Post #1000. It took me a while -- about 21 months here -- but it's been an entertaining and informative time on this BBS. Since it seems the custom to make a post comemmorating #1000, I'd thought I'd use it to post a few news notes and personal updates. (Is it still customary? Eh, screw it -- I'm doing it anyway.)
- Planeshift: a completely-free 3D fantasy MMPORG -- it's a hobby project from several programmers and artists. Progress is slow -- there's only one town with its dungeon to explore, and all you can do right now is explore, chat, make guilds, and collect crystals (currency) -- but the team has long-term goals (they list what features they have for an envisioned final product. I tried the existing client back in December, and the graphics, music, and effects are actually pretty nice. It took a long time to load, though, and it required a heavy amount of RAM (recommended system total 512 MB -- so with my 256 MB, the game was often interrupted by long periods of switching between virtual and actual RAM). But the group is on the verge of releasing a major update which introduces an updated engine, monsters, and combat. (It'll also require a new client and a server database wipe -- just so you know, if you want to test it out right now.) As soon as the major update is in, I'll make another thread about it. We'll see if it's worth having a Madman's Cafe guild conquer the town.
- Takara is working on a machine that allows you to guide/create your own dreams. Oh, and Takara's Bowlingual device arrived stateside. There's now a Meowlingual device too.
- Tierra Entertainment has changed its name to AGD Interactive. If you'll remember, it's the group responsible for the VGA update of King's Quest I and the complete fan-type remake of King's Quest II. The reason for the name change: the Anonymous Game Developers want to direct more focus on the games than on themselves, and they feel a name change will accomplish that. Either way, right now they're hard at work on the VGA update to Quest for Glory II, with the release date being "sometime in 2004." Any news/progress updates can be found in the Designer Journals page -- they've been releasing screenshots, and they even just released a sample track of the Training fight with Uhura in the Adventurer's Guild. It's a good sample of the kind of overhaul that's being given to the music. (Loop for best effect.)
- Retrospec -- I don't know if it was that my original posts came at a bad/busy time, or if people were just indifferent to them -- but if you haven't checked out their games, you really ought to. Highway Pursuit is addictively fun -- and the remake of Head Over Heels is excellent (particularly so if you're a fan of isometric adventure puzzlers like Solstice). And try out the other games they have listed there!
- Cool Cool Toon -- dammit, I still find and finish that Maracas Controller Mini-FAQ. And I don't think I actually had that much work left to go on it -- either way, when I finish it, it'll be up on GameFAQs.
- Now for something a little on my end: cosplay & costuming. Funds are currently short, but I'm at least hoping to get started pretty soon on some clothing-type costumes -- at the forefront of my mind is the Thief from Ragnarok Online. (Yeah, I'm not playing for right now, but I still really dig the design.) I won't follow that design 100%, but it'll at least be a base -- and, of course, that costume wouldn't be complete without a bow. I might also try Yun from SF3, since I've been told I might have the face for it -- eh, don't know. As for my next full-body project, I'm still messing around with a couple ideas, and my future budget will ultimately determine what I choose. For right now, though, the next local sci-fi/fantasy con is in less than 3 months, and I'm hoping to get my Treble/Gospel recreation fixed up and complete. I'll even be redoing some parts, as it was a pretty-rushed project.
- And having mentioned Ragnarok Online -- for those still following, iRO is still coming fast with the updates. Gravity just completed all the episode 4 updates for all the iRO servers (Monster Skills, Turtle Island, War of Emperium), and they've mentioned in the freeBBS that they're working now toward implementing Juno on the test server (though no date has been announced yet). Alternate second classes should follow.
- Finally, the hit count for the Madman's Cafe is currently past 9.2 million.
That seems to be it for right now -- so, the only thing left to say is, thanks for all the great times and news! It's been awesome on these boards so far.
