...of course they seem to have some things wrong...

Link Here

While the author seems to know the series this is spun off of, he tries to make it clear that this game is basing lots of stuff on Pokemon. As far as I know this game uses an incredibly similar system to that of the original SMT where you talk monsters into joining your party, combine them to make them stronger, etc.

Shin Megami Tensei: Released 1992
Pokemon Red/Blue: Released 1996

Clearly this game is trying to garner a little of the same market, but this review just strikes me as one of those stupid "Tactics Ogre sucks 'cuz it rips off Final Fantasy Tactics" arguments.

I'd really like to hear if anyone bought this game. While EGM's review was lame, they seemed to like it. I can't trust IGN's review since most of their complaints (little to do other than catch monsters, low amounts of battle animation, etc) can be attributed to Pokemon Saphire/Ruby which they gave a 9.5 to. It didn't help that Pokemon S/R was the exact same game that's been released 3 times before (4 if you count yellow) with some more monsters and different looking characters.

I think if someone here agreed the game wasn't so great I'd believe him or her. IGN's review just sounded like a "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE POKEMON" type of rant.

IGN liked Tao Feng. They even gave it a good score. Meaning IGN are game reviewers from the bizarro universe, I wouldn't bother listening to them at all.

I don't have it, but I'd suggest hitting gamefaqs for opinions. They usually have intellegent posters for obscure games.

"Objectivity/Subjectivity of reviews" , posted Tue 14 Oct 22:14post reply

Generally, when looking for opinions on games that I might buy I look at www.gamerankings.com first. Generally, given enough reviews you can take a look at a few high ones and a few low ones and get a good idea about what is good and bad about the games. Game reviews are never particularly objective so it generally takes a critical mass of reviews to get a good idea. For the same reason agonizing over the objectivity or "fairness" of a single review is pretty pontless as well. I can think of a number of games that are all time favorites of mine that that got pretty poor reviews initially (gunvalkyrie).

It's fine to adovcate games with poor response for critics, but it's probably better to talk about what's good with the game rather than what's wrong with the review.

You liked Gunvalkyrie!

Okay, you're one of the good ones.

This is kinda a continuation of a post I made earlier bitching about an EGM review which told me nothing about the game. I don't have a lot of cash to devote to videogames right now and don't want to waste money on a bad game. IGN's review is the only mainstream review I've found so far and it is flawed so I don't trust it.

I'd like to know what's good about the game so I can buy it, but there are almost no reviews that are decent which is what this complaint is a continuation of.

Thanks for the link to Gamerankings. It's not doing so great over there either so I'll have to read what people are saying about it.

I haven't played the game, but there seems to be a general consensus among all of the reviews and previews that I've read for it. The game is basically Pokemon, but with nothing special stacked onto it. In other words, it has the same great core gameplay than Pokemon has, as well as some comparable monster designs, but that's it. The complaints about it are less about it "ripping off Pokemon" (which it isn't) and more about the general feeling that if you've played Pokemon, or Monster Rancher, or Digimon, or any of those other monster trainer games, then you've played this game. It recycles the old "catch'em all" core and doesn't add much to differentiate itself from the patch.

If you're a MegaTen fan, then you could probably enjoy it in the same way that you would enjoy a licensed game. Like a licensed game, it doesn't do anything original in terms of gameplay, but the enjoyment of being a fan of the franchise could make up for that.

And don't listen to IGN reviews, even if you're desperate. No good can come from that site.

OK...sure, it isn't fair to say that Devil Children is ripping off the Pokemon system, because it uses a modified old school Megaten system, but really...to say that it isn't an attempt to cash in on Pokemon's success is just silly.
I have no idea if Devil Children is good or not, and rather it's like Pokemon or not (or rather it rips it off) is irrelevant. However...I still find the game sort of "insulting" and I wonder how Cozy Okada feels. It's not like it's SO bad, but I hate to see "Shin Megami Tensei" attached to such a title.
