my fave character is the main
heroin, the damsel Kamigishi Akari. With the money that remained from the Gashapon, I've
created one carefully produced original Akari and it's now on the desk (I've created the
original version, assembling the head of the 2nd Akari with the multi torso of the 1st,
joining them with a rubber band to the legs and waist from Kotone or Rio. This series has
quite a high play value and it's fun. I await for a sequel.)
Talking of which, once upon a time Tsubame called Yahiko as Yahiko-"chan", isn't that so...?
Gosh, the critical hit was more critical than I've thought...

To tell the truth, before the series had begun, Kenshin was intended to be in his mid-thirties.
But my supervisor ("Tantou") pointed that "Isn't it a bit strange to have so old a man as the
protagonist of a story in a magazine for young boys?", so I tried to reduce his age as old as
possible, taking care not to twist too much the historical background, and thus Kenshin became
this "almost thirty" person.

And I realized recently that he and I are the same age.

This "almost thirty" is an age where you don't look too old as you are and you aren't as old
as you look. Probably I would get very old if I clinged too much to that idea...

So, let's go for another "challenge" then.

COVER FLAP:

Watsuki (kneeling down): Thank you for kindly reading this work!

RUROUNI KENSHIN.

255 chapters, 28 volumes. This Romance of a Meiji Swordsman, which lasted for 5 years and a
half, reaches its end. To the editors who have always supported me, to the "tantou"
(responsible) who looked after me even before my début, to the tankoubon editors and printers,
who were continuously annoyed by me, to all the assistants who fought with me this insane
amount of work, and to all the readers who's got this volume.

THANK YOU!!

- And about the Jinchuu Arc. I was finally able to reach an end to this. I can't say for sure
whether it was good or not, but I think it was good that I could write this Arc.

To begin with, the Jinchuu Arc had a completely different approach than the
entirely-shonen-approach that I gave in the Kyoto Arc. To be more accurate, the Kyoto Arc had
such approach because the "tantou"(responsible) suggested it. To tell the truth, the original
approach I had envisioned for "Rurouni Kenshin" was the approach I used in the Jinchuu Arc.
But I realized the fun of the Kyoto Arc-type approach, and thus in the Jinchuu Arc my feelings
and thoughts were neatly split in two, showing many petty flaws.

One of the joys of a manga writer is to write a story that he himself finds it interesting to
read, but the definition of interesting changed in the middle of the series, which didn't
reflect such changes with accuracy --- even after five years and a half of my debut, I'm still
imature.

- The "Rurouni Kenshin" is over now. There were ideas about a Hokkaido Arc or a Second Part, but
I thought that it would be better if I stopped this work here and started again from the
beginning, writing this time an interesting work for my readers. And I got the approval of
the editors, so it became like this.

(Watsuki is red with shame)

Watsuki: THAT'S TOOOO EMBARASSING!!!!

I couldn't feel it when I was under the stress of the work, but once back to
sanity, this gal game makes me feel so embarrassed!

Watsuki: If people see me playing this game, maybe I'll commit suicide...

(Watsuki blushes further more)

Watsuki: Now I understand why the assistants and my friends looked so cooly at me..
Was I playing this game to get some relief? Ohmyohmyohmyohmy...

...... nah, forget it.

(Watsuki is playing To Heart)

To Heart girl: Hiroyuki-chan!

I'M SO WORTHLESS A MAN
me too

Watsuki (helplessly playing the game): After all, this is fun.

I thought it was interesting to read about the games that Watsuki sensei mentions: Samurai Spirits, Vampire Savior, Gekka no Kenshi (Last Blade), Virtual On Ontagram, Justice Gakuen, Rising Zan, Sakura Taisen, To Heart and many more. I'm also interested in his thoughts/feelings about Samurai Spirits Zero and its upcoming special. Thanks for reading.

Edit: added the link to Serizawa's site and fixed other stuff

Right on. It's well known that Watsuki took a very big inspiration from SNK games, Samurai Spirits in particular...this was notable both in good character inspirations and in less successful, videogame-like arcs where Kenshin just seemed to fight round after round. Continue? 10 9 8...

Interestingly, that's the word on Gekka No Kishi (or was it Kenshi?), or Last Blade...that SNK game sorta took a reverse and gave Watsuki a nod, hence the Saitou and Shishio-like characters in the game, among others.
