Since I'm big into public debate, I'm going to make a thread on the 13th of each month designed to start a round of intelligent debate within the good folks at the Cafe. Here's #1.
Before I begin, a story for you all.
In one of my courses, we often do journals commenting on recent reading we've done (or just write some smoke and mirrors). A recent book we read was Bobby Delaughter's Never Too Late. The book is about the prosecution of Medgar Evers's murderer (Medgar Evers was a mid 1900's civil rights worker in my home state) in the early 90's after the murderer had been free for 30 years. (Previously, there were two mistrials, so the murderer could be tried again.)
That's not the main reason I made this thread. We often are asked to do commentary on each other's journals, and so I ended up reading one of my classmate's. She didn't like the book much, which was fine with me. She expressed distaste over "racial tensions" and wanted people to just let them die, which I had problems with, but she was fully entitled to her opinion.
However, she devoted half of the last page to a strange opinion (to me, at least). She took strongest objection to Mr. Delaughter himself, on the grounds that he claimed to be Christian yet used coarse language. She felt so strongly about this, she felt compelled to quote the Bible to defend her condemnation (a verse from Ephesians that escapes me at the moment).
The story you've just read is the subject of my first debate of the month. I encourage you to find out more about the subjects, whether by asking me or researching by yourself. Then, please post your reaction, on whatever part of the story you feel like commenting on. Please don't comment on someone else's reaction for, oh, a week (October 20). Sorry if that's a little restrictive, but I want to prevent any possible flame wars. If you feel very strongly about anything, so much so that you might inflame tempers, e-mail me and I'll hear you out.
Thanks for reading, and have an enlightening time. (God, that sounded nerdy.)
Edit: Just comment on whatever you want to comment on. Anything even remotely related to the story is fine. I wasn't trying to do anything formal with this, so have fun.
If God didn't want no cannibalism then he wouldn'ta made no folks outta meat. Disclaimer: Not actually named Krzyzewski. Also not cannibal.
