I saw a great deal THIS ONE(about $60) and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it. And what it takes to install one if I want to just take out my old CD or DVD player.

Personally I wouldn't trust a DVD burner that cheap... it's the old saying, you get what you pay for. I paid around $200 for my Pioneer burner earlier this year and it hasn't let me down yet.... I was just watching a perfect copy of Lost in Translation last night.

The drive looks very basic to me, it can't do DVD+R which really doesn't matter too much... since DVD-R is more compatible in most DVD players. It's an internal drive so you'd install it like any CD or DVD drive... if you have an open bay you just slide it in, secure a couple screws... hook in a few cables and you're good to go. At that price though... I don't know how compatible the discs it burns would be though.

Thanks. The price is lowered down from 160 through rebates and I was counting a gift card I had.

I don't own a DVD writer yet, but I would just hold out and get one that can burn DVD+R's as well. Personally I am waiting until next year when the new ones come out that can write dual layer discs, 9.5 gigs of space instead of 4.5

Where did you hear about a burner that can do dual layer? That's news to me... but if it is coming it has to be very expensive. As far as I know you can't burn a duel layer disc, commerical dual layer discs are pressed, not burned.

They aren't out yet. Here's a story from December.

to note:
pioneers, or pioneer clones (like I have) have the best burning solutions for most discs. the cheapest discs are pioneer only, for example.

DVD+R is not that exciting. PS2 uses DVD-R, and any DVD burned to a DVD-R will be recognized in the player.

Dual layer is a ways off, affordability wise. I mean - the first run of them isn't even out yet. Get yourself a nice pioneer clone (I have a PINE) that can do solid 4x DVD-Rs and you'll be a happy person. like me!

See my Xbox is the exact opposite, it only reads +R's, so if I ever buy a burner I got to have + (I just use my friend's burner on his PC).

And dual layer's are not far off, their coming out next year. As for the price I do not know what they will be, but some companies are claiming it may be possible to release a driver where current 4X or faster burners can burn the dual layer format. Still I am sure even if that is possible, they may not release the drivers just so they can get you to go out and buy a new burner anyway.

Be carefull though. I would actually just recommend buying from a big online retailer with a good reputation, then from a small retailer with good deals but no reputation.

newegg.com probably has the best deals. I've ordered from them on a few occassions and they've been good.

And I'm not a hater of small retailers, its just that, its easier to trust larger ones.

Mad Dog is a bargain brand; above the store name but below Sony or Pioneer. That said, I've never had technical issues or breakdowns with any of the hardware I've bought.

As far as the DVD+/- issue goes, it shouldn't matter in theory. In theory, both formats have just as much chance of being read (92+%, if I remember right), even if a device only lists it will read from one. The only real issue would lie in the discs themselves, and there really isn't much of a chance of either one dominating the other anytime within worrying time.

Replacing an old drive with your new DVD burner is simple as pie as long as you are comfortable with opening the computer case. Adding it in as an additional drive is a little trickier, but the process is still pretty simple, and most companies give you good instructions with pictures and such.

Well I got the DVD burner. Thanks to all who contributed. I am more interested in the home movies and photo album thing than the copying games thing and I think this burner suits me well.

the LG 4040B model can write DVD-, DVD+ and DVD-RAM...
and it costs something like US$130 here in south america... and I never had any problem with LG hardware... yet :)
And 'm just waiting for the dual layer standard come to public and research if some old (and cheap) dvd burner has some firmware upgrade to burn Dual Layers as various Optical Media Site has been talking about.

Too good to be true T_T...anyway 8x average burners won't cost more than 300€/$ so those dual layer enabled burners won't be too expensive.
