"Help me remember an old martial arts movie" , posted Mon 26 Jan 22:07:post reply

Hey all,

I don't know why I've thought about this, but I'm trying to remember an old martial arts movie that I watched when I was young. Anyway, here are the clues, I hope you guys can help me identify it.

-The movie was probably released sometime between 1985 and 1970. Yeah, thats a broad range, but that's my best guess. I saw it on TV and I can't remember how old I was when I watched it. But I probably saw it between 1988-1990.
-The plot. Gangsters (who practice martial arts) are wrecking havoc in an urban business neighborhood. In the first scene, the evil gangster leader totally beats up the hero. The hero becomes disenchanted, but defeats the leader at the end. Yeah, generic plot.
-The Actors. No one famous (don't think so). The hero may have been Asian and the villain may have been black. Or both may have been dark skinned and Asian. My memory is fuzzy.
-Special Detail. I think the hero had a special power. When ever he concentrated on his martial arts, electricicty would run up and down his arms. He didn't have an elecricity superpower, it must have been his chi or something. The villain may have had a similar specail effect applied to him too.
-Special Detail #2. I think the fight scene at the end happened in the backroom of a mom and pop store. Or in a warehouse. I think somebody bumped into an oil drum full of water. Again, memory is fuzzy. The fight probably took place in the afternoon, on a clear day.

Well, those are all the clues. Remember, my memory is fuzzy, so some of my clues could be mistakes. Anyway, thanks for playing. I'd really like to watch this film again.

Was it a US action movie? Did the black guy constantly say "WHO'S DA MASTER!" during the final battle and shoot yellow special effects out of his arms?

If so, I think I know what it is, but I forget the name. I think it WAS actually called "The Master" though. Kind of a Highlander-type action FX movie but with fists and ATTITUDE. For some reason I liked the movie as a kid, though if I were to watch it today I'd probably pretend that were never true. :P

EDIT:
Okay, I remember now. It was called "The Last Dragon". Here is the official website. Is this what you were thinking of?

Wow, somebody made a homepage for "The Last Dragon".

Oh, and I think Gojira is right about the movie title. Those Glowing Fingers of Power are a memorable ending to a movie that was already a bit crazy to begin with.

Thats my little brothers favorite movie. He bought the dvd. I like it alot too. I used to think it was cheesy but after seeing it about 3 or 4 times a few things really impressed me. Like Ernie Reyes Jr. (Man that kid has some skills!.) And of course Sho-nuff.

Speaking of hard to remember gung fu movies does anyone remember on USA Network they used to play Kung Fu June in june back when i was a little kid in the 80s. I remember this one gung fu movie called 99 steps of Death wherein the sifu of the temple chucked you down 99 stairs outside of his temple after he kicked your ass and if u hit every step on the way down you died while the hero only hit 98 steps and he lived...

THANK YOU GOJIRA! I think this is it-- the last dragon. I didn't completely recognize the movie until I saw a picture of Sho-nuff. And then it all came together.

I must have this movie. Well, at least watch it. I'm not sure if I'd want it in my DVD collection. Ah dang!

Dude, how could you NOT want a Harlem martial arts movie starring Julius Carry (who later went on to play Lord Bowler in The Adventures of Brisco County Jr) as the villain? Who's the baddest? Sho'nuff! Be sure to check out Mr. Carry in the 1979 films Disco Godfather and The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh. Can you tell I think this guy's the shit?
