Just to dump in some more crap onto the shitpile that is ANN since it's now a habit of mine when these topics appear...

Yes, the story of Read or Die was terrible since it didn't involve a lame harem plot which goes nowhere.

hey, they rag on the kenshin dub too. its not the best, but it has the guy who voiced spike spiegel as shishio, that gotta count for something (I think at one point voices for spike, faye, and jet are all on present at the same time).

While I wouldn't have given the story such a harsh grade I also felt the story was a bit on the nonsensical side and could have used another thirty minute block to explain a few things and flesh out the characters a bit more. Oh well.

That's what ROD TV episode 13(14?) is for!

Also it's an OAV for a comic, so you're supposed to already be at least familiar with some of the characters already (something the early fansubers obviously weren't...)

I decided to do my own "kurosufaiya" about ANN's Mao review.

---------------------------

Zac is totally offended that a show like Earth Defender Mao-chan exists. For some reason, he is outraged that they included the Japanese dub track. He is filled with "measured, justified, rage."

Story : F

I thought it was pretty good. It had an anti-war message. Zac is obviously a hard right neo-con.

Juan: Blood for oil.

He thinks any story that tries to say that conflicts can be resolved without violence is "asinine."

Juan: Are they all in high school? The reviewers?

Dunno.

Juan: It sounds like it.

I think they are like 45. But possibly still in highschool though at that age. They are just that dumb.

I think it's safe to say the reviewers at ANN were not held as children. Their parents did not love them.

Please don't insult conservatives
EDIT: by comparing them to Zak (even if he is one; I have no idea).

But the Kenshin dub is bad, it is.
Though they stopped making him talk too much like Yoda for no reason after a while, they did.

I think after he fought shishio and started saying "oro" again he went back to yoda speak, that he did.

but if you think about it, there really isn't a good english equivalent to the japanese "de gozaru," that there isn't. this one would say that they felt they had to keep in his awkward speech patterns, they did.

(that was really painful to write)

Not a direct one, but they could have written him to speak more formally and eliquently, almost Shakespearian in style. That would have fit instead of sticking in crap that's not there to begin with, especially when they put it in the subs too. I stopped buying the DVDs because of it.

Atlus had a similar problem since in Persona 2 a character talked with the de gozaru form. When they translated it, although you could tell they were trying something, it really wasn't as obvious as it was supposed to be.

I'm not sure what the solution is.
