Uh, what's the point of this? Is it so that folks can have an extra hand for... self pleasuring while playing their favorite RPG?

Well, you're not gonig have a 3rd hand...
I would like a version of the one hand controller compatible with the Dual Shock 2, though...

It really doesn't have the much to do with the PS2 than with Hori. I mean, it's possible they could come out with the same style controller for the GC (of course, there isn't much ADV or SLG on it)...

Actually, there was a recent thread on Slashdot Games about disabled players and the various homebrew solutions that they could use to make their favorite games suit their ailment, such as making custom controllers for one-handed players, making a pair of glasses that would correct the geopanel colors in Disgaea for color blind players, etc. This controller could go a long way toward helping disabled players play the sort of games that would otherwise be suited to them, such as puzzle games, RPGs, and strategy games, but have still been unavailable because the controllers are all designed for fully two-handed individuals.

This follows Lik-Sang's announcement of a left-handed PS2 controller, which should also be a big help for gamers that don't fit into the majority. I hope that these companies are able to find a profitable niche making products like these, but they're really more important for gaming than you would assume.

I think ascii released a similar product for SNES/SFC years back, around the time FF III/VI was released. one of my friends bought one, and I always made fun of his coincidential fanboy-esque following of celes and now free hand...
